When Should You Use An Ergonomic Footrest At Work, And How To Choose The Right Model?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There are pros and cons to footrests. They can help your sitting posture if the chair is too high... but they will make it more difficult for you to sit deep against the lumbar support. Therefore, you should only use a foot rest if you really need one!
Furthermore, the footrest should not be too far forward otherwise it will make you slouch. This will cause lower back pain and it will increase the risk of disc hernia.
I also show you how to choose the best ergonomic footrest, depending if you need it to be easily adjustable or not. If you are working from home, I will also show you how to make a cheap but great footrest!

    Sorry for the late reply! This one is strong, it's just barely adjustable in height: you kinda tilt it around its frame, so there's only one height where it's really horizontal. And it's therefore not super stable in this position. Honestly, you can also make one with a mere plank and a few wooden blocks to raise it :)

    You mentioned that since a cushion doesn’t imitate the floor it’s better to go with a hard surface. But why are many shoes built with cushion/foam and if you’re wearing shoes regardless you have some foam built in?

  • @OlivierGirard

    @OlivierGirard

    2 жыл бұрын

    Because of the difference between standing and sitting: when you sit, the firmness of the floor helps you get a push at the back of the chair. You don't need anything similar when you stand. On the other hand when you stand, an excessively firm floor can become painful due to your weight. When you sit, there's much less weight under your feet, because part of your weight is born by the seat pan. Makes sense?

    Most good chairs can get a longer gas spring... that's the most elegant way out of this situation. If you add a cushion under your butt, the risk is that it slides and that you end up slouching. Makes sense?

    Hello Olivier. What about office chairs with built-in legs/foot support?

  • @OlivierGirard

    @OlivierGirard

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi dear! There are 2 problems about them: - often, you need to unscrew / screw a bottom ring or plate and adjust it. This is an awkard process during which you need to go up and down from the chair: nobody will do it accurately - if the footrest is some kind of a ring, you'll rest your tows on it, meaning that your feet are under your buttocks. The outcome will be a hollow back. Hence (and that's a discussion I have every week, with my industrial clients), the best is to sit with your feet on the ground if you can. If you have a serious reason to sit too high, then get a real footrest :)

  • @OlivierGirard

    @OlivierGirard

    2 жыл бұрын

    OK... let me explain :) There are several things there: - what I mean with "unknown others" is the following: you cannot imagine how easy it is to get professionals' and medias' endorsement for a product. I too get tons of mails offering me benefits for endorsing products (incl. recently a mail for a product that really looks close to that one, actually...), with always the same approach: it won't cost you anything (not even time), and we'll give you products, exposure, etc. For example, I am recommended by Forbes: do you really think that a Forbes auditing team came to me to see how I'm doing business?? - "endorsed by" does not mean anything (it's like "clinically tested" or "validated by..." on your tooth paste). There's no scientific protocol behind this, no clear criteria, nothing - even if there would be a scientific protocol... you can see on my CV that I'm a member of the Logitech Ergo Lab Scientific Advisory Board. A recurring topic in the board is: what's the right duration for an experiment to validate a positive or negative effect of something? Most lab studies observe the effects over 15-30 min: that's not even close to a realistic use of a product that sits on your desk - back to biomechanics. Your feet are here to give you a push that's sufficiently strong so that you can use your lumbar support fully. This requires a certain stability of the footrest / floor. Hence, it's better for your feet to rest on the floor than on anything else. If you really need a footrest, then we can compare ErgoFoam vs. others. But my vision is: replace the floor by something that resembles it, i.e. that is big, flat and horizontal - there are two schools of thoughts. One advocates that "the best posture is the next one". In my opinion, they mix up instability and movement, as I explain here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gJirz9FsY5bOqKQ.html. What I think is that movement is necessary, but not sufficient. In other words, you need to get movement from alternating between postures that are adapted to the ongoing activity. In other words, you need activity variation, and through that you'll get posture variation. Most products that are being invented today try to promote some kind of movement whilst keeping you behind your screen: in my opinion, they miss the point. Makes sense?

  • @ALJessica

    @@OlivierGirard thank you for the elaborate answer :) that do make sense. Well I have always loved the “best of” videos, so I’d love to see a “top 5 best ergonomic footrests” or “ergofoam vs others”. But again, thank you for the answer :) But what exactly is your opinion of the ergofoam?

  • @OlivierGirard

    @OlivierGirard

    2 жыл бұрын

    One thing done: here's the video on the top 3 footrests - kzread.info/dash/bejne/eqtnx8mRh5CudZs.html :) Regarding the ergofoam, my point is that it isn't adjustable, and it's rather small so it limits the mobility of your feet. Furthermore (but I would need to test one to assess this precisely), I suspect that the softness of the foam would give you enough push to truly sit back into the chair...
