I think Lan was asking what she’s hiding because she just got attacked by 3 or 4 fades. That certainly wouldn’t happen for no reason. That’s my take.

The way I interpreted Alana's talk with Egwene is that she *wasn't just* talking about sex & threesomes the first time. That she was planting seeds of a broader more philosophical approach to channeling. Advice that Egwene couldn't just choose to follow even if she wanted to, it's something she needs to come to believe on her own, but the seed still needs to be planted before she can do so. Then the more practical immediate advice serves as another layer of the great game Daes Da'mar.

I don't have anything to add, but I also thought Alanna's talk about threesomes was an allegory for balancing multiple weaves.

One thing not many pick up on is the Cultural differences in each area and even in Aes Sedai, Alanna lounging on the floor is typical Arafel behaviour which is also why Egwene isn't used to it and settles uncomfortably. I feel like Alanna does this on purpose to throw off others as well.

18:30 A fun small detail besides Egwene mirroring Alanna was the way she sort of thumps down and doesn’t quite know what to do with her dress. It’s probably the first time she’s sat on a floor in that way and a nice nod to how comfortable she’ll become :)

I loved it. The first 3 episodes far exceeded my expectations. Mat is going to actually have a reason to really dislike Aes Sedai. I never felt it was terribly justified in the books. I love the Nynaeve Brita filter lesson! Perrin’s wolfy power is far different than the books, but it’s a bit hard to visualize scents so it works for me. The next episodes are shocking, and sad, and really, really good. Different than the source material? Yes. Some improvements? While not all changes may be ideal, I think there are some smart changes. If the bad guys were book bad, this wouldn’t make a great tv series. I’m glad they have some personality, and, wow, I thought I hated the Seanchan before!

#WotBookSpoilers did you pick up the foreshadowing in that "simple" lesson in the kitchen that showed how to combine two opposing powers into a funnel to purify the water? I'm thinking they are setting this up to be a flashback later when Nynaeve thinks back on this for another purifying. I know so many will complain about these new scenes that weren't in the books but I can see they are using them to setup some good payoffs later. Moiraine is fully 100% shielded. Ishy clearly ties off the weave like a knot with his fingers. There is no need if he stilled her. Also with the foreshadowing they are doing I fully believe the point of Siuan untying knots with the One Power for her dad was to setup her untying knots that she can't see that Ishy made for Moiraine's shield. Rand unties women's knots that he can't see either by feel later on so I think this fits in cannon. I loved being able to binge the first 3 episodes but now the Longing until Episode 4 drops!

Ooh, really good points that I hadn't thought about. I agree that I think Ishy shielded Moiraine and tied it off (I personally think he'd do it with the True Power, but I'm not so sure the show is ready to bring that into the show just yet).

I suspect Verin's "vagueness" is a mask she puts on around most people. In these scenes she is with the other brown sister and Moiraine. I am unclear if the other brown is her sibling but they are close enough that Verin lives with her and is working on a history project with. With Moiraine she is trying to get into her confidence so looking like an airhead would be counterproductive. Around 'stranger's and other sisters she may well be the distracted academic we have come to love.

I acknowledge that things are changed. And I've read the books between 15-20 times over the years/stopped counting. But to be honest, anyone who expected the adaptation of the current longest work of fiction in the English language of all time to happen without major changes was just being unrealistic in the extreme. I like the fact that we're getting milestone scenes that help us reconnect with the book plots. I love the fact that characters and abilities are being conflated. (Wolfbrothers and Sniffers are the same in the Show, and suddenly Perrin's story can be more than brooding in the woods about wolves and running around with Faile.). I have fallen in and out of love with Jordan's writing multiple times in my life. I'm okay with it again and the show is the reason why. I embrace this unfolding experience of what Wheel of Time might have been like had someone ever truly Edited Jordan's writing. (No, I don't consider his wife's efforts in that regard very highly. Sorry. Shittiest editor I've seen, actually. Tons of consistency errors just slipped right on by. Not even his publisher seemed to care. No one needs to write 14 million words to tell a good story. Whups. Falling out of love with Jordan again. LOL. j/k) But then again, to be perfectly honest, 30 years later, if I do read any of the books nowadays, I skip right to Book 4 and start there. Because Books I-III clunk worse for me than The Slog does. But that's me. Friends watching with me asked how close things were to the books and I honestly had to say, "The first three books just kind of blur in my mind. Book 4 is when the story begins and the prologue is over for me." So at least we were all riveted to the show because none of us knew what was coming next! LOL And I'm HERE for it!

Interesting take. I've read the books multiple times since 1996 books 1 to 3 were my favorite. Things started to slow down from 4 5 and on. Not to mention the repeated "crossing arms under breast". My biggest disappointment was Padan Fain not having a bigger role at the end. Also every single women was moody and had attitude really off-putting. The list goes on. Only min was likeable. I've since put away the books for good.

@@eds464 non book reader here...this is the first time I've heard of "crossing arms under breasts" being a frequent thing that is mentioned...yikes... Like yeah, that's how people with breasts cross their arms but you REALLY don't need to mention it more than once IMO. Writers usually will just say that the character crosses their arms... They don't feel the need to mention the characters breasts in that much detail... It gives off r/menwritingwomen vibes...which sucks to hear about.

@@AnxietyRat so I want to clarify a little. The "crossing arms under the breast" is an example of repetitive details ( one of many examples) that were littered throughout the book. A lot of which serves no purpose to advance the main story line. I don't want to give the impression of the r/menwritingwomen vibes. In fact the society is matriarchal- the women hold a good portion of power. Again the book could have "trimmed down the fat" significantly in terms of storytelling and thereby reducing the number of books.

What they have done is an incredible blend between book2&3. They switched and shuffled things around but it still carries the feel of the Wheel of Time. I love and hate Liandrin at the same time. Really like how her character is coming along. Most difficult to watch was Moiraine and Lan. But I do understand why Moiraine is acting that way. Loved the way she stabbed that Fade with a dagger. I was hoping for clarity on Moiraine’s ability to channel. They keep skirting around the edges and not telling us. If she is shielded either Siuan will help untie the knot or Ishy will “die” in the last episode and the shield will drop. If she is stilled , probably Nynaeve’s ability to heal stilling will be put forward sooner and heal Moiraine. I haven’t had big wishes so this season and in general but I do want to see Moiraine hurling bailfire… Looking forward for your ep2&3 comments. Happy Wheel of Time Day! :)

I know that they cannot make the books as a one to one, but you are RIGHT. The connective tissue of the overall story is there...and they are making SMART decision when they DO make these changes. My wife and I didn't like certain pacing issues and felt that the music was a bit too up front during scenes. We think it should support the scene, and not overpower the scene. For US it was too much in the way, and distracted from what we should be concentrating on. We love this cast. They are on a good path for the show. Sad about what happened in production in S1. I agree that replacing Vandene seems fine. But putting Verin ther undoes the most important part of her story. BOOK SPOILERS: Verin was supposed to have spent YEARS compiling her list of confirmed Black Ajah. If she's been in retreat for some long number of years, then how could she have done that? I suppose they could say she had already done much of it before retirement and now just has to update for recent Aes Sedai once she returns to The Tower, but that seems a bit abbreviated to me. I think I'll still like what they do, I just hope it lands.

I saw someone mention above that the shield could have been made with the True Source and not the One Power, also Saidin shielding may not feel like female > female shielding which in the books you often are told they can sense and pick apart. In the books there's varying descriptions of shielding that also depend on the power of the individuals, like how Rand can shield multiple people, and some people have trouble maintaining even 1 shield. Oevrall though I think the "stilling" healing arch will involve Moiraine as well and we may not see the Aelfinn arch in this adaptation. Who knows though!

I feel the show is allowing the audience a tiny hope for Moiraine. They did not shy away from the word 'Stilling' in S1, and yet they never mention it now, just replaced by 'cut off'. And yes, why would they show a shielded Nynaeve in the exact hand quivering pose as Moiraine? Book Canon says the warder bond is broken by stilling, but here still bonded like a sliver of Power is maintaining the bond. -Fast theory: Moiraine gets the Nynaeve hug, not Siuan, for whom I fear the worst is to come.-

I wonder how many non-readers are going to catch that? "Just a talk" was also a lie, but one someone miiiight be able to rationalize as Aes Sedai trickery. But "not a word of Mat Cauthon" when literally the next line of the letter was about Mat? (And does MAT know Rand is supposed to be dead? Did he notice Rand being grouped with Laila in the letter? Does he think he himself is the one being omitted? How much has Leandrin gotten in his head? Or does he know she's messing with him and believe Perrin and Nynaeve wouldn't forget him?) Also, I think Alanna was trolling Egwene with the sex talk - deliberately misinterpreting the question. She wants Egwene to loosen up, remember? 😆

First impression taking in all 3 episodes at once is... it was *soooo goooood!!* It's not hyperbole to say I laughed, I cried, I got so hyped. I think the trolloc at the darkfriend social conveyed really well what the books so often described as the "all too human eyes" on every Trollocs face; that they are... were people under all the twisted animal amalgams. So far I'm able to go with the changes for the adaptation. Verin & Adeleas. Elyas taking Hurin's place was an obvious change to make. Hurin disappeares until a few brief moments at the very end & his ability is already replaced by those of a wolfbrother in the books. Portal stones, the mystery that's left open ended by design of old abilities returning or the wheel spinning new abilities. That's exactly the kind of thing that only distracts from the much more direct storytelling form that film is as compared to literature.

Just finished watching the first 3 episodes, definitely a much better show so far than season 1 (was just meh to me - was glad to see it on screen but, meh). Episode 3 is just as much of a doozie as we all new it was gonna be! Matt and Perrin are my two favorite from the books (Perrin because he's most like me, Matt because he just stumbles into amazing hi-jinks), so I'm glad we're getting more into them. A lot of the changes this season feel better than last season. After book 1 the amount of characters just explodes, and wouldn't work on screen, so I'm fairly OK with the changes they've made so far. Off the cuff thoughts on Ep 1: - Verin is great, love her - New Matt is good too, sad to see they had to swap actors, but he does a great job - brings the charisma and sass that's needed for Matt. - So glad they went into more detail on weaves, season 1 basically it was all just "magic" but now it's much more laid out properly. - Love Elyas' look, not what I had always pictured in my mind, but looks cool. Glad he's in there, Perrin getting some love this season, bring on the wolf! - Love that they showed of the Fades' power this season; first season they just sorta came off as creepy commanders and nothing special. The fight with Moiraine/Lan was a good show of what they can do. SPOILER-Y thoughts ahead: - Moiraine definitely pissing me off (I think they might be trying to accelerate towards Nyneave bonding Lan?) - The first Liandrin/Matt scene - I payed particularly close attention to her phrasing of the "misread" letter - in particular what she says right after: "A dozen letters and not a single mention of Matt Cauthon". My interpretation - she didn't just "leave a few lines out", she flat out lied. Nice breadcrumbs for those in the know, and maybe for first time watchers to pick up on! Moiraine shielded vs stilled - I think she's shielded but doesn't know. I think Ishy shielded her with the True Power and tied it off. Since "some weaves are only possible with the True Power" - and we all know Ishy loves to use the True Power over the One Power - I could see the showrunners taking a little liberty and say that this shield was also able to block her from realizing it was a shield. Side Note: stilling releases you from the Oaths, yet in (in a later episode) Moiraine says she cannot lie, and Lan just believes her. Are they changing that, or was that an oversight?

I mean in the scene with Mat Liandrin has a point, he did abandon his friends when things got scary, of course they would not necessarily like him any more. If my friends just left in a situation like that I would definitely not want to see them again.

I am not 100% in on how Liandrin is manhandling (heh) Mat, BUT tbf Moiraine DID send word to the red ahja to capture Mat. And Laindrin being Red (let's go with that for now), like most of her ahja she has a less than stellar opinion of men in general. So it COULD be excused? I don't LIKE it, but so far it sort of tracks. Also, the SL dagger is REALLY bad bear news if Mat is still tainted by it so better er on the side of caution? I dunno. Anyway, great start for season 2, love it! 😀

What is your take on the fact that Moraine sees Verin's weaves. We learned earlier that when you're shielded, you don't see weaves anymore (Liandrin and Nyneave scene). Suddenly Moraine sees weaves. Does that mean that Ishy's knot is weakening? Or what are your thoughts?

I'm not sure what you mean about when you're shielded you don't see weaves -- like, in the Liandrin/Nynaeve scene, when Nynaeve is angry, she can see the weaves Liandrin used, and then Liandrin shields her, but okay, you don't see the shield... but once it's in place maybe it's not visible? Like, I don't think anything in that scene said that shielding stops you from seeing the weaves. But maybe? That's just not how I saw it. Moiriane seeing Verin's weaves to me is just confirmation that she's shielded not stilled.

@@LezbiNerdy I have to rewatch as I imagined seeing things that others saw differently. But I remember that we see Liandrin starting to channel something and in the blink of an eye, all weaves are gone, but I thought Nyneave was still held against the wall. But I have to double-check. I thought it was a great scene to show us viewers the rules. Maybe I was mistaken. At least this scene made me really confused when Moraine suddenly saw some weaves.

As someone who has read the series multiple times, I enjoyed the first episode. Wasn’t anything amazing, but I enjoyed the hour long episode. I absolutely detested how the first season concluded, didn’t like it overall either. But it did make me accept the fact that the adaptation will not be anything close to the books. Just parts here and there and I’m ok with that, mostly because my fiancé loves the show (and she really enjoyed the first episode) and she’s never read the books. Just a shame that my favorite fantasy series will never be fully realized in this medium. All I want and ask of them now is for them to recreate Dumai Wells and do it justice. They do that they can do whatever they want with the rest of the story lol.
