Can you do an episode that includes GPC? I just got diagnosed with it yesterday, and it's not easy to find good in depth information on the problem. Also, can you do traveling to tropical locations as a contact lens wearer?

Hi Dr, I'm 23 years old with a myopia of -3.00 and (-1) astigmatism in both eyes. Can I often take off my glasses to read my smartphone or read a book for hours every day without worsening my myopia or astigmatism for the long-term ? 🙏

I remember a few years ago there was a study that got media attention. It was basically putting kids outside more, and the outside kids had lower rates of myopia. I think they concluded that sunlight is what was doing it.

congrats on your show. Here's a question. I have an annoying amount of light sensitivity. When I get and eye exam, I find it nearly impossible to keep my eyes open. I just end up blinking and tearing like crazy. In a general way, what's that about? Can you discuss light sensitivity as a main topic? And have you got any tips for people who feel like their sun glasses are next to oxygen in the hierarchy of needs?

My father has a rare eye condition called Macular telangiectasia (MacTel). For a time we thought he’d fully lose his vision, but he took part in a trial and is actually doing very well. Could you please do an episode about it? I’d love to understand it better.

Question for a future ep: as an ophthalmologist, what do you think of optometrists? (But really - how do you collaborate, differentiate, are there jokes you tell about each other, what should patients know, etc.)

I was one of those myopic kids you speak of. My father had myopia, and I guess I was prone to it, but I was unable to see the chalkboard (Yes. I am that old. ... 60s. Let's say I am in my 60s.) when I was in second grade. The teacher gave us all a simple eye test, and she told my parents that I needed glasses. Fortunately, we lived close to Forest Grove, Oregon, where they had Pacific University. They had an Optometry department at Pacific. They were doing a study on human subjects to treat myopia. One of their treatments was these small, hard contact lenses. My parents signed me up for that. After very carefully evaluating me they determined that I was an excellent candidate for their study. They had me learn to use those hard contact lenses. I was wearing them in the summer of 1965. And guess what?? They worked!! My eyes were already 20-400, but those hard contacts not only corrected my vision but were also able to arrest the myopia. I wore hard contact lenses (non-gas permeable, a solid polymer of some sort) right through my grade school and high school years. What happened to that idea?

Edgar Winter, and his late Brother Johnny Winter, are/were both albino blues musicians. Edgar is still active, it looks like. Edgar's band, the Edgar Winter Group, did a piece called Frankenstein. It's quite good, so I recommend checking it out.

I had -3 or -4 in one eye and +1 in the other eye since I was like 10 or 12. Do we know what causes myopia in just one eye with kids?

I am dying to get Lasik done and have been waiting years for my prescription to stabilize to be eligible, but it continues to decrease by -0.25 to -0.5 every year! Am I just doomed to never be eligible for Lasik? I'm 29 years old and feel like the window of opportunity of it being "worth it" is closing!

Hello, i live in France and my son has had glasses with special defocusing lenses for the last 2 years (Hoya lenses from Japan). He had fast progression of myopia before that, -1 to -3 in about a year, age 11; during Covid so too much time inside i think. His myopia has not changed in the last two years and a recent eye test even was slightly lower. I’m very pleased, obviously! Thought i’d share that glasses are available (here at least) which i prefer to contact lenses. The glasses were expensive but worth it.

Lots of people like to have a little car moment before work. It's part of their routine, like reading the headlines or having a coffee break. You should only worry about it if you are putting off entering work due to anxiety/depression. I used to have panic attacks and then repress them on the ride to my part-time job, so I wouldn't look weird when I got there. Turns out I had undiagnosed autism. The moral of the story is that self-care routines are good and not to be confused with coping strategies. A little me time is good for us and normal. Crying every time you think about going to work is reason to get a therapist and perhaps a new job.
