Yeah because just about anything could happen. Hell, Mike Wallace was leading this race for a while and didn't get eaten immediately. Even the top teams sometimes had weekends where they were just seriously off the pace. And when a top driver started at the back, it actually took some work and time to get to the front. Nowadays when Ky Busch starts at the back he's in the top 10 after 30 laps.

Nascar to me started to go downhill after ,2002. But my dad thinks Nascar died when Nascar introduced the Gen 1 car and removed actual stock cars from you know stock car racing. Chevy, Ford none of that matters anymore. They all the same car with stickers on them that say Ford or Chevy. We haven't followed Nascar in years and my dad hasn't since mid 90s. Anyways I tell him that guess what model car they race in cup now, he guessed Malibu and Taurus not whatever. When I told him mustang and Camaro he couldn't believe it. He yelled about how sports cars had their own division back in the day and how his dad be rolling over in his grave. Said he Grandpa would be saying he played for a ticket at Richmond to see Ford Gran Torino not some pretty boy mustang. This is for the big boys. Then got sad on how the spot is so dead and how anyone can be a fan of this sport today must have never seen Nascar when it was actually fun or hardcorenfans all their life's and they old men now and it's just been a routine to watch races for last 30 years or whatever. But couldn't believe how fast sponsors have ran away from the cars when in the 90s big money was being thrown around to sponsor a car all the time. Businesses wanted to have the Gordon, Earnhardt, Martin, Or whoever in victory lane often and plaster that shit everywhere. Now the businesses don't market the driver cause they know they won't bee a sponsor next year. Seems like Brad Keslowski got lucky and gets that always pretty Miller lite paint scheme that Rusty used to have. Also yeah what happened to cool paint jobs, those ones in the 90s and early 00 were always so good. Now they so safe, sterile and boring nobody stands out. Nascar just sucks. Give it ten years and sport will shut down. Or atleast be too small to bother putting on TV

This race was even crazier for the Chase cutoff because of the 400 point cutoff rule back then. Anyone under 400 points behind the leader in the points after Richmond along with the top 10 would make the Chase and when Jimmie Johnson got caught up in the Spencer/Mears wreck that opened the 400 point window for some guys until Gordon snuck in a 3rd place finish to cover the 400 point gap

While the number #19 can win a races time and time again, it does hold a curse for those that were level of successful but were victims to the #19 curse. Such for Mayfield misfortunes after 05’, Edward retirement plus his 2016 final four crash, or in other case Suarez championship in the Xfinity leading into inconsistency in the cup. But I think pairing MTJ with the #19 is kinda balance two misfortunate into a whole and laying a perfect playing field.

With this chase format drivers outside of the top 10 in points within 400 points of the point leader would have made the chase. There was that slim chance of having more than ten cars in the chase.
