Friend rides a 28 year old Arabian in endurance races. Last year they placed well nationally and won division for “best condition.” Pretty impressive for a pair of aging ladies!

@@annettemcnabb3033 - Not sure. I know she provides electrolytes, some kind of warm beet mash and of course plain old hay and grass from the pasture. She also loves on her horses and gentles them more than most. She has two young mares she’s training to take over. One is almost puppyish in that she’ll come to fence and accept pets from almost anyone. Other is a little more skittish, I can scratch her head sometimes but she’s shy of raised hand. Interestingly enough the skittish one has been judged more likely to succeed because “she has bigger nostrils.” As airway size can limit cardio capacity, this is a major consideration. Going to say initial horse selection probably pays a large roll in their success.

I have a friend who actually competed on her Arabian gelding until he was 37. He's now 40, and still being used as a lesson horse for littles. He actually "pouts" when they leave for a show and he doesn't get put on the trailer !

I checked back with rider I wrote of. Her mare is actually only 26 and so far this year ranked #1 nationally.

I've been teased for retiring sound horses too early in the opinion of others, but as an old dude myself, I think I better appreciate the risk to seniors whether they're people, dogs or horses. I worked in a physical profession, (paramedic/firefighter), with a mandatory retirement age because death or permanent disability was too predictable for those attempting to work past mid 50. Simply approaching 50 was reason enough to assign folks to what we jokingly called retirement stations - the less active sub stations with lower call volumes. Retiring firefighters *before* the highest risk of death or disability was the example I used to decide a plan for my horses. Fairly consistently, within my quarter horse herd and at about age 20, I could see the very first subtle changes indicating they were working a little harder to get around. I think it's easier to spot these changes in a herd of mixed ages on mixed terrain. It was clear the oldest two were working harder to travel uphill. The boss gelding and lead mare were no longer the first to the top. They swung their heads more to compensate for joint changes and took slightly lower, shorter steps. While this doesn't indicate a diagnosis of arthritis per se, arthritis is a blanket term for age related joint issues of various etiologies that I can relate to. I'll take the ribbing for retiring horses too early, but too early rather than too late gives me peace of mind. Except for the colt born from my mare, I acquired each as 2 year olds. I think our long histories have caused exceptional attachments as we got old together, and the last risk I wanted to take was to be the reason they acquired a lameness issue. Riding is only part of enjoying horses and I'm happy to look after and share time with my retired pasture ornaments. The benefit to me is having a reason to get up, get dressed and out the door everyday. I think having horses and this routine pays a dividend in terms of health and happiness that I intend to hang onto for as long as possible.

I have a Morgan and he will be 34 this month, maintaining his weight has been the most important thing for us, he was losing weight so we are giving him more of the feed necessary for that. Back teeth are gone, but he still eats. His temperament is a little off, but it might be his age. Thanks for giving your knowledge on this subject.

@@tiernyjasmine8678 we haven't been riding him for a couple of years, my granddaughter rode him for a short ride and he was fine. Some have said keep riding him.

34 years! Wow! I have a 24 years old Morgan/Quarter horse that looks and acts like she is 10. I hope she lives to 34 years too. 😊

Another good reason to consult your vet is that motion is lotion for an older horse (or human!). The right kind of exercise keeps them healthier longer

It really is a key point that for older horses, gentle exercise will keep the muscle that they need to support their joints and spine. People think "Oh the horse has worked its whole life; it deserves to just rest" but that isn't always the best thing. I used to help take care of and ride an old horse (she made it to 33!) and as long as she was safe to ride and not in pain, the vet recommended she still be ridden (gently) for at least 40 mins every day without fail because a) movement helps a lot with with stiffness and b) when old horses are retired completely and just left in a pasture, they can "grow old overnight" since they lose their muscle mass and then their condition rapidly deteriorates. And that is sadly what happened. She was so healthy and energetic and then once we finally had to stop riding her, she went downhill quickly and started to get a swayback and got very stiff and she lost a tonne of weight and started falling or struggling to get up and 'had to be put down around a year later.

5:11 Yes, thank you! So many people see horses as no different from a motorcycle or other sports utensil, and they don't see the living creature. Horse is sick? Can't ride it? Oh well, off to the butchers with you! I'll get a new one!

I remember when they tried to retire one of the horses at the stable because he was 30 and couldn't really work anymore, but they had to find something light for him to do because he was so depressed that he wasn't being ridden anymore! So I think he became a trail buddy for a few riders.

I had to make this decision recently due to my horse being diagnosed with arthritis in his neck and to be honest we have bonded even more since retirement just doing gentle ground work and general handling , just spending quality time with him , hes only just 15 so hope for lots more years of companionship .

I just want to say thank you for your videos! I used to ride and own my own horse as a kid and teenager, be well versed in equine terminology, breeds, riding etc. But I had to give it up due to health issues. Now I’m 32 and started volunteering at a barn a year ago and riding about 6 months ago. 17 years away from horses means I forgot a LOT. But your videos have helped me tremendously! You cover a wide range of topics and you are knowledgeable and a great teacher. My horse knowledge is starting to come back to me AND I’m learning lots of new stuff too. Your channel is great. Thanks for all you do!

Also another reason your horse or pony will refuse jumps is because they can have ulcers so get a vet to check if there refusing and it’s not like them

Every horse reaches retirement age at different times. My mother's horse retired from carrying adults at 36, but she still had me ride her as a kid when she was 42! That paint loved to run and get out there. Our 27 yr old morgan loves to still trail ride, he has a special saddle pad and other work done for his back discomfort but still enjoys going vs. my retired 23 yr old. At 20 my boy started to refuse log jumps on trails, even while galloping he would stop dead like a reining horse before a branch to walk over it. So I stopped trying to jump. By the fall of his 21nd year he stopped running and when asked he would buck (which he has never done in his whole life!). I decided right then he was retired with the occasional stroll. Now we are just trying to maintain his comfort levels with his arthritis in his hindlegs.

The horse I ride is 30 and DOES NOT LIKE TO GO SLOW no he's sassy and tries to bolt and you didn't see his papers you'd never guess he was 30

This all explained much to me!! I ride at a barn, but there are some horses with some of those problems, mostly the older ones, I would think that there maybe is a reason behind it, but not like that. Are those mostly reasons to retire, cause the older horses and ponies are mostly the kindest ❤️‍🩹

Been told by trainer that our horse trips because he’s lazy and not paying attention. I thought he was deliberately doing it because my reaction is so funny. Now thinking it may be because he doesn’t get enough exercise and I’m a rather heavy load. Seems like he trips more with me than with my wife and more after I’ve been riding a while. Maybe I’m just too heavy - solutions being lose weight (optimum but tough) or get my wife to ride more often so he gets more consistent exercise. At 15 a QH shouldn’t have a problem with trail rides.

Pepper is now living the good life on her parent's farm.

Someone gave us a horse (3 y/o gelding) but when he was young he had got scars on hocks and pasterns due to an injury, which they had given him meds that he was allergic to causing deeper scars. As he grew up, the only way they could ride him was giving him drugs causing more trauma. He went to the vet last week. He went to the vet because his condition got worse. Just waiting to see if we need to put him out of pain. I feel deeply sorry for him and for his friends but if it comes to that I’ll put it the lords hands.

You should know your horse it will tell you. Always work with your equine vet. He/shes the horses best friend. Don't ask to much from an older horse. Use common sense. LEARN about the outside/inside of your horse. Read. Ask questions from the vets.

I have a 30 year old appaloosa gelding with a blind eye, and I barrel race him. He loves it so much! Even though he's 30, he still has more energy and eagerness to ride and run than a 16 year old horse that I cared for for about 3 years! His favorite things are running barrels and eating grapes, and I intend to let him do both until he's no longer able. This was a really good video, though, and I think more people should talk about this topic.
