Wheel Of Fortune pilot Shopper´s Bazaar 1973
Ойын-сауық
wheeloffortunehistory.wikia.co...
The first pilot, taped in September 1973, put more emphasis on shopping for prizes at the behest of NBC boss Lin Bolen, who had commissioned the pilot to boost network daytime ratings among women 18-34. With Chuck Woolery as host and Mike Lawrence as announcer, the show had contestants (all female) who solved Hangman-style puzzles, but their winnings were determined by a vertical mechanical Wheel stopped by Woolery.

OpticalJW yeah, pointless pilot
I love how they're just lounging in chairs. The boards were so cute!
That lady screaming is hysterical. Like damn, calm down honey. Also, when the wheel stops and then starts back up while it’s still on camera
KZread, you’ve finally recommended something wholesome yet deafening.

*Wheel isn't spinning* 'It's your turn to stop the wheel!' 'Stop!' *Wheel starts spinning* And it took taping an entire episode to figure out how stupid that part was?
This is so damn relaxing to watch and listen to. Such a relaxing environment, contestants were so relaxed and hip.

I actually like the idea of earning chosen prizes throughout the game. With a different format I think this concept could fly.

So glad they improved this show
The music would make you think the grand prize was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
The wheel clicking whenever it stops is so satisfying.
"Do you want to buy a vowel? Maybe you should buy a vowel. I think you should probably buy a vowel. You know you can buy a vowel, right? SOMEBODY PLEASE BUY A VOWEL."
I like how that first woman naturally said "spin the wheel".
The lady lands on “lose a turn” and Chuck Woolery laughs. Lol
This different format and vibe is so surreal to watch now! And lol at how ridiculously excited the contestants are! Thank you for uploading this!
It's so appropriate that they are playing _Spinning Wheel_ by Blood, Sweat, and Tears.

They play "Spinning Wheel" as a commercial bumper, and the closing credits play "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." It's so interesting that this original show didn't have a model in front of the puzzle board turning letters. The puzzle board looks like cardboard, similar to the original Jeopardy.

When she said, “ stop!” I was thinking wheel would stop 🛑 immediately?! 😐
I love this its so chaotic and raw .
Love the loud enthusiasm. The audience clapping I think is a track. When people tell her to keeping going or stop, I only hear a few voices really close and when the ladies shout, it doesn't sound like a huge area like the screams are bouncing off the walls that are close.
Background music is "Spinning Wheel" by David Clayton Thomas.
somehow the weirdest part is still the chitty chitty bang bang theme
That has to be the most bizarre game show music ever made...
The fact that they sometimes end up saying "spin the wheel" is what predicted the later years.
It's interesting that Chuck was the host of this original 1973 pilot and Susan Stafford was the hostess of the two 1974 pilots with Edd Byrnes. It's also interesting that vowels have always and continues to be worth $250.
Wheel of Fortune should've kept the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang theme song. "Wheeel...of....FORTUNE! Bang, bang, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang...."
These women are going in hysterics every other time they stop the wheel. Hard to believe the show wasn't picked up right away...

@@Santiaram ...I am very aware of that. It was a joke. Wordplay, because "bazaar" sounds like "bizarre", which means strange, and this version of Wheel of Fortune is very different, which can be seen as strange.
I just love old episodes or old "versions" of shows, like this one. We get to see a piece of culture from the day as well as learn a bit of TV history. I find it interesting that they use the same font on the puzzleboard as today. The upright wheel looks funny and when the ladies say "Stop the wheel," I keep expecting them to say "No whammies!" XD Thank you for posting. This is a nice clear recording with excellent sound. :)
@daffers2345

OK, it seems I can't edit. However ... I realized the font isn't the same but is similar with large serifs. I also find it interesting that they have a clue wedge and used the phone to give a clue privately to one of the contestants - it reminds me of the phone-a-friend from Millionaire. Such a neat episode to see!
Haha...so weird hearing Blood, Sweat and Tear's 'Spinning Wheel' used! Fitting and yet odd at the same time.
The smallest font in game show history.
Three women constantly screaming 😳
8:57 - What it's like to for the wheel to stop on "Lose a Turn"!
I don’t even know where to start with this. The poor sound guy having to listen to these women screaming.
this is wild, I remember Chuck woolery and this version of the show.
Anyone else notice the final round thinking music sounds a little familiar?
i like how the wheel constantly spins; and the contestants stop it.

I'm pretty sure it was at the beginning and ending. In between, when Chuck comes on stage, the song is, "Spinning Wheel", by Blood, Sweat & Tears.
Wow this is fascinating to watch....I believe that at the time this might have aired ONLY on O&O NBC stations daytime. I think I saw this pilot during the daytime on WMAQ TV in Chicago way back in 1973 as a child. Amazingly this episode holds up well. It kept my attention!
12:20 “Quickly, or we’ll be into Search For Tomorrow”...which was still on CBS at the time (didn’t move to NBC until 1982)!

Even with all the bugs, this wasn't half bad. The setup made it look way more intimate, which isn't a bad thing. Remove the audience and it becomes one helluva edge on other game shows of that time. For those of you saying this looked like 'Press Your Luck', you need to realize this show was done like 4 years before the original iteration 'Second Chance' and 10 years before 'Press Your Luck' came on the air. So maybe it's the other way around?
Wow... It's a good thing Merv Griffin ironed out all the kinks!

And then they played Spinnin' Wheel by Blood, Sweat and Tears
In 1973 the wheel doubled as a kitchen knife sharpener for the take home prizes.
The countdown music played during the "Shopper's Special" segment of this pilot, SHOPPER'S BAZAAR, was the same music that was sometimes played during Charlie O'Donnell's or Jack Clark's prize descriptions on WHEEL OF FORTUNE after a contestant went shopping for prizes following his/her win of a round. On this SHOPPER'S BAZAAR video, that version of the music (perhaps written by Merv Griffin) was more playful. On WHEEL when this music was played, it was played at a different pitch and was a bit somber but had a triumphant finale if it got that far.
We’ve come a long way..
the first contestant's name was Marilyn.. at the end of the show, the announcer called her Maureen.. which was the 3rd contestant's name.
You would think they'd have the players use a button instead of saying stop.

Yes, that's correct. The early years of the "current" wheel had this. It was called the "showcase" if I'm not mistaken. You had to spend your winnings on prizes from there and if there were an amount left that was insufficient to buy anything from the showcase, you received a gift certificate. You didn't take home cash winnings, like they do today. That came later on.
@blindsportslover

@@RogerBates7 Right. That originally started in 1987 when they a "week of cash" that quickly became the permanent format. The daytime version didn't go all cash until it went to CBS in 1989 (with Bob Goen taking over from Rolf Benirshke, who replaced Pat Sajak on the daytime version) and had much lower cash amounts.

it's wild how, other than the bonus round in the late 70s, Jeopardy has really only had one major rule change to the actual gameplay in 60 years (locking the buzzers until after the clue's been read starting in Trebek season 2; the only other changes are removing the five-day limit and doing tiebreakers in regular play), while Wheel of Fortune is almost unrecognizable from one decade to the next
The second puzzle was obviously clam chowder.
