Here’s my incompetence alibi in my book: The killer murders a man who is responsible for killing a woman 8 years ago, and everyone doesn’t suspect him as he’s too kind and too weak of committing the murder. But one of the guests (the killer’s childhood friend) puts two and two together and doesn’t tell the police as the killer is not a murderer as a: the victim deserved it and b: he literally tried to kill himself to not live with the guilt!

Yes, being too weak to commit the crime would be a great incompetence alibi!

Love Murdoch Mysteries! I remember that episode too with the fiancé faking his immobility to get closer to his intended victims, that's true commitment to his dedication for revenge, wow. Great video, Jane!

The time shift thing was done in Evil Under The Sun, though the killer was not incompetent . It's one of my favorite Christie novels because of the time trick she used.

Hi, I really enjoy your videos! I'm learning a lot about mystery stories, so thank you for that. I know that it's a common trope to have the murderer pretending to be disabled, but to anyone reading this: please don't perpetuate this trope. It's entrenched in ableism and has real-life negative consequences for disabled people. It reinforces the idea that disabled people are objects of pity who lack agency. It's also the source of disabled people constantly being accused of 'faking it' when their symptoms or need for aids vary from day to day. Not a criticism of your video by any means, just wanted to point this out for people who might be thinking of replicating this trope in their own work.

Great video. I have an unrelated question. I want to include a murder in my story where the victim doesn’t die immediately when the killer attacks them and lives for a certain amount of time, but I’m not sure what cause of death would be best for that situation while being realistic. Do you know of any handy resources that provide information you can use for autopsy details in your story? Usually when I try doing a basic online search for this, I get results for mental health sites. I was wondering if there was any easy way to find information that could help me.

I think it would depend on whether you wanted the victim to be able to give testimony before they expired, in which case perhaps poison or an induced heart attack might work? Or whether you want them to be unconscious, in which case you might have them bludgeoned, or allow their car to be sabotaged, causing an accident. But these are just the ideas that come immediately to mind; there might be other good options. If you’re on Facebook, you might consider joining the Trauma Fiction group. It's a group populated by writers asking questions, and medical professionals providing answers.

When you said how a killer can make it appear they can't do a murder but with a tool they can. In a murder mystery game the victim is shoot from behind and the gunshot made it look like the killer had to be shorter then him. But a person taller then him killed him. The victim fled in panic and his body was lean forward as he ran. So when the killer shot it made it look like the bullet went up through him. This case is from the great ace attorney and all ideas go to them.
