I was homeschooled. My mom and a bunch of other parents started a homeschool co-op. We often had parents apply to get in and eventually our selection process had to get quite strict. I've been on the other side of this and let me say it's equally funny. We would get parents who came to us expecting the care and resources they got from a standard school with all the customization of homeschooling. They thought they could just pay for it instead of volunteering. Like no ma'am we don't need your money. We need your time. If you can't put the work in then put them back in school!

That is the one of the two most important rings people who TALk about homeschooling forget. 1) This will take time. This will take your involvement. This will take resources. You can't just...not invest the time. 2) You will need to know the material yourself, or know where to get it and how to teach it.

​​@@dianajones4639 I was also homeschooled, though had a less than rosy experience. It was a 'Christian homeschool co-op' where all of the parents were Catholic or Christian, and so was the curriculum. One parent from every family would teach a class, regardless if they had any teaching experience or degrees. We usually would read and do work out of textbooks, all of which had Jesus in them (including Government and Psychology). Come to think of it, Co-op never had any STEM classes. I would go to Co-op a couple days a week then do the rest of my 'schooling' at home with my mother. Because there is no federal regulation for homeschooling, I did not actually do any schooling at home at all; my mother would sit me in front of the same "History of America" DVD every day and call it my History class. My transcripts had grades for classes I never took. I never got past Pre-Algebra. This was all possible because even though states have compulsory education laws, mamy of them do not have checks and balances to make sure you're actually doing it. Nobody held my mother accountable. I was sent into the world not even knowing basic traffic laws or sex education. Homeschool is fantastic for some (ex. neuro-divergent students, child actors, etc), but America desperately needs federal regulation to ensure all children are actually receiving the education they are rightfully owed.

I work very hard to meet all the criteria and make sure my kids are prepared for the world, both educationally and emotionally. There isn't anything that matters more to me. I'm sorry that your mom gave you the bare minimum effort. Please know that I have a lot of friends who also pour their entire being into homeschooling their kids. There are many parents out there getting this right.

Homeschool moms dread this type of mom as well.

I’m curious, what were you worried that the school was teaching? I never saw anything questionable being taught, but I went to school in a pretty well funded school district.

@@nt_partlycloudy21 A couple of responses to that. In terms of what my comment says, relating to the video. Perhaps 4th grade in your district is the year kids learn about whales. And you or your child doesn't want to learn about whale. No worries! Study horses or bees or starfish or whatever you want. You don't have to worry about what the school is teaching. You can pick your curriculum and teach what makes sense to you! In response to why we homeschooled, the details are fuzzy because I started over 20 years ago, but they taught math like English, not like math, and we didn't like that. And my son's teacher miscorrected his grammar - she marked wrong what was right - and didn't acknowledge when I dropped her a note. But the main reason we homeschooled was that it sounded fun and freeing and we knew several other families who were homeschooling.

​@@nt_partlycloudy21 sometimes the issue is how they're teaching, not nec what. In my case, my grades were higher than the general school's in elementary school, which I guess made the school look bad? All I know is the principal wanted to dumb me down, so I was homeschooled in middle school to get me away from him. We ended up in an area with a good high school so I was allowed to return to public school then. However, we had bigger issues with my siblings. My sister was not taught math properly (she needed extra help, she was bad at it), and when she failed math, the school refused to fail her. They did it repeatedly, teaching her that she doesn't have to actually try because she'd get passed anyway. My mum and I tried to fix it, both before and after homeschooling, but her foundations were completely fucked and she was reliant on common core and refused to look at it in an alternative way. And this isn't inherently a knock on common core, the issue with common core is teachers insisting on teaching in only one way, instead of adapting to the needs of the child. They just keep changing that one way, which doesn't fix the problem. My brother suffered from severe bullying issues, and the school whined anytime he defended himself. They weren't even really trying to control student behavior, and even paired my brother up with his primary bully for a project. That was the last straw for my mother. All 3 of these were different public schools btw. Not every school is a problem, but some are. Then of course you have a more modern problem of some schools (not all, of course) teaching sexuality to children too early, or in some cases exceeding the job of teachers, in one form or another (you'd be surprised the number of female teachers having sex with their students, and the fact a lot of them are allowed to continue teaching). There's also the much more dangerous behavior of hiding things about students from their parents, which while I understand the motivation, if you are truly concerned about the child contact CPS, it is not your job to override the parents. You can't keep serious issues a secret from them, and that behavior opens students up to victimization as well.

@@katiee4396 No, they don't. At least, I've never heard of such a thing. And why would there be? They should learn a lot about a lot, but specifically whales? One of the models for homeschooling is "unschooling" in which all the learning is child-led. I never did that, but the concept is that kids WANT to learn and you can direct their learning by catering to their interests. If they like trucks, you can talk about truck production and materials to make trucks and the cost of trucks and the demand for trucks and the history of trucks. I am not thinking right now of how biological reproduction fits in, but a creative person could find it. Home schooling isn't always the right choice, for sure. But for those who want to go that way, there are a great many resources and a great deal of benefit.

I plan week to week as a homeschool mom. But I’d never ask a public school for their curriculum - hence the reason why we homeschool is to stay away from that.

I’m a homeschool teacher and I have never heard of anyone doing this.

Okay I’m sorry, homeschooling would have REALLY HELPED ME as a child. The school system FAILED ME. I was autistic and had ADHD, both undiagnosed, and for YEARS all I heard from my teachers was that I “wasn’t applying myself” while I CONSTANTLY struggled in most classes while also being bullied nonstop. I’m 33 and I STILL have nightmares about not passing high school. The amount of kids with ADHD and ASD (and others) who are constantly overlooked and bullied by even teachers is gross. The second my 8 year old nephew was put into public school, the teachers insisted that he be put on Adderall before they would even attempt to work with him. So cool, let’s put kids on freaking speed so they pay attention better. Like, I get it. Teachers have a lot on their plates, but so these freaking struggling kids who are constantly just “frustrations” to all the adults in their life. My friend’s 11 year old daughter was constantly punished by her teacher in public school for the severe ADHD issues she was having, now that she’s been homeschooled her entire life has changed. Please keep in mind that homeschooling truly works better for A LOT of children. If I had had that option when I was a kid, I probably wouldn’t have been riddled with anxiety and suicidal from the way I was treated by peers and teachers and maybe I could have understood the shit they were trying to teach me. Ugh sorry, I’m sure you’re a great teacher, I’m just tired of people ragging on homeschooling. I’m sorry if you had to deal with an ignorant parent like this, but to lump all homeschooling parents into one category sucks. Sometimes the public school system FAILS neurodivergent children. It’s made for neurotypical children who are able to learn in only the way that the school system allows teachers to teach.

This was exactly my experience! I have adhd and dyslexia, and I actually had a teacher once stand me up in front of my whole class and indignantly say, “water is not spelled with an h!” And let the entire class laugh at me. I was in the 8th grade, and she was convinced I was just a problem child who was lazy. I love to learn, but I hated school.

My son's 3rd teacher called me to tell me the my son needed to be on medication because she thinks he has ADHD. I said no absolutely not! Then she called his dad and told him the same thing. His dad said no too. My kid gets bullied all the time during school. He doesn't have Facebook, no social media or online gaming. Kids on the bus just do what they want and kids at school are very mean to my son. Teachers didn't see that I had sensory processing disorder and I struggled in school and teachers just make you feel dumb. Kids were so mean to me at school. Teachers at my school waiting me on medication too but thankfully my parent said no. It's sad to know what it's like to be bullied and then having to watch your kid go through it. He's ready for homeschooling. He doesn't handle the bullying well. I didn't learn the same way most kids did. I have two kids that are autistic and they are homeschooled. They don't need to go through the pain of what the teachers and kids will put them through.

@@daniellegates1354 you are incorrect 100%. I’m a parent of 2 disabled children, who WAS denied education and kicked out of school in his kindergarten year. They referred my kindergartener to an alternative school because they were unwillingly to handle him. Many parents don’t get such a referral, they are just told they cannot educate their child safely any longer. Are schools legally REQUIRED to proved fair and equal access to education?of course they are. Does nearly ever disability parent in the COUNTRY have to fight tooth and nail to FORCE them to uphold this, often having special needs attorneys present at the IEP ,meetings and even SUING the district? Also of course. And let’s take a second to recognize the pure PRIVILEGE it takes to have the resources and time as a special needs parent none the less to SUE the district, when they are known to lie, remove, and falsify documents to cover themselves. I know SPED teachers who were FIRED for recommending parents contact to state organization for SPED advocacy to assist them in getting the accommodations they are owed because they were told they couldn’t agree to it. How many children have eloped from school because they had to FIGHT for the legally owed aid they NEEDED to survive safely all day? I could go on, but the fact is that our children, these families, they don’t suffer and struggle and fight every day just so their children can make it by safely in school, much less get an education, they don’t post the official letters from the schools essentially expelling their children due to their “inability to safely meet their needs” to ask their legal options, SPED teachers aren’t risking their jobs to help parents find options, so that YOU can come on here and ERASE US. Idc if you think she is lying. Idc if she is lying. Your comment clearly is openly claiming that any such a claim is a “tale” simply because “it’s the law”, as if they don’t do everything they can to skirt around it DAILY. Also legally a public school CAN refuse to educate the child, but they are legally responsible for their education from that point, and then have to put their funding for the child into another school that can accommodate-something you nearly ALWAYS have to hire an attorney and fight to force them to do, It is shameful for you to come on here, and pretend like this is not happening to us,and hasn’t been happening to people like my brother (also a SPED student and disabled” for DECADES, and continues on today in 2023. Ignorance is not an excuse either, because as you said, you are a TEACHER. The problem is coming from INSIDE the house.

They do it’s called taxes and home schooled or not they pay their taxes so teachers get payed weather little Johnny is in their classroom or at home but as well those without kids pay their taxes and some of that goes to pay teachers so teachers might not get payed a-lot but they get payed good or bad they get payed. And the pink haired ones teaching 5yr olds about sex and gender and to keep secrets from their parents 😊and drag queens reading trans stories to them and having them all come on a field trip to a drag bar/club and see performances and participate in the show as well parading around in front of perverts and pedophilic monsters and are ta not being allowed to say anything about it boys in girls bathrooms locker rooms boys compete against girls sorry my list goes on and on So get pink green blue purple haired ones out of schools away from the kids as for school boards fire all of them and interview each one and a very deep background check on each of incoming ones. Homeschooling is *hard* at the best of times. 90% of the resources you can find have a christian influence and cost thousands of dollars. Even the good ones sometimes have christian influences. We used saxon math growing up, but nowadays I refuse to use any math text that isn't from the straight forward series.

I've been teaching for 2 years and I've had 2 families of children on IEPs pull them for homeschooling and expected the general education teachers to be sending them activities and lessons via seesaw. We had to explain that while some services remain even in the homeschool setting for students on IEPs the general education teacher's time is NOT one of those services...so yeah, I can see this happening.

Pulling my kids out of school and homeschooling them was and still is the BEST decision I’ve made for my family. I never asked for any teacher’s input; I didn’t do it to bring the school system to my home.

Reading these comments makes me yet again grateful for my mother. She homeschooled me and was serious about it. She took child development classes, got great materials and went to homeschooling conventions. I wish more people had experience with the parents that put in the hard work!

There isn’t only one right way to homeschool. I unschooled(self directed education) my older kids and when entering public high school for the first time they immediately got straight A’s. They played and played during their whole childhood. Read Peter Gray’s Free to Learn.

That's so good to hear. My experience as a homeschooled kid wasn't exactly the best. It was more like "we're gonna cut your education for the next 9 years and buy you some school books so you can teach yourself and not do anything if you don't study at all" than actual teaching. Everything turned out fine in the end, but there are some things I wish I could've learned when I was little because my education right now is kinda lacking :/

I have been homeschooling my children for 9 years, I am involved in two co-ops and know many homeschooling families... none of which ask the teachers for ANY kind of lesson plans, school books Etc.. I am a full-time teacher at home and part-time registered nurse I wouldn't have it any other way I cherish each and every moment with my children.

I homeschool my youngest due to an autoimmune disorder. I have to present a lesson plan to the homeschool office of the school district. I pay for everything myself and I pay at the end of each school year to have my son tested for each grade. It is my choice to homeschool and it's my responsibility to keep my kid on track.

You mean they ask for something more than the simple list of subjects you plan to teach, that you submit with your NOI every summer before the start of the school year?

@@assaba22 I send list of subjects, books, learning aids and programs I plan to use with for each subject with my NOI. I guess it's more a loose lesson plan. They probably don't need everything I send them. I don't break down the days or even weeks but it's still pretty detailed. No one ever told me it was more or less then they needed so I just went with it.

I also homeschool due to immune system problems. (Instead of autoimmune, I had cancer treatments that wiped my immune system out). It is completely our job to make sure our kids are on track, like you said.

Um, I don’t think this was a dig at homeschool parents. I think it was a joke about this scenario and how some people expect the moon and the stars from teachers, even if it is none of their responsibility.

Exactly!!! As a volunteer with our state wide homeschool organization, we are having to deal with some very misguided parents that we have to walk step by step with. Things like the school doesn’t provide homeschoolers with curriculum. E-learning was NOT homeschooling. Nor was it the exactly what is happening in public schools. We don’t allow hybrids in our states, only parent taught 1-2 day a week co ops. Get a private tutor if you don’t want to tees for your student. I’m on board with this video.

In certain states, like Virginia, they follow Standards of Learning (SOL) which is accessible on the state website under education. IXL covers each standard of learning and other platforms like Epic, Seesaw, Blooket, BrainPop, Google Classroom, and Kids KZread can assist in your homeschool classroom. Further, some states offer a free K12 program that has certified teachers who teach online. I would suggest keeping your kids involved in extracurricular activities like county sports, library, museums, and co-op groups. Happy Teaching 🌻 This video highlights how ignorant parents can be. Following state standards means your children will pass state testing if necessary.

One of the biggest draws to homeschooling is to have a different curriculum. Homeschoolers want to get away from what teachers are teaching.

We decided to homeschool our kids for a variety of non-teacher related issues (more administrative, our kids had serious LD but were smart enough to just fly under the radar for getting help... teachers agreed with our choice...) We NEVER considered doing something like this to their teachers! We worked in concert with our local school, yes, but for art & music class - where our kids attended those classes! Once we filled in the gaps that had been growing because of their LD, and we knew they were ready to return, they went back. Of the 4 we homeschooled, all but one returned to school in their proper grade as if they hadn't missed a beat. The only one that was held back a year was the one going into 2nd grade. The reason? She refused to take the assessment tests to show she was ready for grade 2. 3 weeks into the school year the teacher admitted that she should have been enrolled into the 2nd grade, but now it was too late to do that. 😮‍💨🤦‍♀️ All graduated with honours & high honours. 1 works for the power company, 1 is working on her Masters in Museum, Archives, & Library Sciences, 1 is starting her own business, and the last one is on medical leave from school due to a previously undiagnosed health condition that was aggravated by the work required in her field of study... We're working to get her healed up & into a new field of study for the fall. I always said to the schools & teachers: "I see ourselves working as a team in this way: I'm an expert in my kid(s). By having the kids involved in extracurricular activities, attend a regular class at school, and regularly spend time at the public library that was attached to the school, our kids were learning, were "well socialized", and were under the eyes of people who were required to report if they saw something was amiss. We know that not everyone CAN do this, and not everyone SHOULD do this! But it was nice to have the ability & the support to do this when our kids needed the extra help. Thank you to the teachers that helped us on our kid's learning journeys... And thank YOU to ALL teachers for the love & dedication you share with us for our children!❤️🫂❤️

@@PsychGirlRaven we did... unfortunately, because they were smart enough to keep "good enough" marks, they were always bumped down the list as more students who weren't able to get "good enough" marks came into the school. We ended up going to the private sector for testing, but it was incredibly expensive! In the meantime though, it was exceedingly discouraging for our children to work so hard and not get grades that reflected their true effort.

You’re the only other family I’ve seen that had kids take some classes at the public schools. Kindergarten-12th (minus first cause my mom didn’t know I wanted to go back) I took several classes at the public schools. High school I even took Spanish, history, and health because it was free and I liked public school more 😂

Just pulled my 6th grader out to homeschool for 1st time. Had no clue what I was doing, yet managed to catch him up 2 grade levels in 4 months in Math & English. Spent 1st month just reassuring him he wasn't stupid nor would he be in trouble every 5 minutes for getting things wrong. He actually says he loves Math now! And he finally knows spelling rules (they don't teach spelling in elem. anymore) Thanks sucky CA public schools & their curriculum for forcing me out of my comfort zone but firmly back into the role of motherhood and realizing most any parent can do a better job teaching their kid.

It does take time & effort. But in CA you can homeschool through a charter school and the state gives you $2700 a year for curriculum, supplies AND extras like music, dance, horseback riding lessons, etc. BEST decision I've ever made.

@Jaz Rhea Literally first day of school they have the kids cut the erasers off their pencils "we don't have time to fix spelling mistakes. Just spell it the way it sounds to you" Happened in kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades.Changed schools for 3rd grade-happened there too.

Effective homeschooling d depends entirely on how committed the parents are, and how much time they are willing to invest in it. Some of the students I've gotten after a period of homeschooling have been top tier.. they ask the best questions, really dive into the learning process. And some don't know their alphabet by 3rd grade. It all depends on the effort of the parent

I homeschooled my youngest and the school curriculum was lacking. We created a much more fun curriculum! I definitely didnt go to the teachers for help or questions! In my state if you decide to homeschool: youre on your own! Lol

Tbf that makes sense like the idea is you don’t agree or like the standardised school system. I’ve a feeling if things continue the way they’re going more and more people are gonna opt for home-schooling tbh even I’m thinking of it. I read this book best quote I’ve heard “Don’t send your child to school just because it’s what you do, but make it your choice!” It’s got some impact.

Honestly, this is nutso. Haha we spend about $1,000 for our kids homeschool curriculum and access to graders. And for anyone who’s been thinking about homeschooling: do it. Your kids get more adventure and fun in their lives! My 4 year-old just taught herself to read by watching her older brother learn, and is now running around reading chapter books. We had to bump her from pre-k to k to 1st grade already. My son practices his favorite passions more: chess, soccer, math, and reading. We just love it!

I went through high school in an independent study program. I was switched to the local adult education school, that had a program set up to provide services to eligible students from high schools in the surrounding area. Once a week, I had an appointment to go in, meet with my teacher for an hour, take any tests and turn in homework, and get one-on-one instruction for any areas I needed extra help in. I went from being so stressed I had something like a 1.2 gpa, to graduating with a 3.7. It's another one of those things that isn't available everywhere, and isn't suitable for everyone, but it worked for me and I'm immensely grateful that it was available when I needed it.

I home educated both our sons and they graduated 2 years early …. Graduated college with engineering and COMPUTER IT degrees and are extremely happy social and successful ! $$$$$$ they are incredible leaders and very generous in society . Huge high fives to ALL HOME EDUCATORS !

I did a year of virtual with a 3rd grader, 2 6th graders, and an 8th grader. They are all awesome kids, no behavioral issues, but it still made me appreciate teachers even more. I have always appreciated teachers, even have some in the family, so I know how hard they actually work. I could not even keep 4 good kids focused. Imagine trying with 20+, with some of them constantly being disruptive. Teachers are underpaid, and under appreciated. I fully understand why so many are quitting, with the constant abuse they endure from parents, random people online, and politicians.

Lol as someone who was homeschooled, oh honey. That teacher is right, that's not how homeschooling works. 😂

We had a parent whose favorite phrase was, “Idk, maybe I should just homeschool them…” ok ma’am, maybe you should I’m not your life coach and I’m sure not gonna beg you to stay either

In California in the 80's we homeschooled through the district. You got the books, supplies, parents did things together. There was a teacher available for parents and students if they needed help. It was a great experience.

I worked at a school central office. The amount of times I had to explain to a parent that homeschool means it is all on them was staggering. Or that they could not take their child out the last four weeks of the semester, give them their own grades and then expect the school to award credits when they re enroll their child. Madam your child wasn’t home schooled-they were just truant.

In Georgia, home schooled students can partcipate in activities and classes at their designated public school. My children are home schooled, and are awarded the same credit if they enroll in public school. However, we use an accredited program (like a lot of home schooled students these days). The cirriculum is much more advanced than public school cirriculum. By the time my daughter was 4, she was already reading and doing addition, subtraction, etc. Plus, studies have shown that home schooled students do better all the way around whether it be academically, socially, or in life in general. We take field trips monthly to learn history, science, etc. They're allowed to learn hands on. Also, we do volunteer work which they help with. They love it! There's so many resources for home schoolers now. For one example, we have a home school field day where hundreds of kids gather to play outdoor games and win awards. They can also participate in sports, clubs, etc at our local public school if we wanted to, but we won't be doing that because they already play sports and are apart of clubs. Nextbyear my kindergartner is taking a finance class where she will learn the importance of comparing prices, saving, budgeting, etc and I love that we can teach life skills in the real world while also teaching advanced academia. ❤

Good homeschooling parents don't just give kids stuff to do. It's integrated into their whole day and every trip to the store, or walk through a park, or interesting research done on an idea or skill. School is about teaching real life skills, not just numbers and letters. It can be a fun journey that can include video games...by the age of 8 my son understood how to run a city, including hiring, transportation, housing, etc.--simcity was his favorite☺He's been in the military, two times to Iraq, and a decade in law enforcement...so typical teaching does not really help anyone do anything but follow the leader to the world's biggest unsolvable corporate problems. [not saying anything against your post, just venting about the goodness of homeschooling for the majority that take it seriously ]🙂

Sometimes that's all we know. We went to public school how the heck are we supposed to know what homeschool should look like. Turns out it can look like whatever works best for the family. Sometimes there is a learning curve. 🙋It took me about a year to figure it out. Been at it for over 6 years now. We all love it. I didn't ask the school or teacher for a lesson plan though. That is weird.

This is a farce; as a homeschooling parent for 14 years, this skit doesn’t accurately represent a single homeschool family I’ve ever encountered, let alone heard of, in the giant metropolis in which we have a community (5th largest city in US). Hopefully this KZreadr means it as a joke, because, beyond the possibility of a handful of parents leaving the government school system, it’s certainly not based in any kind of general reality. 😄

As a former public school teacher, I have had similar interactions/demands from certain parents. I understand that the majority of homeschoolers want something quite different from what is on the menu at a traditional school, but there are some who have demanded that I share my plans and even materials because, and I’m literally quoting here: “You’re a public servant, so you’re my servant and will do what I tell you.” Karens be Karens, folks. They do not represent the majority, but they do exist.

As a homeschooling mama that is definitely not how homeschooling works… at least in my home. But y’all it is a learning curve! Sometimes you jump in and learn along the way needing so much grace as you do! Don’t be entitled! Do the work!

I think because of COVID and zoom schooling parents think that if they choose to do homeschooling now that it will be a continuation of what was done during COVID. Nope. I’m afraid it’s all up to you mom and dad. Good luck!

Yeah…that’s definitely not what my mom did. Thank you mom, for the freedom I had as a child to get done with what I could easily do in a couple hours and get on with real life!

I’m homeschooled and it def works for me a whole lot better than public school and the one thing that annoys me when I say I’m homeschooled people think I get to do whatever I want I actually do school every day and if I have to move stuff I can I j need to get it done by Friday and I get all my work done

I decided to do homeschool for just one year after a move to our new town. As a child of teachers, and myself having worked professionally with kids for many years I wanted to give my kid opportunities for personal growth development and where I was was a perfect opportunity. Other than a science program I bought for her to follow, and a math book she progressed thru occasionally-I let her pick her own areas to study and research, checked in on it occasionally and expected reports by certain dates. She flowed seamlessly back into the school program after that year, starting at the new school building at the same time as the locals switched to their new buildings as well for middle school. She had made some local friends already so it was an easy social transition. We are arts people anyway so the year was full as normal.

As a former teacher who homeschools her kids, this had me cracking up.

Same here! 15+ years in the classroom and now at home with my son. I actually DID have one family in all those years that decided to take a three week trip to Europe and requested all the tests and quizzes in a sealed envelope and the pages to be covered. But it was an amiable interaction and the little girl came back knowing more than I expected. Plus she had world travel knowledge too!

I will always regret sending my children to school 😔 I’m so glad those days are over 😔

I’m not against homeschooling if it’s done right and meets National and state standards. Where I don’t always agree with homeschooling is there are some really problematic curricula and there’s not always a social component that allows the child to interact with people their own age. Sometimes if a school allows it a kid can take music, art, and other supplemental classes at the school if they’re homeschooled, but not all schools are like that. Both of my parents worked full time so there was absolutely no way I could have been homeschooled and in some ways I think I would have been too distracted at home where I have toys and other things to distract me bc of my ADHD.

I went to public school as a child and then through 4 years of university and have been a registered nurse for 5 years. Public school is fine. If you want to teach your child either religion or a specific subject not offered in a classroom environment, by all means do it on your own time.

@@devent10n I don't know about all curriculums, theyre all different so its hard to say what exactly. But children are individuals. They have their own interests and they work at their own speeds. They don't use or remember half of whats being taught in school. Education that is tailored to the individual child will always be better than public school.

That’s sounds like something my aunt did with my cousin! She took my cousin out of elementary school because the teacher keep telling my cousin to behave and that she needed to do her work. My aunt was insulted by it and took her out while telling the teacher that she had to send the lesson plan. The teacher never did and my cousin ended up learning out of a 1965 textbook cuz my aunt refused to teach her and had my grandma do it.

My stepdaughter was pulled out of school for all of 3rd & half of 4th grade by her mother to "homeschool" but she never filed any of the required lesson plans, registered it with the state or any school districts, then gave her a single 2nd grade homeschool textbook from Walmart (I think it was english + math) and told her to read it & do the assignments when she was at our place every 2nd weekend. Her group of single mom friends all did the same so they could party all week + sleep in. It's taken us 4.5 years to get her caught up to her correct grade from all of that, and the courts never gave a crap either. I know homeschooling can work well, but there's an alarming # of kids in situations like hers too. I wish the state took better care when tracking where/how students are doing in school (home/public/private/moved elsewhere/sick/etc) so so many kids don't fall through the cracks - in any situation. Kids are our future and need an education that works best for each student!

As someone who has gone through most of his education being homeschooled before I switched and went to highschool… Homeschooling is where you learn how to learn, public/government schools are where they teach you what they want you to learn.

Whether you agree with the curriculum or not, teachers have an essential skill that you probably don’t: teaching. Leading a class of kids takes a lot of patience and creative problem-solving. Props!

I don't know many teachers like that outside of the homeschool setting. Lol That's why most parents that homeschool make the commitment. Sorry but it's more true now than when I was a child and even back then we had mostly incompetent ostriches. Props where props are due. I feel bad for any teacher worth their salt that is still in the public school system because they seem rarely allwoed to actually facilitate real education and love for learning. They end up overworked and stressed to the degree that their skills fail. Most teachers aren't trained properly the basic principles of education (teaching), let alone the specific subject they are teaching. I have a teacher in the family that piggy-backed off of an unrelated degree from eons ago to get their teaching credentials and they are terrible. I greatly appreciate the teachers that have made a difference and that put their heart and soul into it. But it seems truly rare anymore.

@@melrod4877 thank you!! We are all human, and we all know the basics of learning. As parents, we can see our child’s learning style. We had amazing teachers in public school, but homeschooling was the best decision we ever made. My two year old hasn’t ever been in a classroom but still counts to 30, reads small words, knows all of his ABC’s AND the sounds they they make. I wonder where he learned that …

All of the homeschool moms out here are doing a collective eye roll to this short, whether they've seen it or not.

This seems ridiculous, but this literally happened to me. A parent was unhappy with how the district planned to curb her child’s bullying behaviors… after ripping me up one side and down the other in a meeting with the administration, she withdrew her child. The next day, she had the audacity to email me to ask for a 2nd grade scope and sequence as well as my instructional plans and help finding materials. True story. I homeschooled my own kids for a year after leaving the classroom and I found it VERY rewarding. I got to blend my experience from teaching 13 years of public school with all the ways I wished I could completely individualize and ditch our state mandated learning timelines. It was a beautiful year for our family, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I also would NEVER EVER have asked their potential public school teachers to provide our learning targets or plans!!! The whole point of learning at home was to observe them as learners and respond to their needs to grow!!! They re-entered public school the next year with confidence and excitement. Should either of them need a little extra help or a change in learning environment again, I won’t hesitate to give it another go. At the end of the day, my kids are my responsibility. I’m grateful for the team of educators that selflessly pour into them, but I don’t expect them to do MY job too!

Based on state testing they do. The way the public school system is set up sets teachers up to fail no matter how good they are. Class sizes, test scores, limited time, quantity of lessons no matter how many kids need more time to grasp something, and definitely budget. Homeschoolers get one on one time, they get the best pick of curriculum, the class is at their pace and they don't have to wait for politicians to make changes that are needed. There's tons of parents with degrees out there homeschooling their kids. So maybe you shouldn't speak on something you don't know about.

Yes homeschooling can work out sometimes but the problem is lots of parents think they can teach their kids but in practice they are bad at it and the education of the children goes neglected. The other problem is parents choosing curriculum. My parents choose curriculum that was young earth creationist and Christan nationalist propaganda. I'm sorry you had that experience. Unfortunately my private then public school education was disappointing. I saw many of my friends allowed to pass when they were sometimes three grade levels behind, the teachers were too lazy and it looked good for the school to simply say they met expectations. And yes-lazy not overworked. Many of the students in her class had a crush on This teacher because he was "cool" and would simply mark off work and give answers instead of helping the students. He would then sit around and read books not associated with school etc. I was blocked from getting into stimulating classes like chemistry even though the teacher requested that I be allowed into their class because I was naturally capable and that I would really flourish academically. The school said I hadn't completed the redundant classes beneath that. No testing in, no chance if no one to stand up for you at home before it's that late. I got my GED before my class graduated because I had been told senior year that I needed seven periods due to their screw up (I didn't know why I had four periods Junior year when my peers had 6)..plus absences (for medical reasons mostly- that I had thought I made up...) Then in spring of SR. Year they told me I would have to be a super senior to make it up, that seven periods wasn't enough. Even though I passed the exit exam easily, SATs good to go, tested well. The GED was more difficult than the exit exam but still I could've passed it a few years earlier, had I known it was an option. The public school system isn't very valuable anymore unless like you say you need support and don't get it at home. I was always inspired to learn more and better at independently learning than being forced into a ritualistic class setting. For me, success would've come quicker had I been homeschooled. Most teachers also aren't trained in the specific subjects they teach. At my child's preschool they couldn't handle a small class of 8 kids and we're teaching my child the wrong name spelling, her age wrong, etc. It's pathetic. Maybe you got lucky and ended in the right school to get what you needed but in my experience most homeschool parents willing to try are amazing, and facilitate learning much more than most public school teachers. It's harder in some ways, easier in others, but I think it's always worth it if you actually care about your child's education. Indoctrinating your child with your own rhetoric is not education. We are Christian and yet I know how often that title gets twisted...we teach our child about Jesus and the Bible but we teach science and every other subject as well. We examine things from a practical mindset without neglecting creative thinking. But try to implement it appropriately. Mostly our faith is seperate. I think people get a very bad view of what it means to be Christian and a homeschooler.

@@ari3lz3pp your information on public school is from your child's preschool experience? You know that preschool is private and not part of the public school system right? Also, have you ever tried to care for 8 toddlers or preschoolers all day? I'm surprised they spent any time at all teaching your LO how to spell their name as that isn't developmentally appropriate for a preschooler. Children's hands aren't developed enough for handwriting before 4-6 years of age (IE, kindergarten).

You do really have to search for good curriculum. I'm homeschooling our youngest & now one of his older brothers (long story), and it seems like 90% of available curriculums are young earth/nationalist oriented. Makes me want to pull my hair out that this is so prevelant. Legitimate resources do exist, but it takes some digging.

My mom homeschooled us without a teaching degree-but she had dual degrees in microbiology and finance. My brother and sister and I went to Duke and Stanford for cybersecurity and medicine. All of us graduated with a bachelors by the time we were 19 and are in med school or working with companies. 2 of us were college athletes D1 and D2. You don’t need a degree to teach, you need a heart of gold, patience, and some real world experience. And any curriculum BUT common core.

I homeschool and I know a lot of other families that homeschool and NONE of us even think like this. We actually want to stay as far from those teacher plans as possible.

This is so creepy, but as a teacher, I have no doubt this could actually happen (& probably already has)

I homeschool my kids and my kids teachers actually emailed me and were asking me if they could send me stuff. I politely said sure but in my brain I was like “ummm that defeats the purpose of homeschool”. I want nothing from teachers. I can’t even fathom doing this. Second hand embarrassment here

Maybe because the teacher knew you’re completely incompetent 🤷🏼‍♀️. I could tell from just that paragraph. Next time someone offers unsolicited help, take it. You could use all you can get

I just hope that the people who homeschool their children also teach them socialization skills and how to work with others when they get older. Homeschooling is a lot of work and I definitely applaud today’s teachers.

One of the main reasons I took my kids out of public schools was because the socialization was so appalling that it was deeply affecting my oldest child's mental health. We lived in a very wealthy school district, and we are an enlisted military family. Kids wearing Gucci to school and asking our son why he didn't have the latest iPhone, really eroded his self-esteem after a while.

I have homeschooled and I have heard many ppl fuss and talk about homeschooling. Once I say I have and what it took for me to do this, they change their mind...lol... I applaud teachers, it was really hard with my kid, I can't imagine trying to do it with ones that aren't mine.

It's genuinely only in America that homeschooling works like this. I'm homeschooled right now and I've got lessons with all the teachers I had lessons with at school too. And it wasn't a choice to be homeschooled for me, it was a medical necessity. You don't get a choice to just do that where I live. I still have to go by school curriculum.

@@pienkunicorn well it does actually work like this in America depending on the state. Many states give the homeschool parents the school curriculum and even the same school books at parents requests. So it’s completely a choice on if they take the teachers outline and curriculum choices or if they choose their own.

You can do “homebound” education like this in the US, if there is a medical reason. I’ve had a student who was in the hospital for several months, and I still provided and graded her work, and a district employee checked in to help her once a week. But Harvey’s mom being upset a 10th grade teacher announced she was pregnant (in a previous video) and that she doesn’t have *detailed* plans for an entire year… homeschool is all her problem now.

You are doing public school at home due to illness. It is not the same as homeschooling. Most home education is a lesson plan made by the parent based on the individual needs of the child.

Home school seems like BS to me, but that's mainly cause my mom took me out of school and claimed that I was home schooling to everyone. Instead I just missed out on years of fun times and friendship and was locked up in the house every. single. day. and i was not learning a thing. except how to avoid her abuse tactics.!

Thank you for sharing a real experience. I know many others who have similar experiences.

I homeschooled my girls for 4 years and I had never done it before. I spent every summer before planning the year and it wasn't easy for me. Thankfully I had other homeschooling moms that had done it before to help me.

I taught for 39 years (mostly public, but some private) and never considered homeschooling my own children. I am so thankful for the broad array of experiences they had with different teachers. It was a delicious smorgasbord of learning and I will always be grateful to the many personalities who made them the great people they are.

I'm grateful for all my teachers too especially my Title 1 teacher. They helped me overcome many barriers to learning. My parents didn't know how to help me.

"I was just doin---...well, it's not important." Teachers, never apologize to parents for doing your job. Inform them of all the things your job consists of, that they've never considered.

Like summers free to do side-gigs while still getting paid and free benefits? Do you know how many teachers I know who got rich this way? Or the others who vacationed for 2 months across the US every summer? Whiney teachers are simply lazy and have no excuse.

I adored homeschooling my son from seventh grade on. I found so much literature to get me started and when I had adapted to my son's learning style (which means we ditched most the programmed literature), he was so internally motivated to learn. Thankfully our state at the time only had basic credit needs (like 3 yrs English, 3 Math, 2 Social Studies/Government and 2 Science, etc.), and once a year he took the standardized tests and he 'graduated' with all the credits needed as well as a trip to DC as part of the Marshall's program in the Police Explorers Program. Being an easy learner myself, I probably would have committed Hari Kari if I had had to put him in public schools and deal with that mind-numbing political mess...so thankful homeschooling was an option for us.

Never met a homeschooling mom who wanted any opinions from a school teacher. That's WHY we homeschool.

There are online homeschool programs available, anything from live online classes with everything but the laptop to daily lesson plans you print out. Not many are free but you have a million options now.

High maintenance Parent: I’m planning to homeschool my child Teacher: YESSSS! Take the sweet angel 😈 out of my class! 🙌 Parent: I was actually hoping you’d still do all the work for me Teacher: 🫠

"Sure, ma'am. However, we haven't discussed the issue of payment. My rate will be hourly as a consultant. It will be $50 per child x $500 an hour with the added part of every email, phone call, text message, chat, video, letter, etc. no matter how long or short from either your end or mine will be an added $50 fee to that hourly/child number. There will also be other fees depending on attitude, supplies (which I will not be getting you), annoyance fees, and added stress fees. Depending on the severity, they can be over $1000 each. I will call up my lawyer to draft the contract amd I'll see that school admin will take Harvey out of class as soon as possible. Thank you. Now get out of my desk."

Moved my kids to virtual school. Not because of the teachers but because of school administration refusing to deal with violent students. She had one arrested right outside of her class. The kid was back in school the next day. The end was my kid being hit in the head with a chair that was intended for another student and fell short. She was terrified to go back to the point we had two weeks worth of medical work up to find out the issue was anxiety. Her teachers were wonderful. The administrators have zero control, we’re unconcerned, and did nothing.

We have this ridiculous group of crazies in my town called Moms4Liberty. This is them 100% them but they’d probably be trying to set her lesson plans on fire while lecturing the teacher about how this is all her fault and how they “own the school board” 😂😂😂

That's not what Moms4Liberty is about. They request lesson plans from a parents rights and taxpayers standpoint when there's signs of teachers indoctrinating students with inappropriate political activism. Actually listen to their testimonials or interviews sometime about how it was negatively affecting their kids ability to learn and forced them to pull them out and figure out how to homeschool.

@@lauren11756 And how would you correct the truth of what their agenda is? Because it's fine if you disagree with it, but my point was just to challenge your representation of them. I also thought it was a larger movement with individual chapters by county. Also, not gonna lie, kinda hard to believe anyone would bother to go to school board meetings like that so often.

Umm curriculum and lesson plans are two very different things. A lesson plan is what you will be doing at xx time. Curriculum the textbooks and what will be covered in that curriculum. Why can't teachers provide a lesson plan a year in advance? Because teacher's don't know which day a student will be sick, an assembly, weather related closings, or if students will need extra time on a specific lesson.

@@rosierose2717 Wow, your admin sucks! Here in AZ we have a curriculum pacing guide that we need to run by admin to make sure all state grade level standards are going to be met, but other then that admin doesn’t even ask for my lesson plans. I usually plan a week or two in advance and for each month a make about 3 days of sub lesson plans in case I get sick or have to be out unexpectedly.

@@mslettucebfrank Also in AZ, and we do a similar thing. We pace out the standards for the year of when we will teach what standards, mark which sections of our curriculum address those standards, and turn it in before students arrive. We do lessons plans weekly as a grade level during our PLC's, and we keep 3 day emergency sub plans handy just in case. I think the only difference is my admin requires us to submit our grade-level lesson plans in a shared school folder each week.

There are homeschool parents who buy good curriculums and also form groups with other parents. They join in field trips and enrichment activities. When the kids are older certain parents specialize in science, language and technical courses. There are more resources at libraries and museums for home schooling these days. It is a lot of work to do it right.

Most parents who end up wanting to homeschool their kids won’t last a week playing teacher.
