    Since the Lloid face has "decoy" in the name, I wonder if the idea is that the player is actually replaced by a gyroid that play session since the "real" player is still visiting another town? Tom Nook just goes "LLOID! YOU'RE UP!" and tosses a second Lloid in front of the player's house with a hat on. "Brilliant... they won't notice a thing."

    That’s a funny idea! I’ve seen so many creepypasta-like stories saying “your villager was lost forever because of you.” Or even “Mr Ressetti had enough and killed your villager.” While interesting theories, those don’t fit the vibe of Animal Crossing at all. I think your idea would make more sense. It’s Lloid (or a version of Lloid) covering for your villager until they get back home.

    I think the Gyroid face is meant to be a joke, which got lost on a non-Japanese audience. In Japan, (from what I've heard) Clay Dolls are commonly associated with magic, bringing them to life to act as servants and such, and when you load up after resetting, the villager becomes confused, since you left, and haven't returned yet. So I think the joke is, that your character left, so you're instead playing as a clay figure, meant to take the place of your character until they come back. This is why the face looks like a gyroids, since they're clayfigures as well. This is also why Coco has a similar face, as she's meant to be a clay doll as well. I could be wrong about this though.

    This is exactly what the intentions are. In Doubutsu no Mori e+, they introduced the ability to "lend" your town out via the official SD Card Adapter. While your town was in this "lent" state, the environmental palette becomes this lifeless gray color and player house furniture is removed. So, yeah. The gyroid face is called 'decoy' in the code because it's your lifeless body that's been left behind while your "soul" travels to another town.

    Oh my god, you just made me remember that a few days after Christmas when the GameCube came out a few of us brought our systems to a friend's house for a sleepover and we figured out that you could take the Animal Crossing game disc out mid-game (someone took it out when the TV was turned off but not the GameCube). So there was three GameCube playing Animal Crossing in different rooms of the house off of one disc and we had a ton of fun discovering the game with each other, me and the other friend ended up getting the game ourselves afterwards and returning back to our town from the memory card save

    15:43 This reminds me of when I did this in Animal Crossing: Wild World. Myself and others used Action Replay to give us these things that we called seeds to place buildings down, reload the area just as you did, and then have a building appear. People used this maliciously when visiting other players. They would place buildings in front of critical locations like Tom Nook's or even their town gate. I would go in and use a code to remove the buildings for people. People were very grateful for it. They would leave the area, come back, and the unwanted building would be gone. Great video by the way as usual. I liked the way you presented things.

    As a heads up, the code is from decompilation, which means fans have analysed the game and recreated the code - so the punishing players is added by the fans, and not necessarily what Nintendo wrote. Though the fact this is deliberate suggests Nintendo really wanted to send a message stronger than Mr. Resetti.

    Resetti capping the text speed to talk slower reminds me of N in Pokemon Black and White, with N always having a 1 stage faster text speed because he talks fast. Pokemon BW even has a hidden faster text speed for the effect when you're on the highest setting. Love it when games have little details like that.

    Something interesting about the NES. Wario's Woods was released in 1994, the last officially licensed title for the system (And the only NES game to have an ESRB rating at launch). This means that there is only an 8 to 9 year gap from its original release to its inclusion in Animal Crossing. If applied to New Horizons, this would mean that you would be able to play games such as Rhythm Heaven Fever or Super Mario 3D World.

    1:30 Another fun fact semi-related to this one: The European version of Animal Crossing has five different copies of the game inside, one for each language. You can even extract them and run them by themselves. I guess Nintendo didn't have to worry about running out of space, so they threw optimization out of the window.

    14:33 There's actually _more_ mappers than the 256 IDs listed there! That picture is from specification of the original iNES header format, which only supported 256 different IDs. But, once you start adding in mappers used in bootlegs, homebrew and the like, you start quickly going above that! Not to mention that a couple slots were accidentally wasted on duplicates or were reserved for emulator or internal use. So there's a newer 2.0 revision of the format, which supports up to 768, though I don't feel like counting to see how many of the slots are actually used so far.

    There’s something about finding secrets about the GC version specifically. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that when we started playing it, it was like 2002, we were 7 years old, and did not go on the internet…so all we knew about the game was what we stumbled upon on our own. We didn’t even meet Farley in the wishing well for the first time until 2017! Had no idea she even existed!

    I think a large part of it is also how obscure this stuff is. Most things these days are found like 5 minutes after release, and the method is rarely that complex or unlikely. They focus on everything being seen by everyone, as though every game is meant to be "completed", even if that's not really the point.

    For the PAL region disc, the game requires the disc in the console or else it'll demand you insert the disc every time you enter or leave a building, like Nook's Cranny, or your house. The game itself compresses to 80MB at the lowest, possibly due to the languages for the region.

    When placing down additional Nook stores, I wonder how the game handles upgrading them. Does the game keep track of each Nook's sales independently? Unless that data is tied to the object itself, I doubt it. Would placing something like a Nook's Cranny cause it to immediately get upgraded the next day if the village already has a higher tier Nook store? Also, while I've never heard this be confirmed nor denied anywhere, I'm convinced that there's some kind of code when determining villager spawns to increase the likelihood of certain features. On my first ever village I had 2 villagers that spawned with the village in the same acre, and whose names combined were that of a celebrity. To think of this as random chance sounds far less likely than there being a list of possible "OnVillageCreation" easter eggs.

The game was originally released in Japan only but was put on Wii Virtual Console in Japan and Europe in 2007, where 3 of the game's puzzles were replaced. One of the ones replaced was of The Scream, which I now know still would've been under copyright in Europe at the time. The game has also been rereleased on New Nintendo 3DS in 2016 and Switch Online in 2020 but it seems like they either forgot or didn't want to make yet another version of the rom just to change one puzzle back.

    I recall a strange glitch I occured a long time ago when I was a kid about the whale. For some reason, while running around my town's acres, the whale seemed to have spawned in one of my town's rivers. I was running at the time and it startled me so I ended up scaring away so I didn't have a chance to try and catch it. I'm very confused as to what on earth could have caused that to happen. As a kid I didn't even know the whale or the island even existed so I thought it was just a glitchy big fish or something.

    So my GameCube’s disc drive is faulty after over twenty years of use, so sometimes during play sessions the game would stop, saying that there was an issue reading the disc. But out of all my games, this NEVER happened with Animal Crossing and i always wondered why, so after learning that the GameCube doesn’t need the disc to run because it fits in the RAM, it all makes so much sense now. I use my Wii to play GameCube games now, but I’ll always love my GameCube as it sits pretty on its shelf. Thank you for the info!

    Another fantastic video! I knew the whale existed but I was so surprised you were able to manipulate the game to actually catch it. Even though it wasn't catchable as an actual whale that was incredible, and the Able Sisters dialogue was so bizarre and unexpected. It was also really cool how that gyroid was able to do all those different functions in the testing world in the Japanese version. Also I could have SWORN I've seen a Resetti gag like the counting clicks one in an English animal crossing game. I am so sure I remember that. It must be used in the English version of another animal crossing game.

    My immediate thoughts regarding warp item experimentation is wondering how it would interact with traveling to and from another town - Would the game warp you to the equivalent coordinate in the currently loaded town, or would it retain the memory of you having been in the other town and send you back there? Would the game simply crash? If it DID allow you to warp between towns, would the result change if you traveled back to your town from another, then removed the second memory card (and maybe replaced it with another one) and then warped with the item? Could be interesting to play around with.

  • @Slash0mega

    @Slash0mega

    i think that loading into a town would reset the warp id, so you probably can't jump back and forth between towns like that. even then, i suspect your entire town is "overwritten" in ram, so a warp to a-1 would always be a-1 of the loaded town.

    A few parts of the gyroid translation seemed to have some slight issues, so in case it might help, a few fixes / remarks: -- This experiment plays the audio of the selected message. -> Experiment for conveying message emotion to sound. (Sounds like a test of the feature of communicating a 'message emotion' to the sound engine) -- Displaying letter (character) data -> Displaying letter data (The "letter" word here is the 'mailed document' kind of letter, not equivalent to 'character') -- Processing cursor; canceling experiment -> Cancellation of cursor processing experiment (Sounds like a test of whether you can 'cancel cursor processing' or not - maybe the 'impossible' message can't be mashed through?) -- At the end of this message, include the 'Press Button to End (%PB%)' prompt Do not include the 'Clear Screen (%CC%)' prompt -> Make sure not to put Button Wait (%PB%) or Screen Clear (%CC%) at the end of a message. (Sounds like a general warning to the script writers, that both of those codes would cause unwanted effects.)

  • @Hunter-R.

    @Hunter-R.

    3 ай бұрын

    Thanks for some input! I went over it again and made the document more accurate! Though, your final suggestion seems incorrect here, since the game does internally include that %PB% command at the end of that message. Thus, it doesn't make much sense for it to say it's not including both. Only the %CC% command is excluded and I'm pretty sure that's what the text is conveying after conferring with a few others.

    Hi, amazing video as always! If possible, I would like to request a topic to be covered in a future video. Maybe just as a smaller trivia section like in this video? The thing in question is that, as a kid, I remember in my first playthrough of AC receiving a special letter from Nintendo in my mail on one of the first days, as a sort of "thank you for buying the game" gift. The letter in question had actually three items, which I have never seen done elsewhere, and I remember one of them was a KK song. I never again received this letter in any other playthrough, and many years later I learned that it was related to using the memory card that came included with the game, but I have never heard in detail how it works, if the contents are randomized, how come it is a one-time present (or maybe I just changed memory cards?), or anything else really regarding this very unique letter. For the longest time I wondered if I just dreamt getting that letter. Oh and just in case it's region specific, I played a PAL copy on release date. If you read my comment, thank you! I found your channel early on and I it's quickly become one of my favorites.

  • @Hunter-R.

    @Hunter-R.

    Thanks for the nice words and comment! You correctly figured out that Nintendo attached some special gifts in the included memory card of the game. I believe in North America the gift included a letter with a grab bag item featuring K.K. Love Song and two NES items. PAL might be the same, but I’m not entirely sure. Unfortunately this letter is one time only, so playing with a used or overwritten memory card will not cause it to appear again. So, when you played the game as a kid you definitely used a brand new and unused memory card!
