When Should You Start Being Concerned About Your Twitching Eyelids? | Knock Knock Eye

This week on Knock Knock Eye, Will talks about the 4 year anniversary of Glaucomflecken skits, before getting into the main topic, EyeLids. Will covers the function of eyelids, who claims facial nerves, what goes on when your eyelids twitch, and when it can get more serious with blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm.

ER nurse. Found you by your shorts, and as they got into the darker parts of healthcare it really helped me understand why I was becoming more and more uncomfortable with how hospitals were run, and how much I appreciate the good managers I have. Your health insurance/hospital leadership shorts have really shaped even my political views as I’m entering my 30s and growing into leadership roles at work.

My friend just got a hip replacement and she started talking about how chill and funny her orthopedic surgeon is. She said he was "a total dude" and looked like he "just got out of a rock climbing gym". She had no idea about your channel and knows very little about medicine but it was so funny to see a random real world confirmation of the ortho bro stereotype. I showed her some of your ortho skits and it brought my friend some much needed comedic relief while she was in pain recovering from her surgery.

As a viewer with no medical background, I personally really enjoy the very 'inside baseball' kind of jokes. It gives me a little look into what goes on in that world, and something to research if it catches my interest.

I think it's an amazing and enjoyable experience for an "inside" joke to be told in a way where someone outside can understand simultaneously (a) that's funny (b) I don't know why but I could educate myself. I'm sure I still miss most of the inside jokes in the skits, but I look forward to each and every one.

I love the skits, especially the subtle cues that identify characters. (I still confuse the neurologist and nephrologist unless there's a Morton's container nearby - but that is my issue) The inside jokes are fun - sometimes I get them, sometimes I have to look up a term before I get it, and sometimes they completely fly over my head. I wouldn't change anything.

So here’s an interesting eye twitch anecdote for you. I took a lot of zinc for over a decade, self-prescribed for acne. Worked like a charm but I didn’t realize it will interfere with copper absorption. Cue the onset of an almost daily eye twitch, sometimes for hours. No one could help me and I was told to just ignore it. Then I was told to take copper by a very thorough doctor. As soon as I started taking copper the eye twitch completely disappeared. It returned years larer when I started taking zinc again. It then promptly went away when I also re-started the copper. I am now off zinc and off copper and the eye twitch has not returned for over 5 years. Sometimes there are niche reasons for small and otherwise benign problems. Glad that doctor helped me as I now know copper deficiency can cause all sorts of serious problems.

Yes, more skits please! You do them so well! There's still more to mine out there. I look forward to them. I wonder what it would be like to take the POV of a patient, too. Once in a while I ask someone in my ophthalmologist's office whether they know about your videos. They DO. The best part is asking the assistants and scribes whether they are "Jonathan." Yes, they are. Lightens the mood when I'm in there for cataract surgery or to have a retinal tear repaired. I also have had significant oculoplastic surgery. The scariest thing was seeing my eye opening change because of a small tarsorophy, a repair to ectropion, occlusion of the punctae, and other bits to address dry eye, light sensitivity, exophthalmus, blepharitis, etc. Both eyes. And addressing insufficient lipid film in my tears. ... I appreciate oculoplastic surgery. How about a skit involving oculoplastic surgeons and other niche specialties in all kinds of the wide range of specialties? What's it like in the lab and people who take various kinds of samples? Funny stories about phlebotomy? I have no idea whether there's anything there. Being a PA? Keep it up!

Yay, eyelids! What age (on average) do you usually recommend a blepharoplasty? My own ophthalmologist and his (also ophthalmologist) wife are constantly lovingly arguing with each other over the timing. Lady Dr says to do it as soon as "clinical drooping", as she calls it, becomes apparent. Late 30s or early 40s, because the younger tissue will recover more quickly and possibly scar less. Sir Dr says to wait as long as possible so you hopefully won't ever need revision. Meanwhile, I'm just dreading the inevitable surgery regardless of when 😆

I get eyelid spasms/twitches frequently. Not my whole eyelid, usually just a small spot/corner of my eyelid that will spasm. Sometimes it only happens a couple times during the day, and then I could go days or weeks without it happening, or there r times where it does it almost all day long and lasts for weeks or even a couple months at a time. It is extremely obnoxious. I also get this same exact type of spasms in other areas of my body, for example often on my upper things, or on my arms, and also inside my ears, or on my lips. But if I get it in these other areas it typically only happens a couple times during the day, then could go away and not happen again for a few days, weeks, or months.

Interesting. I didn't know ophtho did botox for this. I thought that was a neurology thing (since I do botox for blepharospasm in my clinic too). And I agree with the other poster. Neurology owns all the nerves! ...for better or for worse.

Have you considered painters tape on the floor for character locations
