I'm an ADHD mama homeschooling 6 children, two of them have ADHD, one with the hyperactivity factor and one without. In this video I'm sharing 16 of the tips we've found to be helpful over the course of the last 12 years.

SO incredibly grateful I found your channel. My 7 year-old ADHD child has had a horrific experience in public school. He has been labeled and treated as the "class clown" and the "problem child". He is slowly being crushed by the public school system, and he's constantly coming home in tears. We've decided to pull him and start our homeschooling journey. This video is so helpful!

Wow this hits home, we are dealing exactly with this situation, I am all overwhelmed because I know the school year is almost two years to finish nish but we surpassed already the point where we did all things possible to work with this teacher and the school. My son is not anymore the happy kid he used to be so it's time to take a different route

You wrote exactly what was happening in our lives. My poor son since he was in kindergarten up until I pulled him out of public school (5th grade) was always labeled the distraction, class clown, the bad kid and it broke my heart. It took me so long to realize his problem is adhd. You aren’t alone. Homeschooling has been so much better for him mentally. It’s still a struggle for subjects he doesn’t like but it’s worth it so he’s not humiliated and struggling in public school. I pray you find what helps your son and remember you aren’t alone. God bless ❤

This is us to a T. I pulled my son in the second semester in 1st grade. He was coming home everyday in tears, behavorial issues. Nothing I do nor the teacher did changed it. We have started over at the basics becuase he could barely read let alone do math. I swear he isnt retaining any information. Everyday is a fight. Im at my wits end. I dont want to put him back in school because he didnt flourish but at the same time hes barely retaining anything now. Im dont know what else to do.

Im an adhd mama homeschooling 3 adhd boys (and 1 tbd daughter 😂) with one being very severe. Saying each neurodivergent child is like double is so validating. I look at all the academic things i want to accomplish and feel so defeated when we spend so much time just navigating emotions that we can't get to all the academics

Hello Melissa! My biggest suggestion would be to grab a copy of What Your Fifth Grader Needs To Know by Hirsch (I'll link to it below). Let her take some time off and pursue some interests, but do have her read that for a little while each day. In the meantime, you can use the time to research homeschool styles, and even take some quizzes. Don't jump into a curriculum without knowing your goals and homeschool style because each curriculum caters to specific styles and goals. Try not to let yourself feel rushed, you have time, especially if she's reading the book I mentioned. Once you have narrowed down some curriculum choices (I highly suggest using Cathy Duffy Review's to research curriculum choices), let your daughter look through the choices and get her input since she's old enough to know what she might prefer. Best wishes to you! Let me know if there's anything else you think I can help with! Here's the book amzn.to/3EK570B

Hi! I was wondering, don’t feel the need to share if you don’t want too, I have ADHD, and so does my son, we attempted homeschooling during covid, but things were different then, his younger sister wasn’t in school, he wasn’t diagnosed and medicated yet. So it was actually impossible 😂 mostly because of my ability to focus and handle the chaos at that time. I’m thinking about trying again with just my son because his specialized school placement isn’t working out. He’s coming home with worse behaviours among other issues. He’s actually excited to try homeschool again, how did you as a parent with ADHD (assuming it’s as severe as mine) handle the homeschooling successfully? What resources did you use? What helped you? TIA❤

You are a Godsend 💕 I ordered the reading strips. My daughter got so overwhelmed when presented with a novel that had smaller font (and was 300 pages long). She was so overwhelmed. I have been making her use a bookmark to keep track of where she is reading to stay on track, but I bet she would benefit from the strips. I also have her set timers and put time limits on what she is working on, and it works wonders.

I would strongly disagree that it's imperative to public school an ADHD child. I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until I was an adult, and I believe that's because I was homeschooled through high school, so it was never a problem with my education. Between my mom and I, we were able to create an environment in which I thrived: taking a break every 20 minutes, changing studying locations frequently, having me give input on what I would work on for the day or even for the year. I thrived through high school and was on the honor roll in college. My dad and older brother, who both have ADHD, were perfectly miserable in public school and did not do well in high school, not from lack of intelligence, but because of boredom and frustration.

If the child is hyperactive, it would be super helpful to do jumping jacks, handstands, seeing how long they can stand on one leg, etc. I was inattentive and easily discouraged, and I still feel the need to take a break to do something that I'm good at, especially when I'm doing something new and challenging. I was just working on something difficult this morning and felt myself getting overwhelmed so I went in the backyard and played an old game on my phone that I've mastered, and came back when I felt better and finished it easily. ADHD is not something wrong with a kid though. It is just how they learn just like not being ADHD is their way to learn. There's two different types of kids and some are book Learners and some are Hands-On learners. ADHD kids are kids that just learn through hands-on. And medicating them all is insane. You medicate all those kids and we will never have anybody to do our hard labor and our physical jobs that we need done. People are just different and neither is wrong. Also ADHD is not something genetic. This is why the US has the most ADHD kids in the entire world. Would it comes down to is what we feed our children you can still have Hands-On learners but the reason kids are the way they are is because of the chemicals in our Foods and we allow too much dyes and chemicals

Hello Kaitlin, I'd look into Diane Crafts programs. It's hard I know. Homeschooling 1 ADHD kid is truly like homeschooling three extra kids! They take more time and innovative ideas. A checklist can help sometimes though. It's helped mine to be in charge with their own checklist so they can work at their speed through the day. It also helps to find engaging books to keep them interested, and so when you are curriculum shopping you might try letting them help you choose. This made a big difference in our homeschool!

Is this the link you had trouble finding? kzread.info/head/PLF8M-ErcDDXIPBT5tRpjb5F28HLdznhyL As for the label, it's not so bad! It's actually very helpful because it comes with tools and resources that help us succeed! Best wishes to you in the journey, you can do this!

@homesteadhomeschoolfamily- some parents shared that they were not able to get life insurance for their children due to pre-existing ADHD. The label does follow them throughout their life. Cannot enroll in military or are denied certain jobs

Yes, I believe so! Contact Homeschool Legal Defense Association! Also, look up your state laws regarding homeschool. There should be an official state website addressing it. If I can be of any more assistance let me know!
