    I had a friend who was a well-studied philosophy professor in his late 60s when I met him. In one of his classes I took we were studying the historical development of the major Asiatic philosophies (Janism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, etc.) he said-in a lecture about mindfulness and deliberate presence-something to the effect of, “There is always time for mindfulness. Anywhere you meditate on mindfulness is a temple. Every breath you inhale and exhale during that mediation is a prayer. Washing clothes, scrubbing dishes, tending your living space, etc.,” Often, I see the term “work ethic” applied to J-Dilla’s musicianship. And while that’s not an incorrect term, I think maybe it’s an incomplete one. We see the cleaning times, the “neat freak/OCD” times, the socializing times, music listening times, and beat-making times as separate activities. Watching this video describe Dilla’s process though, I can hear my professor’s voice echoing and wonder if it’s only to us-looking in from the outside-that there was any dividing lines in JD’s daily process. When for him, it was all a singular entity; lifelong meditation on making his music.

    Thank you for this thoughtful comment. Maybe you're right. Maybe the things that Dilla did just came naturally and it wasn't so much as a work ethic as a discipline but more like him being motivated to do music because it was his passion. It's really flattering that I kinda remind you of your professor. That's like the ultimate compliment considering my vision for this channel.

    Dilla was a genius, no doubt. A true artist and master of his craft. I wouldn't call him the GOAT but hes definitely in the top 5. DJ Premier, Blockhead, EL-P, DJ Shadow, I could go on and on, those of us that grew up in the era of Dilla were truly blessed. The garbage I hear these days has me backing away from even looking for new hiphop. The last album I bought was R.A. The Rugged Mans "Legends Never Die" and damn its good. So yes there are still masters of the underground, the craft, the wordsmiths and the DJs out there, and i hope that the real hiphop never dies. But the shit kids listen to today.......just stop. You're embarrassing the whole genre.

    Sorry about that. It's an excerpt of my video covering chapter one of his book. There's some footage of Dilla but there's not a whole lot of in studio footage. There's some interviews, I found maybe 10. But most of them are audio only. Believe you me, if there was footage of Dilla and Questlove in the studio, I'd be glad to show it. So the video is a second hand account from Questlove told by the book's author Dan Charnas.

He's been gone for 16yrs. I've brought this to others before , I'll start a podcast , you bring your own beats and any other producer ever born , and put all beats to the ear test with Dilla's works. Lol off-time drumming and odd pocketed drums aren’t a thing cause of J Dilla. Drummers have been doing it for decades.

  • @BackToTheBoomBap

    @BackToTheBoomBap

    2 жыл бұрын

    Drummers have been doing it for decades, but it was not typical for people who programmed drums with machines. Rza was doing some offbeat things rhythmically but it seemed to me as that it was mostly accidental but he liked the way it sounded. Dilla purposely devised ways to subvert the machine's almost perfect timing to make it sound more like drummers. Ironically, even outside of hip-hop, people started to emulate him. So drummers doing it for decades was the whole point. Dilla saw that and implemented that it to his style. So with the drum machine he combined straight time or quantization with swung drumming and invented a completely new sound.
