As many muslim apologist do, in this case Tariq Ramadan tried to defend the horrific doctrines of islam that are in direct conflict with modern human values. But Christopher Hitchens mopped the intellectual floor with him in this debate.

Christopher Eric Hitchens (13 April 1949 - 15 December 2011) was an Anglo-American author, columnist, essayist, orator, religious and literary critic, social critic, and journalist. Hitchens was the author, co-author, editor or co-editor of over 30 books.
As an antitheist, he regarded concepts of a god or supreme being as a totalitarian belief that impedes individual freedom. He argued in favour of free expression and scientific discovery, and that it was superior to religion as an ethical code of conduct for human civilization.

Have to say Tariq's opening is a pretty compelling argument to the actual debate question. Violence has been perpetuated by pretty much every faith at one point or another and continues to be. So contending Islam is somehow more so really seems to be missing the point and scapegoating a much larger problem on all Muslims.

Personally don't think it's fair to paint Islam with one wide brush but hat to share that I Had to wiki Tariq. Just started the debate, but listened to many like it. Good grief talk about red flags on Tariq: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tariq_Ramadan#Allegations_of_rape_and_sexual_violation. I can't help but wonder what Mr. Hitchens would have to say about that?!
