When a Goalie gets a breakaway...

Спорт

Durin the 2023 KHL All Stars semi final game something pretty unexpected happened when Sochi goaltender Mikhail Berdin joined the rush and assisted in securing their 6th goal of the game.

    I really do think that the Center ice rule for goalies is just plain dumb. They let the goalie play the puck but not join the rush. If a team wants to take the chance and let the toile in on the offense, what’s wrong with it? I mean, it happens in soccer. It’s fun to watch. So where’s the problem?

  • @DDWyss

    @DDWyss

    Agreed. Why not let goalies come out? It's almost going to be better for the opposing team every single time anyway.

    You'd have to think it through - could goalies be checked like other players? Could they use glove? How about pads? What stick they'd be allow to use? Biggest issue is probably the safety of a goalie. But yeah, it'd be fun.

  • @choppergunner8650

    @choppergunner8650

    @@DDWyssI think it's because a goalie hurt himself in the 1960s. Goalies used to join the attack back then. Needing a goal to take it to overtime, seems like he crossed the red line into the attack zone, ended up falling on the ice, and since the net was empty, an opponent took the puck and launched it at the net. However, the goalie tried to prevent that and the puck hit his face. I may be severely incorrect here, but that's what I heard.

  • @DDWyss

    Goalkeepers in football aren't covered in several extra pounds of protective gear. Also, since they would be treated as any other player outside the crease (much as a goalkeeper is treated like anyone else in football outside his box), It would be open season on them and the ensuing BS that would cause. Truth is, they wouldn't help the offense at all, but hinder it. If they do want to help the offense, there is a rule for that already. They can stop at the bench and let an actual skater do so....

    Heh! I love seeing moments like that, it almost happened in the NHL once, I forget what team the leafs were playing against at the time, but mike palmateer was the goaltender at the time and there was an opurtunity for him to skate up the ice, with another player on a breakaway, but he stopped at center ice and gave the puck to one of the leafs and backed back up into his net, he really wanted to go on the breakaway from what I saw, when he was shaking his head at himself for not doing it.
