When Royal Coronations Go Wrong!
'When Royal Coronations Go Wrong!'
Coronations - pomp and pageantry or a vital link with the timeless traditions of taking the throne?
History Hit’s medieval historian Matt Lewis digs deep into the past to investigate the most eventful and chaotic coronations in history and how centuries old aspects of Anglo-Saxon and Medieval coronations will be mirrored in Charles III’s ceremony.
To dig deep into the ancient roots of the coronation ceremony, Matt heads to London's Westminster Abbey and Temple Church, as well as Butser Ancient Farm and Winchester Great Hall, exploring how medieval royal pageantry, some over a thousand years old, still shapes what we will witness in 2023.
With the help of coronations expert Dr George Gross, Matt uncovers the fundamentals of a coronation: the recognition, election, oath, homage and of course the highly symbolic glittering crown! And we also discover that a double coronation, just like Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla, wasn’t so unusual in the medieval world.

I actually clicked on this video thinking that the ongoing coronation is going wrong 😂 Btw., I'm not subscribed to this channel. It was recommended by KZread
(Mis)hearing the roars of acclaim from inside the abbey, the guards outside feared "something was kicking off at the coronation." _So they set all the surrounding buildings on fire._ *What?*
It wasn't given back 1996. English. It was righteously taken back by young Scottish men.
the "earliest coronation in England" was in Dalriada?! come on @historyhit... that's modern day Scotland. Please.
tease!!!
00:44 1600s??? this is embarrassing
Well technically they'd didn't set fire to London
Not fair to ask Americans, however they didn't do too badly !
'When a new King comes into power' Despite all the circus and costume, we all still know the country is ruled. It's never been governed.
This is good, but I can't watch the whole of it since I cannot afford to join you - pity.
You have to dig deep to learn about our toxic past because we didn't get taught about it at school.

The coronation was much more boring than I was expecting.
Please! Let's not have that today (Coronation of the Turd day). I think someone cutting the phallus into the grass was a nice enough touch.
Yet again, twisting history and making one thing be about another.
I think maybe mayyybe it can be argued that the idea of king/queen works to the advantage of a nation when the nation is about the size of a county or smaller and there are several other kings/queen's dispersed throughout the region that will challenge each other if they get grandiose ideas about taking mono (monarchic) power. There was a time this happened everywhere including UK. Still happens in countries with small tribal communities. When a kingdom changes to an empire and then the empire collapses, it's time to wipe the slate clean and start again. How the British monarchy has managed to cling on is through the most false, deceptive, duplicitous, conniving tactics. Everything they do is an act by their own admission. They don't hide it. It's really is a corporation exempt from taxes and benefits paid for by the public and as long as the public choose to buy into the act then they are responsible for its existence. Pretty much every other country in the world has figured it out and gotten rid but the UK is buried deep in denial. clinging to a fairytale. It's not healthy. You can argue that they give to charities etc but so do all corporations. They meet their quota. The only difference is they're not investing their own money they're investing the general publics. Charles isn't our king because he's not really a king. We haven't had one of them in the UK for some time. He's playing a king. If the UK wants to establish a positive national identity it needs to get real, take accountability for harming other nations during the empire, not excuse it because it happened. Other empires have done it before, it's been done here, it happens throughout history, but yes it happened here and it wasn't good. We need to acknowledge and start fresh coming from a place of building itself up not knocking others down to feel good. Otherwise I believe we are heading in the same direction that Germany was last century, and that's a bad thing.
"When a new king comes in to power?". As Britain is coming off the heels of a 70 year long reign by Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II. JFC. And as if Victoria and Elizabeth I and Mary I didn't even exist. How embarrassing.

Until very recently male heirs were given priority. He's talking about monarchs of centuries gone by. The documentary is not playing down the role of our far more recent in comparison queen's. Wake up and stop being ridiculous.

@@danielpatrick3362 Hi. Thanks for your condescending reply. I was quoting one of the people who was interviewed for the presentation, not the presentation itself. That's why I used quotation marks. By definition, a coronation is the ceremony that signifies the official transfer of power from one legitimate monarch to the next, no matter their gender. And on occasion, to crown their consort. I was simply pointing out that patriarchy is still deeply embedded in some people's minds with the immediate use of the word "king" instead of "monarch" when the better part of the 19th, 20th, and early 21st centuries of British history were ruled by legitimate queens. Is that ridiculous to you?

Obviously WTC wasn’t an AS considering he defeated the AS’. As for whether the AS were British or not, that logic kinda suggests that nobody is British, as at some point everyone came from somewhere.
