I get rid of games every single month. But when? And why? What are the prompts to get rid of one game but leave another? The answers will be different for each person, but here are the things I consider when getting rid of a game or not.

Completely needless comment, but I think this is a hilarious detail: The Vagrantsong box is cut off in the lower left corner of the screen exactly so that it reads rantsong.

Thank you for the video, this is really helpful. I have 113 games in my home with reasonable room for about 80. I also have 20 kickstarter games that will (probably!) arrive some day. I clearly have a problem! Your most helpful tip for me was to get rid of mediocre games. You're spot on by saying we'd never choose to play the so-so game over a fabulous game. I should make this into a plaque and hang on the wall over my game shelf! I also have really cooled on kickstarter because I find I'm almost bored with a game's concept by the time it finally arrives. I'm also new enough to the hobby that my tastes are in flux. I had one auction game I strongly disliked and thought "auction" was the problem. Yet I stumbled onto another auction game that's a top 10 for me. My tips: I keep a spreadsheet of game stats, logging each game. My goal is to play every game 3 times a year, minimum. In January I culled 3 games because I was repeatedly asking the family to table them to meet that goal and all I got was groans! Another "tool" I'm just starting to use is a list of my games grouped by their various mechanisms or themes. I'm using BGG to help make my list. By doing this, I realized I have 20 euro games! While I clearly enjoy euro games, it will need to be a stunning game to have me get another - or perhaps an existing one has to leave first. I also realized I have about a dozen abstract games but I wasn't really loving any of them. For me, I think that means I shouldn't buy any more in that category - ever. I also look at some themes and say, I already have a game with that theme and don't need more (zombies, westerns, vikings, trains). Yet I have 25 outer space themed games. With this theme, I think I'll probably be saying one (or even 2) must go before I add another. Thanks again - this is a much needed conversation that I see most gamers needing. 👍

One way our group tackles " When your desire to play an Unplayed game goes down" is on the one game day we set some rules we always follow. #1 no campaign games (we have another day we just play or continue Legacy or Campaign games) #2 always play an unplayed game #3 we have a hat with all the unplayed games on pieces of paper and we have someone pick randomly. This tends to work out really well right now, and doesn't cause conflict were different people want to play different games. We were having problems were people just wanted to play the same games over and over every week, that no New games were ever getting played. Like I got Vast in 2018, and it was never getting played, but we finally got it played by using this system.

Relevant conversation, useful information, Alex! This is a reality that most boardgamers face: the games start to pile up, but your time and space do not. Decisions have to be made, unfortunately. I'll try to apply these criteria to my own collection! Thank you for sharing and for the video, great as always. :)

Re: every play requires a rules refresh... I like medium-heavy weight thematic games, which often have this problem. I'm willing to slog through rulebooks - sometimes - but people I play with aren't. But an alternative to getting rid off the games are summaries. The Esoteric Order of Gamers is a lifesaver! And sometimes I make my own.

You keep saying Blood Rage is like Rising Sun but they're completely different. The only similarities are the minis (armies and monsters), the 3 rounds, and the point track. Mechanically and thematically everything else is different. Blood rage has identical clans, drafting, battles that are declared, rage meter than each player uses for different actions, battles determined by secret card played, provinces destroyed each round. Rising Sun has variable player powers, a shop, fortresses you build, alliances, all players take the same actions, God shrines, battles happen at a predetermined time, battles use a coin bidding system, set collection, and negotiating.

I must say that I keep games that will get played… maybe in 3-5 years: there are not so many games that I find remarkable that I'm ready to get rid of the ones that I do find exceptional. It's such a marvelous thing to be fully enthused for a game that keeping this sense of wonder is a priority, for me. This is more of an esthetic criterion than a pragmatic one, but it is still some measure of the utility of a game.

I feel the excitement dwindling point. I backed Endless Winter but tbh I don't really want it any more. Luckily, I think it will be an easy sell. Probably BNIS. I love the art and the theme but I'm beginning to think the criticism that it looks like a bunch of disjointed mechanisms are right. 2020 seems ages ago now and I was very new to the hobby. I've played so many solid games since I backed it that I kinda think I have games already that scratch the same itches it would.

My number one motivator to sell a game is - When I look at a game and I cant immediately say to myself if I had the right group over I would pull this off the shelf immediately. If I run out of shelf space I ask myself -Do I have a game that scratches the same itch that I would rather play -And finally ill consider the weight of the game. I am more prone to sell heavy and Gateway games as I find gateway games don't have enough to them to capture my attention for more then a few plays and heavy games because they are harder to table.

I need to sell my Warhammer underworld, cos i have the core boxes and a lot of expansion all painted and i am not plaing it. I am a bit hold because i made a costum wooden box for it (and is not too good quality [i saw carpenter video after that build]) and i dont have the original boxes anymore wich made me scheptical that anyone wuld want it. If you manage to play it it wuld bee a nice to see a gamplay (non tournament competitive) and a video "Play this not that" with Super Fantasy Brawl and i also think that it wuld convince you that Super fantasy brawl is a direct comparison yu'll probably enjoy more.

What is more you've got this deluxe 10cm of height with Iron Clays. I've got rerail edition which are only 5cm height. Thanks to this putting Brass on Brass you've got 10cm height which = one normal game :D SO it's just one game with 2 maps for different number of players

Same for me. Lancashire feels more interactive: (1) There are fewer industry types, so players are more likely to fight over the same ones. (2) The distant market can close, so players would then be more likely to flip opponent (port) tiles. (3) The personal player boards are simpler so shift focus more to the common space.

@@RottenJeeves Oh yeah, I forgot about the beer. At first, I liked that it functioned like a hybrid between coal and iron. Because you can use your own beer from anywhere but must connect to an opponent’s beer to use it, you are incentivized to squirrel away your beer and stay away from opponents.
