I already held the FIA accountable for Bianchi's accident, but seeing that they were warned before, reprimanded Brundle for warning them, still didn't want to listen in 2014, and even put the blame on Bianchi...

The FIA abruptly sacked Gary Hartstein (Sid Watkin's successor) during the 2012 US GP weekend and never gave an explaination. The following year he began to raise his concerns about the FIA's attitude & inaction on safety under Jean Todt in public on his blog. After attempts to intimidate and silence him failed, in December 2014 Jean Todt sent his old crony Gérard Saillant to Liege hospital to try and get Gary Hartstein sacked from his job there. Fortunately the head of the hospital asked two questions - does this have anything to do with the hospital or confidential patient information? - then told Gérard Saillant to get lost. Nice guys the FIA....

The FIA was wrong to have a tractor out on track at that time. It’s undeniable. Should have never happened. But denying that bianchi also held blame is wrong. Double waved yellows mean slow and be ready to stop. Still running in excess of 120 mph is not slowing and being ready to stop in the wet. Imagine how different the story is if the tractor isn’t out and it’s just marshals and bianchi had hit a marshal instead. Odds on marshal loses their life and now bianchi has to answer why he didn’t slow more. The tractor was wrong but so was he.

@@anthonycoffey1992he was reprimanded for ignoring red flags. Which he objectively did. Imagine if sainz car was still on track, the track went red at the same time and instead of passing a tractor he hit sainz, his car and a marshal at high speed because he didn’t lift. Whole different story, gasly deserved more. Tractor being there was also wrong but gasly owns part too. Wouldn’t have been nearly as scary of an incident if gasly had lifted properly.

I would be happy with the GP4 Series only if you can upload the highlights for each race on youtube instead of the entire stream :)

There was also a similar incident during qualifying for the 1998 (I believe) German Grand Prix. A stranded car was being lifted out of the gravel by a tractor. Brundle mentioned how uncomfortable it made him, pointing out that if one car can make it that far into the gravel, they all can. You can find the video on KZread.

History doesn’t repeat but it really really does rhyme quite tragically sometimes. In this case it was a tragedy waiting to happen unfortunately. Another incident that comes to mind is the Nurburgring-sudschlife race where it rained and poured and people crashed into the recovery vehicles

I'm trying to remember who it was but someone got aquaplaning very early and flew into the barrier beside the tractor at high speed. I remember even then as a daft teenager that this was very serious but nothing got done until Juels. As soon as I saw the tractor move on the live tv pictures I knew it was bad for someone 😢

Here is a fun fact. The original Japanese Grand Prix of 1963, run at Suzuka for sports cars ... was won by then 24 year old Peter Warr in a Ford powered Lotus 23. Warr would later become famous as Colin Chapman's right hand man at Lotus and took over running the team when Chapman died suddenly in 1982.

I have a feeling that the Japanese mentality of "try to not get in the way of others" might've played a role in why they had the recovery vehicle out while the race was somewhat still ongoing, because they wanted to hurry (in a stealth way) to clean it up so the incident doesn't bother the race itself.

from what I remember hearing during some late 2010's SuperGT broadcasts: Japanese professional racing driving standards are essentially "if there is a yellow flag YOU WILL NOT CRASH" and seems to be true in their domestic series. It just ends up at odds with F1 having different yellow flag standards, and Japanese marshals being accustomed to their domestic standards.

That honestly wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. The odds that the FIA at large was aware of that particular side of Japanese culture and its implications are slim to none. Hell they're probably still slim-to-none today, Tsunoda and Honda or no.

The 1994 season with all its incidents, sounds like it took place in the 60s.

The Gp4 idea seems very intriguing . I'm up for it

1:55 it was clear it was deliberate, SCH rear right wheel was not straight after hitting the wall, wich means suspension/rod whatever was broken, and SCH moved the steering very strange to compensate the damaged wheel, so he knew his car was broken.

Ok, he had damage to the suspension.... And? That still doesn't prove any sort of deliberate malice against Hill. At best, it suggests the desperation of Michael's defense, but the same could be said of the desperation of Damon's lunge. There was a straight ONE CORNER LATER, but Damon just HAD to try it from hopelessly far back. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Assuming Schumacher didn't receive the race bans, that would be a VERY interesting season--one I'm quite sad of which we were deprived. I still reckon Senna takes it. The Williams was a weapon the second half of the season. But, who knows, Schumi might have upped his game to match.

All of us were robbed of a great rivalry, not to mention losing Roland after he’d finally made it F1.. Makes you wonder how likely Schumacher’s move to Ferrari would’ve been if Senna had been around to keep giving him a run for his money year after year. Interesting thought. The Michael may have been more motivated to beat Senna outright as opposed to seeking glory with Ferrari. In the end we’ll never know.

Fantastic vid as always Aidan 😀 To add to the long list of nasty crashes in 1994 was Andrea Montermini's in practice for Spain. The aftermath was quite chilling, as it draws parallels with Ratzenberger's crash. It was only a couple of races after Imola and the TV footage shows him motionless in the cockpit of a Simtek, with the front of the car destroyed to the extent that you can see his feet. Reports seem to differ on his injuries (fractured ankle & broken toe or foot), but he also appears to hit his head on the steering wheel, which could have been very serious.

The 1994 idea you have really is something that I would like to see, especially using Grand Prix 4.

I never knew that about his tyre change. Goodness me that was some bloody drive.

Back in the days when I was a massive F1 fan, so I got up early to watch this...and we were introduced to the hapless Taki Inoue....And a great drive from Damon.

The fact that last year there was a tractor out on track while Gasley was catching up to the safety car shows that lessons still haven't been learnt

Man, given the whole mess that was 1994, Imola and this race included, it's really unbelivable it took the FiA another 20 years + the deaths of Henry Surtees and Jules Bianchi until they finally adressed the threads of recovery vehicles with cars still racing and debree hitting drivers in open cockpits. Also a phenomenal drive from Hill. Yes may not have had the consistancy and drive of a Schumacher or Senna, but he was a force to be reckoned with on his days.

I dont know if anyone has said this yet but in commentary at a race in 1998 (im not sure which one) but brundle actually predict bianchi, somthing along the lines of "One day someone is gonna end up under there" and then joking about how different circuits have different tractors and him saying "im not sure which one i'd go underneath"

Surprised you would say the Schumacher/Hill championship deciding incident looks less and less intentional the more you watch it because the more I watch it the more intentional it looks.

Taking you as speaking straight, I agree. And I was convinced watching it live. He was my only absolute favourite in c.50 years of watching motorsports. (I have a great deal of respect for pretty much any driver/rider of anything dangerous, even if I don't like them, I was just spent after being a Damon fangirl throughout his career. My first memory of an F1 race was his dad's last Monaco...) Given Aidan's dry sense of humour (and him being a Damon fan too), I'm thinking he was speaking tongue-in-cheek.

I disagree. Assuming Aidan meant it sincerely, I think Schumacher (or anyone, for that matter) could genuinely claim that it was a racing incident on that occasion. Schumacher was substantially further along than the far more nefarious Prost/Senna incident in '89, and Damon could have just as easily waited for the straight immediately following the right (assuming Schumacher had enough damage to reduce his pace, which was likely). It was an ill-timed and desperate move, much like Piastri on Sainz at Spa in T1 this year. And, just as Palmer blamed Piastri for sticking a car in a disappearing gap, I would blame Damon for doing likewise.

Another warning was the Brazilian Grand Prix 2003, when Schumacher came quite close to hitting a recovery vehicle after spinning off in the rain.

I remember watching this race live on TV and thinking there was no way Schumacher wouldn't close the gap such that he would take the aggregate win. After all, he was the class driver of the field and already considered a rain master that early in his career. That Hill held him at bay has stuck with me ever since and consequently consider it his finest performance in F1.

It's a good idea for a stream. Especially because Senna had not scored any points up to the 1st of May, making the "what if" more interesting.

I was surprised by last year's Gasly close call, can't believe it happened that long again first

I watched Brundle's crash in 1996 in Melbourne live, and I've heard about his big crash in Tyrelle in the US GP practice session, but I never knew about this crash for Brundle at Suzuka. It feels crazy to say, but it's lucky we have still have Martin today and also that we didn't lose more of his fellow drivers of the era. I was never a fan of Bernie Ecclestone, but he was right about one thing, people don't want to see drivers killed for entertainment.

i was watching a replay of the 2005 japanese gp and brundle said in the commentary box that one of the recovery vehicles almost took killed him in 94 and it honestly gave me the chills because everyone knows what happened 9 years later

For clarification the Benetton did have Traction Control. It was very cleverly implemented by using intake air pressure to manage RPM as an 'engine protection' measure. Engineers have admitted to it.

2023 Dutch GP brought me back. Back when FIA wasn't afraid of wet weather conditions.

More like unknowingly he involuntarilyset a ticking time bomb, 1994 was such a bizzare/tragic year. Brundle repeatedly warn about crane at racing speed until eventually it set off when Bianchi's tragedy happened.

I think it’s the 1998 European Grand Prix where Brundle talks about not liking tractors on track saying along the lines of if one of them can they all can

12:!6 Id also say as a finest drive Silverstone 95 until he took a bad decision, but before that he was driving perfect, right on the limit and completely determined to outpace SCH, he was superb in his mission.

Excelent video, really interesting but also sad and frustrating how the FIA had a chance two decades previously to learn lessons and prevent the Binachi crash

Get memories but no mention of Damon's one and only pitstop during the race when the pit crew couldn't get the right rear wheel off. Added a little more to what was Damon's finest drive in fending off Michael. I would love to see the 'what if' 94 season on GP4 too :)

On facebooks F1 groups its crazy how people dont believe Aidan when pointing out that schumachers car didnt have traction control but it was launch control and the sound senna thought it was traction control was a early blown diffuser design. Shows this video and still get: no, wikipedia, and sennas documentary and other sites clearly say schumachers benetton had: Traction control, launch control, faster refueling than everyone else, ride height control, etc due to option 13 and illegal benetton car. xD Like you say: at SPA 1994 where schumacher won, but was dsq due to wooden planket was below allowed thickness, FIA claiming it was due to schumacher riding the curbs too hard... I have never seen before or after another such case, might be me who just have missed other drivers getting dsq due to wooden planket underneath the car being too thinn, but to me so far it seems schumacher is only driver in history to get that penalty and I doubt his spinn on the curb would cause that, Im sure FIA did it to make the championship live on and give Hill a chance, afterall viewing numbers was sky high and making the championship go on to final round makes for more tv viewers and excitment.

Trulli was DQ'd from the 2001 US GP for illegal plank wear.

One thing I never understood about the cars back then is why the cockpit sides were so low. Don’t know if it was a regulation against it or what, because surly the teams would want them high for aero reasons, but every drivers head and shoulders are exposed from the side.

You forgot Montermini smashing his legs up in the Simtek during Spain practice. He never drove in F1 again

i don't know if you've read it or thought about getting it but there's a paragraph or 2 about this exact race in damon & johnny herbert's book, i can't remember the exact quote by damon but he basically says that during the race he thought about senna and "asked" him for some help to close the gap, then that lap happened... makes you think abit regardless of your beliefs IMO

Extra information. At the time, if a race was stopped after 2 laps but before 75% was completed then restarted, then it would be the original distance - 3 laps. Schumacher would have gotten him if he had those 3 extra laps, and that rule didn't exist

Another thing that strikes me here about this time. Damon Hill. Some love him. Some are not so sure. Yes. The Williams was a fine car. No question. But Damon I think improved as a driver over time. I really believe it was a great result when he finally took the title in 96. He drove better as he grew in the job.

I'm pretty sure JJ's engine failed on the formation lap at the spot where the track goes from under the bridge. Also, JJ didn't suffer a back injury, he broke two vertebrae in his neck

Martin mentioned the telehandler issue a load of times but nobody listened, not just during his driving career but also as a commentator. Didn't Senna almost fire himself under one? There was a big crash, bits all over the track, a couple of slow cars dawdling around, and he just arrives on the scene facing the wrong way and does a neat job of parking in the gravel right next to everything. Can't remember where/when though.

Why on Grand Prix 4 and not on Grand Prix 2, the game that actually was about the 1994 season? I know GP4 is the favourite F1 game of people but my heart always goes with GP2 so.... but yeah, go for it!

I mean at some point the driver attempting to overtake the Michael should know that eventually he is going to turn in for whatever the next corner is. Was the Michael a ruthless 7 times WDC? Can't tell if the OP is trolling or serious. Do you actually think that the Jerez '97 incident with Villeneuve and Schumacher was an accident or a 'racing incident'? I'm curious to hear your reasoning if so.

As to your market research: Yes, please!!! Is there any chance you would be willing to race as one of the varying cast of drivers, going to as many different teams as you could, given the spread of drivers popping in and out of F1? If not, I am curious what you"re planning. I greatly enjoy your content, but the idea of letting a 100% sim 1994 season run sounds like it involves a lot of hunting for the best camera angles, plus writing a script. If you're up for that, it sounds like a lot of work. Wouldn't that involve finding the best racing through the whole event, the camera angles that fit best for that, plus writing a script around the action? The idea has merit, I'd be a very attentive viewer if you do this, but as a loyal viewer, I do know that seems so tedious a job in hunting the best racing each lap to further edit, then scripting everything, that doing such a thing would mean far less of what we're used to. I do apologize if I got something wrong. I just thought, "Full AI 1994 with Senna the whole way through," and the rest is blurry. I do hope that mine and other comments help you hone your idea. Would you please discuss what you thought of the feedback you got in future videos?
