Sometimes you just have to say no... I explain what it feels like when people are staring, feeding tube is beeping, people want to take pictures and it all feels like too much! Do you know that feeling? When life feels a bit overwhelming? We also give a shout-out to all of you wheelchair users who display grit and grace on a daily basis! High five guys!

We are great liars when we're asked "How are you?" The answer is always fine because what our day is really like is just too complicated to explain. And let's face it, they really don't want to hear it either. We can't be all smiles all the time. Thankfully I'm no longer in a wheelchair but I'm still attached to this walker. It's exhausting. It must be especially so for you since you are becoming so recognizable. God bless and may you have many more good days than bad.

  • @liahonagirl

I agree completely! Though, I have learned that there are *some* people who genuinely want to know the real answer when they ask 'how are you?'. It's tricky figuring out who is who though . . . so usually I say something like 'fine', or if they see me out and about . . . 'I'm so glad to be here!' I use a cane when I'm out, but I'm pretty sure a walker is going to be in my very near future. This whole chronic illness thing is for the birds! I hope your day was a good one! 🙂

I cannot begin to imagine what you go through Mary (or anyone else with a chronic illness). The closest I’ve come to experiencing what you did in Ikea was when I was pregnant with my son, I had to use a motorized cart when I would go to the store and I always felt in the way and had to deal with people staring. My oldest son was with me and he would stare right back. You are right, anyone who has to use a wheelchair daily definitely has a lot of grit!

They deliberately build it so that there's only one obvious way through the two floors. There are "hidden" pass throughs, but it's hard to find them and it's really hard to find the one that leads to the exit which on a whole different floor than the entrance--I think. It's a trip.

Be very careful with polyurethane and stains, varnish, paints, and removers...especially that close to a hot water tank if it's gas, or if there is a gas furnace down there in your basement. Could accidently have a vapor explosion...they happen everyday. So, be very careful.

I remember the first time I had to use a wheelchair in public. I felt so awkward and like a phoney. It was at the natural history museum. My braces and cane were simply not enough after so may hours on my feet. Then my step-mom (love her!) walks up to me with this chair and tells me to get in. And I don’t dare refuse her. Lol. It may have made me feel like a sceptical. But I was able to finish the day, I don’t have to sit out of the fun. I’m so great full that I don’t need to use a chair on the regular. Yet so great full that I can use one when I really need to. Your so inspirational Mary! You keep going regardless of the obstacles in your way!! Never let things get you down.

I have been watching you since the new year and have learned soooo much about CF and have come to appreciate and understand it so much better. Is there anything that others can do to help someone with CF, other than not staring, leaving the dog alone etc...? Would it be o.k. To stand by someone while they are having a coughing episode to be able to assist them if they need something until they have regained their composure? You have a wonderful one of a kind of husband, who is so understanding and patient of your needs! Wish more of those kind of men existed! As a wheelchair user myself for the last 39 years I totally understand when you talk about being uncomfortable being stared at. I was just 5 when I started using wheelchair and it was highly unusual to see anyone in a wheelchair let alone a child out and about back in 1978/9. The stares I used to get really got me and my sister down when we went out with mum and dad so they told us just to stare back, which we did and few times people said to us that it was rude to stare. Today things have changed for the better or maybe I'm just use to people stare!!

Thanks for sharing that bit of info! Ollie is so good and absolutely adorable! I have had countless people just rush up to Ezra (my medical alert dog) and start trying to pet him. He knows he isn’t supposed to be petted while he’s wearing his work vest and will actually keep ducking his head away like as to tell the person they’re not supposed to be doing that. But it’s still unfair to both the dog and the handler! And his blaze orange vest has a patch that boldly states “IGNORE ME! NO touch or eye contact!”. I have had people literally get down on their hands and knees and stare directly into his eyes until he feels so intimidated that he ends up barking at them and then they act like he’s horrible for barking at them. And no, he should not bark, but he IS still a dog and they shouldn’t do that to him! It makes my day when someone comments on how cute Ezra is or how good he’s being, but as easily as you can make my day, you can also make it a very difficult day by distracting him or scaring him! Just an idea...maybe sometime you could make a little informative video on service dog rules and manners? :) It is crazy how many ADULTS I have come in contact with that don’t have the first clue about not petting or interacting with a service dog. Oh, don’t we all just love the approaching “doggie” mob? It gets SO overwhelming at times! Sadly, I’ve found children actually listen better than adults the majority of the time. It should be the adults that are being a good example to the children, but that’s not usually the case. If you would like to see more about my special little man you can go here: m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/mKKKrNyTYJTWZdo.html I’m new to your vlogs so I’ve kinda been exploring around and getting to know y’all, but I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate y’all doing this. I have an incurable, chronic illness (not CF) and it’s very encouraging watching these videos. The way you share not only the reality of life, but also the strength that can be found in the Lord! Thank you for taking the time to do this! Oh, by the way....the very WORST time my feeding pump has decided to rebel is in church...right as the preacher is taking a breath and it’s dead silent throughout the congregation! Ack!

I wish it was that easy - from my experience both as a disabled person, and the mother of a disabled daughter, most people are dismissive, and think that people with invable illnesses should just get over it. If you have not experienced that , you have been lucky. It is far more likely to be told - like I have been - well, just eat more stuff with iron, when they find out that I have chronic anemia, or that I should be eating more shellfish, because I have hypthyroidism. That is my experience, and the experience of many other disabled people that I know. The mother in me wants to give Mary a hug, not dismiss her with my lack of knowledge of CF - by the way we have lost 6 children in our family to CF (not my own, I am not a carrier, my husband is). Never assume what people are going through, just because you think you are helpful

Charity Smith Don't worry, you're comment wasn't dismissive of Mary's illness at all! Your suggestion was helpful (and harmless) even if Mary may have already known, which you have no way of knowing. Not quite sure if Claudia misread your comment, or if she was having a rough day, but I didn't see anything wrong with what you said. I have a degenerative, progressive, and ultimately terminal disease (Mitochondrial Disease), that I have lived with since birth, so I know all to well about what Claudia was referring to regarding people dismissing and undermining my disease with simple "cures". However, I didn't feel like you crossed into that territory whatsoever. Making helpful and humble suggestions, like you made, are perfectly fine. In my opinion, the moment a "suggestion" becomes harmful is when the person is demanding, dismissive, and ignorantly acting like my illness or challenges have an easy fix, with the expectation that if you do what they say you'll be "cured". And again, in my personal opinion (with respect for Claudia's personal opinion), your comment was 100% harmless! 😊 God bless you! 💗

Thank you Mary and Peter for your videos that are not only super entertaining (they brighten my days) but also very informative and educational. My knowledge and awareness of CF has certainly grown. More importantly, my knowledge of service animals and handler advocacy. I was recently at a doctors appointment for my pregnancy and was waiting for an elevator with an older man who had a service dog and an older couple. Without thinking the woman reached out to pet the dog which distracted the dog and caused the dog to pull on the man (who I then realized was blind). He did not say anything, however, I felt the need to help him. I informed the woman to respect the dog is working and when distracted can not accurately do his or her work. I asked if the handler was okay and helped him on to the elevator. All this to say, without your videos, I maybe would not have known how to handle a situation like that (or even have been aware). I certainly hope that my stepping in was not seen as over stepping but I thought sharing information and awareness is always a positive.

I sympathize with you, Mary. Last night we needed to grab some goods at our local, very large, hardware store. Usually I use my mobility scooter when there is a lot of walking involved. For some stupid reason (pride), I decided to walk, instead. Needless to say, I was completely exhausted when I got home, so I fell asleep straight after our dinner of take away food. So today it is a day of doing nothing, in order to recuperate from my insane decision to walk in a place that I no longer normally walk. Never again. I need to go do some shopping for my infirmed mother tomorrow and order some reading glasses to be made. Needless to say, I will not be walking. I am truly thankful for my motorized scooter which previously I restricted to using on holidays, overseas. Not any more. Last night made me realise that I need to use the scooter whenever we are out of the house, which for me, is extremely rare. Mary, we need to ignore people who stare at us and do what is right for us, in the moment.

As someone with a Genetic Neuro-Muscular disease. I have gone from Walking sticks to a roolator walker back to walking sticks with AFO's (YAY!!!) But I also use a power wheelchair for long distances and around town if I can even get inside businesses (needs a small 1 step ramp or transition ramp) but I use it all over Orlando and Central East Coast of Florida, and Salt Lake City UT and on Planes and Trains. Its true I maybe a bit at first I had to get used to be in Public with it but no more I think of it exactly as you did a means of Transportation for Long Days and distances where I cannot make it through a grocery store at times. It has given me so much more independence to travel Solo! You should never ever think you are a nuisance or a bother to people or worry about taking up space. You always deserve to have enough room to move and function in public spaces and if you cannot then its that store or city fault in not providing accessibility! The more I travel the more I will record and get the word out that certain stores or city's need to fix their accessibility issues. Keep vlogging and let it be heard about any accessibility issues you come up against so someone might watch your struggles and do the right thing to fix accessibility issues!

I completely understand the overwhelming feeling in a chair. When I first lost the ability to walk I felt the same way but over two and a half years I have become much much more comfortable in my chair. Yes I do feel like I’m in the way a lot of times but I don’t feel as overwhelmed. Hopefully you never have to get comfortable with being in a chair but I hope that It becomes a little easier when you need to use it. Thank you for acknowledging how hard it can be to use a chair. Some days are definitely hard but I’m extremely thankful to have my chair so I can live life. My chair gives me so much independence despite the struggles.

Good Evening Mary,Peter and Ollie boy from Surrey England. My Daughter is in a wheelchair has chronic heart and lung disease. She also has a beautiful service dog a labradoodle. Chino. When we go out we are literally surrounded by the very enthusiastic public. Some ask to stroke him others just lunge forward and decide it's just fine. She gets totally exhausted. The more we teach the children they in turn will teach the adults. You are both amazing educators. We have learned so much. Thank you.

I’m a young wheelchair user (in now 24) I can get around on forearm crutches for short distances, but I have a custom wheelchair. It’s given me so much more independence. I had to get it during college because I was getting sicker from burning all the calories of crutching everywhere. I actually get stared at less in my wheelchair than I did with my crutches because it is more normalized. I would sort of drag my left side with the crutches and pull myself along and it was very difficult to get around. Now I can keep up, and be comfortable. I also don’t have to worry about passing out when i use my chair. My heart rate stays more controlled, too. My knees also hyperextend so walking is painful/more difficult because of that.

We sound very similar! I am just learning how to walk again after being in a chair for two and a half years. I absolutely love love my custom power assist chair and the independence it gives me. My left leg/foot also drops and my knees hyper extend also. Also gave issues with POTs and passing out. I know it all can be hard but keep pushing on!

A few months ago I was with my SDiT at my state Capitol. Because I’m Puppy Raising with an organization, I can’t ask people to stop taking pictures. My parents and I were followed for about half an hour by these guys taking pictures of my puppy whenever I would stop and take pictures of my puppy. Even though he wasn’t doing anything wrong and I wasn’t breaking any rules, I was uncomfortable with the idea of strangers taking pictures of my dog. I totally understand you being uncomfortable with that as well

It IS hard to live life from a wheelchair. It's especially difficult raising a child when you are in a wheelchair. Particularly when that child has ADHD and other issues and basically goes 90 miles an hour from the moment her eyes open up until the time they close at night. I did not really think about it when I was doing it though. It was just my life. It was never any different so it rarely even crossed my mind. Now that my daughter is much older and a little more independent I look back on those days and I honestly don't know how I did it. I guess it's because I never really thought about it at the time. If I had then it probably would have been much harder. I was too busy being focused on keeping her safe and taking care of her to worry about any struggle I may have had. I just felt so blessed that Creator had given me such an amazing miracle to care for that any struggle I may have had was so worth it! My daughter is my everything. My relationship with her is what gets me through this new phase in my life of being in the nursing home and my health and independence slipping even further away from me. I am so blessed! I have an amazing daughter and amazing friends! I have heard you say it a million times and it is so true. There is always something to be thankful for. I also try very hard to remind myself that no matter how hard things may be on any one given day, there is always someone who is struggling much worse then myself and facing much greater challenges then I am.

My Journey With Meadow I've been partnered with my SD for almost 7 years. He does medical alert as well as Mobility stability. I simply tell people he's not a pet and he's working, please don't distract him from his job. If they are persistent and don't get the hint, I will smile and humorously say "You wouldn't want strangers petting you and talking to you when you're trying to concentrate on your job, would you?". Most people just don't realize that these highly trained dogs are responsible for our health and safety.

I have a video of "what not to do to a service dog handler". 2 men, following me and Chopper around Walgreens asking such intrusive questions. Makes me thankful for his "Do not dare pet" mobility harness cape/make shift vest because of PTSD it is so much harder. Most said I wasn't stern enough but yeah. At the end I was so upset that I turned off the video, hurried up and paid for my stuff and left. Apparently when you put a pitbull in a service dog vest it turns him from a "vicious breed" and into a "cuddling puppy" instantly. But yeah, would rather someone ask then not ask. I'm thinking on getting the patch with the f-word. I know you would never get that but when it says "Don't you dare "f**cking touch" (without the stars) people tend to stay away.
