In 1974 Asia got its first GM - Eugenio Torre. He is a living legend and on 4th of November 2019 he turned 68 years old. Back in the day when he was young, in 1976, he faced the great Anatoly Karpov over the board. Karpov was the reigning World Champion and was dominating the chess world. Karpov would hardly ever lose a single game and won almost every single tournament he took part in for nearly a decade.
Anatoly had come to the Philippines for a tournament in which Torre was also taking part. Torre, who sat opposite Karpov for his game. The Filipino GM believed in himself and from the black side of a sharp Sicilian defeated the World Champion! What a game it was! In this video IM Sagar Shah caught up with Torre to analyze this amazing encounter.
