Hi there! I am a professor of ecology at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. In this channel I'm talking about life in academia from graduate student to running a lab and everything in between. Topics include publishing, writing, reviewing, research strategy, rejections and success - and plenty of advice for doctoral students, postdocs, and early career researchers. Covering all the ins and outs of academic life from the perspective of an ecology lab. There are playlists for doctoral students, postdocs, new PIs, and lists covering more general topics.
New videos out every week, so please feel free to subscribe!

i wish to write one. thank you for your motivation
How to make research labs more creative. A shout-out to the MSc-course that I taught, where this is one of the topics that was discussed. Please let me know in the comments if I forgot something that works, and I hope you find this video useful, irrespective of if you are a PI, postdoc, PhD student, student or staff member.
Thank you for the video! I have an interview in 2 days and I'll try to implement your advice as well as I can. One question I have thought about is "do you usually (or have plans to) collaborate with other groups from the institute?" I'm an astrophysicist and multimessenger astronomy/astrophysics is very in vogue now.
Thanks! Good luck with your interview!
If all your competitors also watched this video...then you will have to count on luck.😊
Thanks! :)
As usual, a pleasure to hear your useful advices. I think another area of research where one can be(come) quite creative is in the writing. For example when you're editing your draft to make it more concise and engaging, re-phrasing/re-structuring text. Stephen Heard has wonderful writings about that. Thanks
Yes, you are right!
Thanks! that was really helpful!
Thanks, glad you liked it! :)
Great insight 🎉❤
thanks!
Now I could know at many places (ideas, research design, scientific articles) I have been creative. Thanks, Rilling.
great!
wow thats a little niche, but just what i was looking for
Yeah, very niche. Glad it was what you were looking for! :)
@@mrillig thanks for doing
Thank you professor for sheding light on this issue. I will for sure check your paper. Bravo for the choice of the catchy title. Please keep inspire us (junior scientists) it is really inspiring to have people like you in Academia.
thanks!
We are grateful for all this useful information, Prof. Rillig! Regarding the first contact, I would like to ask you whether we should also attach a research proposal. Thanks in advance!
Thanks. This depends on the nature of the position. I would just include an abstract of your plans, and once contact is established share your proposal.
Thinking about creativity in the research process, most people will perhaps just come up with 'having new ideas for research'. But there is way more....this video explains! Let me know what you think in the comments! :)
Thanks for the nice introduction to the systematic mapping of the literature. Are there any tools/software to help do systematic mapping, e.g., making the tree diagram to link different literature?
Thanks! People just use R to produce the graphics. But there are tools people have used to help in the paper screening, you might want to check out a recent paper by James Orr in Ecology Letters if you are interested. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/ele.14463
@@mrillig Many thanks for this recommendation, Prof. Matthias Rillig
This is very helpful thank you for making these videos. In regards to talking about fit with the institution, what do these slides tend to look like? Are they mainly bullets? And how fleshed out should potential collaborations be?
Thanks. Yes, these can just be bullet points; or if you have a graphical representation of where your research is headed, you can also add this in there (the names of collaborators). I wouldn't put a fleshed out collaborative program in there, but I would think about these if this comes up. Nothing is more lame than putting someone on a slide as a collaborator, and then drawing a blank when that person asks a follow-up. So: make sure this has substance! :)
Thanks for bringing a positive and helpful contribution to KZread academic content. It seems many people who post academic videos on youtube are fueled by anger over bad experiences or try to offer cheat-codes and hacks rather than just provide honest, solid advice for doing good work and succeeding. Highly Recommended!
thank you!
Greetings from Colombia c: wonderful video, I will definitely apply this topic in my research. Thanks!
Great!
Thanks! Really helpful! I got a question, what do you think of if I got 2 rejections from the first journal? First rejection: When 3 reviewers comment back. Second rejection: When I went through and answered each comment, the editor sent a second round of reviewing process (another 1.5 months), but the editor still rejected it currently. In the editor's email, he still welcomes to resubmit, like resubmission of a thoroughly revised manuscript may be considered. I am confusing, is it good for resubmit it again or change to another journal? What are you going to do this?
It's impossible for me to make useful comments on individual cases. At any point, if reviewer comments seem unreasonable, we just go to another journal. If you want to stay with this journal, you can keep submitting there until it is either accepted or rejected for good. It is unusual to encourage resubmission after rejection twice (in my field), but I guess it can happen...good luck with your paper.
Thanks for this wonderful video on a critical topic.
thanks!!
Hi, your videos are very helpful. I have a query: If someone has to choose between a top 10 QS-ranked university with challenging work outside their PhD field and a 100-200 ranked university with work that fits their expertise, which should they go for? How important is the university's ranking for future postdoctoral opportunities?
Hi, thanks. It depends on what you want to do with your postdoc. Do you want to apply the things you learned during your PhD to a new field, or do you want to go deeper in the field you've already worked on. This is something that you need to answer for yourself. Top-ranked universities can offer better career prospects (it's what I chose back then), but it needs to fit with your plan and your abilities.
Really informative sir. I am applying for postdoc positions in agricultural economics, behavioral economics in Germany. I have a query on funding.. Either I get monthly funding or how sir?? Blocked funding is necessary for postdocs??? kindly clarify me this in this regard.
Thanks. Fellowships and employment contracts are usually paid out on a monthly basis.
I did publish an indexed article in springer , and I keep receiving e-mails about publishing the article as a book chapter ... should I consider this offer ? Thank you in advance for your response.
No, not really. Just a way to make money that is meaningless academically (at least in my field).
I missed the integrative literature review, which is a valuable option
How's that different from a narrative review?
Wondering if this video was there 6 months ago, life would have been so easy. Thanks!
Better late than never! :)
Synthesizing the ever-growing academic literature is an important skill in academia and science in general. Most will know about narrative reviews and meta-analysis; but perhaps systematic mapping is a less well-known option. In this video, I explain the difference among these three approaches, how a systematic mapping is done, and what you can do with the results. Have you heard of this? Have you tried this out? Please let me know in the comments! 😀
What to do if phd guide is moody and wants perfect results in the initial 4-5 months of phd. ( PS- student is new to the lab and techniques)
Sorry I can't give solid advice on individual cases. But it sounds like this should be discussed; and unreasonable expectations are not conducive to a healthy lab environment.
Thank you for spreading positivity!
thanks!
You give great advice in all your videos! I have a post-doc interview next week😄
Thanks! and good luck with your interview!
@@mrillig thank you!
This video collects some of my thoughts and experiences on the topic of friendship and collaboration. Please let me know what you think. What aspects could I cover in future videos on this topic?
Very insightful
Thank you!!
Thank you for sharing your experience!!
Thanks; hope you found it useful.

Do we write opinion paper on an already published article and can we do critique in it like we do in a letter to exitor?? Please reply i will be really thankful
Normally there is a different paper type reserved for this, like a commentary. But we've also written opinion-type papers that refer to a published article, especially if we can put a positive spin on it (with constructive criticism).
There is some problem with your video. I can show it if you want?
Works fine for me.
Do you think I should get back to the reviewer ? Why they are using insults in the reviews ?
No, in my opinion it's not worth it. Just stay matter-of-fact in your responses or move on.
Your circle of science friends is so important. It's worth investing the time to maintain such links in the long-term. Here are some general thoughts on this topic that I hope you find interesting.
Thank you again for sharing your experience through this video. I am going to enter the postdoc phase, and I would really appreciate any tips on how to make such collaborations.
Dear Prof. Rillig, I have greatly benefited from your videos, but many of your friends and students in China do not have the opportunity to see them. With your permission, I would like to upload your videos to Bilibili, the Chinese version of KZread. I think this could help maintain connections with your audience in China.
We will need to talk about this. I think it might be a good option.
@@mrillig Thank you, I will send you an email.
Love this channel! Thank you so much for everything! ✨🌷 This felt like getting advice from someone who really cares. Thanks again.
Thanks so much!!
Very positive tips! Thank you very much.
Thanks!!
Ive been desk rejected 5x times. Im too sad😢
I feel your pain. Don't give up.
Thank you for this great video.
Thanks! glad you liked it!
My postdoctoral interview was rather short. I asked and his response: ‘I only fund foreign postdocs. If you want to join the lab do some research and put together a two to three page proposal for an individual postdoctoral grant along with you CV and a short summary of your thesis research’. A week later my hear my advisor given a reference over the phone and 10 minutes later about setting up time to start flushing out a grant. I learned a lot about how to think about science and why it is a good idea to have a firm understanding of the concepts of evolutionary biology.
There are many routes to a postdoc...thanks for sharing yours! Proposal writing skills are essential for success in academia, so I can imagine how you learn a lot from how someone performs in this respect.
I have been following your channel for the past three years and I wanted to say that your content is priceless. After three years as postdoc, I have my first interview in a few weeks. I just wanted to express my gratitude for the time and effort you put in your videos to help young career scientists to go through the (sometime frustrating) process of academia! Fun fact, I am currently working on soil microplastics, so thank you for opening this field to us a while ago! We still have a long road ahead
Wonderful, that is great to hear. Thanks for writing! Glad you found the videos helpful, and good luck with your research (and the upcoming interview)!
