Hades 2 has released in early access. Oh my god. This channel started to grow right after I got into the first game so there is a lot of sentimentality there. Oh right, I also moved away. Crazy. These past few months have been non-stop go, go, go. It'll be good to breath.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from Reddit and my own email while giving advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

When I play dm I usually don’t care about Paladin oath. It limits role play a bit too much. If players do something out of character I’ll tell them. If they do something evil there’s likely going to be consequences. That being said I do hate how strong Paladin’s are. Depending on the game I just say no Paladins or just allow the player some levels a player wants before multi classing. Sometimes I don’t care and let them in too break the game.

@ArcCaravan I guess the former because you can have the latter without being an issue. Like I've made my pact as simple as "fighting giants and enormous threats to the realms" in a nordic campaign. I'm not the problem for following my oath when the warlock who knows my oath amd tries to free the great old one known as "the dark heart of the forest" with a history of destruction just to see what happens. lol Thankfully, dumbass realized it before we had to break our no pvp rule because I reminded them ooc of the low low bar I had set for having a paladin on his character's side instead of against him. 😂

"Your paladin killed a rapist and is no longer lawful." "Ahh, my god was an asshole and not worth following at all. I see, you're looking to deconstruct the alignment system by applying it as stupidly as possible. So I get to switch over to the Oathbreaker sublcass or Anti-Paladin class depending on which edition of D&D this is and get to subvert the idea of a Paladin by being the kind of hero who stops rapists but has powers traditionally evil. And I oppose the kinds of gods who permit rape and unjust laws, while they have powers that are traditionally good. This is very clever, and not at all a transparent attempt to bully a player with bad rulings. It would have been good to know the theme of your campaign before making a character however."

Now is it defined as blind obedience to the law of the land in the rules of D&D? No, of course not. But D&D still has Rule 0 which ultimately gives the DM the ability to interpret or change things as they see fit. So that's not a winning argument either. Understand I'm not defending the DM. I think he intentionally abused the power given to him by the rules of D&D to harass and bully a player. But since I'm not defending the DM I feel it's useful to note you're making the same argument he did. You're both appealing to a personal interpretation of the rules as binding to other players. Your interpretation is better for me personally, but also completely meaningless at his table. It is more productive, in this context, to argue that your interpretation is better, not that your interpretation is correct.

Intro Story: So if orcs are attacking the town, and are burning down houses, and the paladin kills them when they get to the ward where the elves live, does he lose his powers because he didn't stop them when they were burning down the human ward? What a weird world. Good on OP for leaving.

I played a good paladin who was lawful in a dystopian evil setting. My description of his alignment was that he had a strict code, an unbending view of right and wrong that he held himself to. He rejected the laws of society and followed a higher law. But also, alignment is kinda stupid and meaningless and should really only be used as guidelines for the GM to control monsters or flavor gods on the fly.

whenever you find a store offering an intro game for new players and the GM is poop, it speaks volumes about the management of the store. If the GM does not make the game fun and engaging for the new people it is not creating new customers for the store. The whole point of these events is to convert curious into customers. If the store manager does not step up and run a basic game and terminate the GM who is being rude then it shows he values, A his friend the GM more than money (not a bad thing) B the GM more than new customers - a bad thing for a store, C his friend more than the Game That speaks so much about whether it want to go to that store again, clearly they are not someone who is truly about the game and wanting to introduce it to new people. They have seen the store as a way of converting a hobby into money, (a valid reason) but they have let the idea of them generating the money change their view of introducing new people to it. Meaning bad as managing, bad in running a company, bad as customer facing. Basically a bad store. Yes the GM might be terrible but the Store manager is the one who allows them to do that.

I have a phobia myself but I usually keep it more a veil than a line. This is because my phobia is around needles and other sharp objects under the skin. I have worked really hard on making it so this phobia doesn’t interfere with my regular day to day. I can still go get the shots I need in a timely manner, I can still do my work and training as a nursing assistant. I am a very stubborn person who doesn’t like being told no about such things (other peoples’s boundaries are not included in this stubbornness streak). So yeah, been working for many years on that. I have been very lucky that my DM’s (I play at multiple tables) and I have all been able to work out how to veil this phobia so I’m not feeling the effects of it during the game. Namely, vague descriptions is how. This was particularly important because I usually play an archer and I’ve even played a blood cleric before. I have no actual problem with gore or vivid descriptions that aren’t about sharp objects, but yeah, the small needle like things, can’t deal. Immediate hair raising up my arms and a chill down my spine and not in a fun way, the kind that comes just before you get the actual fight or flight. Now, I actually like horror (the genre) though. I’m also pretty good at it. I don’t dm but I’ve helped various DM’s and my brother construct some short campaigns and oneshots for the horror genre. I make it clear that tension and staging is the true key to good horror. Lots of “made you look” type of things. I haven’t actually gotten to play in one of the horror ones I have helped write up but I’m always told by the dm and even some of the other players if I know them, that they loved it. I know a lot of that is putting it into the right hands of the right dm, but it feels nice that I’ve not had a bad review. Now, one very big thing I construct with this is also a list of things for the dm to ask of the players before they run the game. Namely, phobias, fears, and other triggers. And I help the dm construct a rough alternative method of incorporating something so they don’t lose the horror feel but still accommodate the player’s boundaries. I very much take pride in this part and it has helped each time. So yeah. As someone who loves constructing the horror stuff, I’m at least glad that the dm Keeper, learned their lesson and now does session zero. It’s the most important session you’ll ever have.

The first DM I ever had was a stickler for rules, even when he interpreted them wrong He was also overtly sexual, session 0 he had us split into girl group and guy group, ran separate sessions The guys had a normal start, us girls encountered a giant.... naked. He went into detail about how his D was hard from just waking up and went into detail about how it waved around and stuff. We ended up just chasing the giant away Later in a different game most of our team got captured and we had to make new characters, I asked what was gunna happen to the old ones, I was expecting a jail break session or smth along those lines But no. He informed me that my blue tiefling girl was now a sxx slave and that she was a "rich lords favorite because she had wings" and the other characters were all assumed dead except the cat girl, she was also a slave There was a lot of little things that kept happening that made a few of us uncomfortable but we put up with it because it was our first time around and didn't know any other DMs He even ERPd one session instead of fading to black despite everyone else trying to stop him (except the one person who was oddly into all of this shit and fueled it more)

Hello. I enjoy your podcasts. Although I don't play TTRPGs, these stories were quite interesting to explore. And this reminded me of a horror story that I had during my Text RPGs, which was the only one in my 5 (or 7? With other words, I play since 13 y.o starting from 2011) years of roleplaying - to my fortune, but was the one that cooled down my interest entirely in collective RPGs - to my misfortune. When I heard more stories, I recalled this story and I cannot brush it off now, because the old feelings are again at my footstep. Not native English speaker, very sorry for the possible mistakes, inappropriate dramatism and length (for the last one I especially apologize). I developed the text RPGs interest myself - no friend recommended to me this genre. When I entered the 1st year university I met a girl who become my friend for the next 3 years, and invited me to that "doomed" forum. It was a Harry Potter themed forum, that my friend registered, and then she recommended it to me, because she liked it: the plot, the rules, the players, the owner, and the "DM" to which I will refer further as the Moderator. Here I need to digress and present my friend, or just Friend. She was a girl, with a very sweet personality, very kind, willing to help, fun get along with. She had this issue of getting attached to people who were kind to her and with whom she had great time. She was the person who would not expect people to be mean especially out of nowhere. And she liked roleplaying, adored HP, I would say she was the expert in the fandom. And - what is very important for her and is very appealing to me - are her posts, which were very aesthetically pleasant to read. She presented me this forum, and her excitement about it transferred to me. However, we needed to get our characters approved by the Moderator before we start playing. Now about the Moderator. The Friend started chatting with this guy about the character and the RPG topics, and with time she just got interested in him in general. I first never though of the Moderator as a problem person: he was strict, indeed, but as I thought, he was just very meticulous about the lore. I love HP, but I'm not a fan, and some lore particularities would slip my attention, so I was willing to trust him. Also I always had the idea of being respectful to other's interests no matter how less they meant to me, and I planned to be very careful so not to spoil the joy, and not to hurt the feelings of the HP fans who were plenty there. The Moderator disapproved my character first, gave me a list of recommendations, and our communication went further in social media because some info I didn't understand, and I really wanted to play the game. I was already active in the out-of-game themes, already had plans for my characters and some ideas whom to play with. With other words, I felt very hyped. The Moderator was very willing to help, and soon my character passed the "face control", although I had to change the ides of her, but I still liked the direction. I was free to play, and I was happy, until my first post. Me and the Friend developed an interaction. We started with our posts, and the first my post was commented by the Moderator, as I have done sometghing allogical from the lore perspective. He told me that the "LeviOsa not LeviosA" spell does not make people levitate, although my Friend who was also very knowlegeable about the lore told that it was not a problem. However we trusted the Moderator, I apologized and changed the writing after I listened to his recommendations how we could make it "lore-friendly". Then the next post, and here we go again, I wrote something that seemed to him wrong, I again listened to his recommendations, and corrected my post. Shave me bald and call me an opposum if I remeber what that was about - the story happened in 2017, and my brain rejects my attempts to recall what had happened at the time. But at some point I didn't feel the gameplay funny anymore, and my motivation was dropped. But there was my Friend that always raised my interest with her roleplaying stories with her character, the plot, with her communication with the Moderator. Her energy helped me to overcome my procrastination, and advance our character's stories. She invited few more friends from our previous FRPG experience, and then she crated few more characters so she could get along with everyone. Creating few more characters was not forbidden by the rules - if you can play with them and not disupt the dynamic of the gameplay then it was fine. The Friend was able to manipulate them all and timely respond with a quality post - she was more productive than me with my only character. However the owner and the Moderator in particular felt uncomfortable with her creating more charaters and asked her to not do this anymore. She could have played with the already created characters but no more new. (This will be a very long story, I am very sorry. Will continue in the first comment )

The Friend understood everything, acknowledged, and stick to her already created characters. And it was not a problem if not my tongue. Once in the out-of-game themes on that forum we and other players discussed my Friend's character in a satirical manner - nothing offensive, it was a playful interaction that my Friend liked as well. The Moderator was chatting with us as well. I joked something like: "be cautious otherwise she'll bring in a new character", meaning that she's really dedicated to the game. The moderator replied with as I thought with a comment and a laughing smile (!!!!): "Oh realy, she will?". We skipped the topic and continued the discussion, then I closed the PC and went to do my stuff. In 10 or so minutes my Friend called me and said very stressed and very disappointed: "Why did I tell the Moderator that she is going to create a new character?". She was nearly crying, saying that the Moderator scolded her very rudely because she's going to create a new character, which she never intended. But I never said that. It was a joke. I told her, invited her to see the conversation, showed her the screens of the chat - I was joking, nothing more, no other intentions. Also I didn't remeber her talking about a new character that she planned to bring, and in the end - she was forbidden from doing so, why she'd break the rules of a game she was so invested in? She told me that: "Sometimes you need to think before talk". And I broke. I had very mixed feelings, and as a very emotive person I felt myh feelings with my skin: I was feeling guilty and miserable because I caused my friend to suffer, and from other side very anger because - WTF was this? WTF wrong I did? I joked like other people, nothing offensive or suspicious, and even if so - instead of addressing me directly "Why did I said so?", or request my clarifications, the Moderator acted like nothing happened, went directly to the Friend, and - without a single question, confirmation or like anything, started scolding her and threatening her. He already was an inportant person for her at this moment, she talked about him a lot, she was more than kind to him, very friendly, very open, she asked me even to make together a video postcard for him for his birthday - and in the end this is happening, WTF!. She's not even the one who should had faced the consequences - it was me who said bulls"t and no the other way around! And me - I was already done with Moderator's constant complaints with my roleplay, but now I cannot even joke in the out-of-game themes? Am I a part of FBI or a whatever RPG forum? I just started feeling very uncomfortable with my limit of agency, and my motivation who already was hanging off the cliff like a mucus on the ogre's nose - now it crippled. I was not willing to stay there anymore. I have shared my desire too leave in the respective theme that was designed for leave-topics and break requests, I was very vague around my reason, so not to instigate any further conflict, and signed out with the intention to never come back. But the story didn't stop here. Everyone on the forum got informed immediately about my leave, since all the newcomers would register to that particular theme, so they all got the notification about my message. The Moderator contacted me immediately, asking why I decided to leave. I gave some ok explanations, politely said that posting in the game took me more real time than I intended, and that was the graduation year (if I'm not mistaken), so no time to play. He seemed to be ok with my words, wished me good luck, encouraged me to write if I want to stay in contact (no way I would have been willing)... and jumped into the private dicussion with the Friend scolding her again for "making me leave the forum". Of course I got to know about it, she called me again, crying and asking me to return, because Moderator was very mad at her, and she didn't know what to do. He gaslighted her with some random bullsh"" about how manic and manipulative she is (like what?), and that she's at fault here. I felt so sorry for her, but I said that I will not. I don't know how I formulated the answer, but I was so pissed off Moderator's behaviour that at the time I could be only more than expressive. And what was more crazy - she still cared about him after everything he told her! I tried to explain her that this guy is crazy - he behaves like a creep, he's aggressive, he's venting his anger on her for absolutely NO reason! And again, instead of asking me directly, he goes to her - and I was never the kind of person who would hide such a thing. If I am asked to give a feedback, I would be frank, if I say something I face the consequences willingly. I was never too shy to stand up for myself and never had the behaviour of a person who would need help. Like - why? Then the Owner of the forum contacted her, seemingly not aware of the situation but willing to understand what was going on under his feet (knew only the Moderator's part of the story). As the Friend told me afterwards that he scolded her too. Then he came to me, and asked me directly what happened FINALLY! So I told him everything: how I inappropriatedly joked, how Moderator behaved, my feelings, the guilt , the anger, my frustration about how he treats the Friend, and how powerless I feel in this situation, because although I am the cause, yet the Friend is the target of a bullying out of nowhere - and it was indeed a bullying. And the game meant for her so much that she was hurt - very much hurt, and she continued being attacked by people she cared without a possibility to fight back. She was just not that person. And she asked me particualrily not to go into a fight with the Moderator, what I didn't intend regardless, because I already understood that it would makie the cr{{ much worse - this guy just didn't listen and deducted whatever he pleased. The Owner listened to me, apologized and we never talked again. Not sure if any of them apologized to the Friend ever. And although this situation ended here for me, but it didn't end for her. She stayed at that forum - she still had the friends that she invited. She tried to start over the friendly interation with the Moderator, and I am not sure if they did (either she never mentioned or I forgot). However he never stopped nitpicking her in the game. He would create disadvantages to her character, laughing at him, creating almost-death conditions for him (she played a male character). I was sure he intentionally targeted her, and she... well, she was in denial. She kept telling me about the in game encounters with the Moderator, her feelings about that, and I felt guilty. I don't know if she forgave me, this topic slipped us somehow. It was too unpleasant and particularily disgusting to recall the events, and I don't remenber if I properly apologized to her besides my "I'm sorry girl, but he's a piece of (paste here your text)". This guy at that time was 27 and he was a school teacher. We and Friend were 21 or 20 yo. Thank you for your attention (and I address it to everyone who laid their eyes on this wattery piece of text). I appreciate that you made it until the end.

A horror story is kind of developing in the Strahd game I'm in. We were supposed to be 5 players, with a group of Dragonborn Fighter, Elf Oathbreaker Paladin, Human Necromancer, Human Warlock and & Cleric (Exorcist). But that player had to drop out due to scheduling. And now I. The Oathbreaker, who I built to be damaged focused, have to ache and groan every session as the ONLY. SOURCE. OF. HEALING! With the fighter having been a DICK ABOUT IT at least once. I don't wanna be the primary healer of the party, but we really do need a healer and I think I need to talk with the DM of a way to make things easier for me on the battlefield, so I can focus on what I made my character to be fun at doing, rather than hemm and haw at every fight, be it started by the enemy or the boistrous fighter (which almost happened last session)

With story 3, I would have told the game shop owner how the DM also bent the rules to let the incel attack the girl character with no backup, and then let his character RAPE HER CHARACTER!!! NO ONE THAT ALLOWS THAT SHOULD BE DM!!! Ya know, assuming there weren't already a session 0 where everyone said they were ok with it. I know people can be bad with confrontation, but with that and the fact that he said he was "disappointed" in the guys for leaving the game leads me to believe that he actually blamed the girl for ruining the game instead of the incel and the "nice guy". If he were simply bad at confrontation, he wouldn't have been to quick to make it impossible for the other guys to wake up and wouldn't have pulled that BS about being "DiSaPpOiNtEd"! Overall a disgusting display of a lack of care for the girl player. I hope that at the very least, he apologized his BUTT OFF to the gamer girl, then did everything he could to make any future games with her amazingly fun!

I would drop instantly if the DM or any PC is doing SA... WHY IS THAT FUN OR ENTERTAINING?? why does it soud so common...

Enjoy the videos my dude but just from an editing point. Your tavern tips need to not be while you are reading the story. I've noticed with your videos that it's actually harder to watch than just listen to, as there is conflicting text on the screen. Stop for a sec and tell us the tavern tip, explain it and then jump straight back in to the story. Otherwise keep it up!
