Hi, your videos are very helpful. I have a query: If someone has to choose between a top 10 QS-ranked university with challenging work outside their PhD field and a 100-200 ranked university with work that fits their expertise, which should they go for? How important is the university's ranking for future postdoctoral opportunities?

Hi, thanks. It depends on what you want to do with your postdoc. Do you want to apply the things you learned during your PhD to a new field, or do you want to go deeper in the field you've already worked on. This is something that you need to answer for yourself. Top-ranked universities can offer better career prospects (it's what I chose back then), but it needs to fit with your plan and your abilities.

I am not in a country/ at a university where there are revisions for a PhD, so I am not well situated to give advice on this particular situation, other than to impress upon your committee members that you have a postdoc waiting for you that you might be at risk of losing. Other than that, it seems like you will have to do these revisions, and perhaps you can negotiate what will be the minimal satisfactory revisions in the interest of time. Good luck!

Thanks Prof for this, I would like to ask for those interested in doing a PhD. I am a 3rd semester masters student and I was fortunate to make it to the interview for a PhD postion which I did last week but I was rejected on the ground that my course ends in August this year. So I would like to know if this 5 -6 months still apply to PhD search too? Or when could be the best time?

Thanks for watching and this question. There are similar points to be made for MSc-PhD transition, since in some countries/jobs you will need to have your MSc certificate in hand in order to be considered for a PhD. So, yes, you can definitely be too early either if this is a requirement or if the position (for whatever reason, there are many) needs to be filled very quickly.
