When It Rains, It Pours: What the Monsoon Means to India | SLICE | FULL DOCUMENTARY

Every year at the end of the dry season towards the end of May, the hot air above the land rises and draws fresh air from the sea. The prevailing winds change direction and bring with them moisture-laden clouds from the Indian Ocean. This system of seasonal winds is called the monsoon and its arrival is both feared and hoped for…As it approaches, the fervour becomes palpable.
From June to September, the monsoon provides about 75% of annual rainfall in India and remains the main source of fresh water for millions of people. When the storm threatens on the horizon, its arrival gives rise to a ritual questioning: if it’s too heavy, it could wash away houses and their inhabitants and destroy crops ... If it’s too weak, there will be insufficient crops, causing shortages and rising food prices.

    The Indian monsoons have always been a fascination of mine. I had a friend a long time ago in Kerala name Elson, and from this video, I see why he called the monsoons "sexy". I always thought it was strange he used that word to describe a monsoon, but I see the justice of it all, now. Monsoon is the time for love and celebration of the renewed life.

    I was born in the south western state of Kerala in the city of Cochin, my mom is from the city of Alleppey. I spent most of my life in Miami, FL and because of this I never realized the beauty of the Indian monsoon… I now live in Seattle, WA and dearly miss the torrential tropical rains and storms both Florida and southwest India have to offer. I can’t wait to return to Kerala (Quilon) and enjoy a warm cup of Indian cardamom tea, listening to the sounds of rain and thunder, falling asleep in the process. A peace and calm that can’t be done justice through words!

    @35:36: "why Monsoon and love why is Monsoon and love" for the same reason we love rainstorms, snowstorms and wild weather. Take a "time trip" back to the days when we were hunter/gatherers. What did we do during that time when bad weather came. Since we couldn't hunt, fish or farm we socialized with other. And one thing led to another. We discovered each other and love. Those fond memories are a permanent part of our Karma and come to life when we are reborn.

    The answer to the question would entail state secrets. The Indian economy is heavily reliant on this information. This is why the director only answered "yes" and the man prior refused any answer other than saying to ask the director; stating "if I say anything it could cause problems."

    Why not dig many large tunnels thru the mountains to take some of the monsoon waters from the side which experiences flooding to the other side which experiences drought? The sides of the mountains on the rainy side could be terraced to direct the water descending from the mountains to the inlet of such tunnels. And, if the inlets on the rainy side are sufficiently higher than the outlets on the dry side, the force of the water through the sloped tunnels could generate electricity. Such a project, properly done, could ease flooding on the windward side of the mountains and the massive amounts of water stored in a network of giant canals on the leeward side could increase agriculture and aquaculture and ease droughts. Heaven on earth.That should be quick and easy to do using some of the billion+ Indians, don't you think? Cheers and all the very best.🙃😉

    When the monsoon arrives, it stirs up the human activity into a frenzy; it is time to sow and pray to Gods for good crops like we have done over the millennia. The smells, the joy, spring to our steps - monsoon is the emotion of India. You can't describe it, but you can only experience it.

    Very interesting documentary, and many themes emerged. It's nice to see that religion isn't a matter of separation at least in some places, and that the act of killing animals (probably for survival in this situation) can at least bring people together. In other cases, it's sad to see a cobra being killed, although I don't know what choice these people have. And at the very end, the mention of rhynos, it just makes me think how sad it is for animals, to be running not only from nature (which is neutral in itself), but from humans (which aren't neutral at all). I find rain fascinating, but I can't help but notice how inequalities made by humans are worsened by climate conditions. Anyway, nice one!

  • @childoftruth1738

    @childoftruth1738

    Nature neutral? IDTS it's survival of the most fit, eat or be eaten, run or stand and fight. Nature can never be neutral or static no matter how small or large the gain, nature is always moving and Beautiful beyond our comprehension. God Is Real. Jesus lives and loves you

  • @adalbertoruiz7651

    @adalbertoruiz7651

    4 ай бұрын

    @@childoftruth1738 I meant neutral in the sense of intention and purpose. Nature doesn't want anyone killed, it simply is what it is. If in a rainy day a mountain collapses and kill animals and people who were passing by, it's not nature's "fault". Now humans, they really want to kill and destroy things in all kinds of ways, for all kinds of purposes. Like in the video, hunting rhynos.

It might seem like a petty matter but that’s just the kind of generalization that generates stereotypes. 10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. 11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
