The MOST crystallization ive seen is on def pumps! The nozzles are always covered in crystals. Had a pump in a shop I worked at too, same story, pumps get nasty.

We use the additive in our big trucks box trucks and day cabs, but we’re in northern Mi. It reduces the moisture in the fuel. It helps especially if it does get very cold, below zero. If you’ve ever gelled up in those temps, trust me you will do the preventative measures.

I use Def from truck stops and from the box. Zero issues from either. Never used any additives. 2017 L5P Denali from NePa.

I have been using the Blu def platinum in my truck for 6 months. I started using this because of the before and after videos that I was seeing. Don’t know if it’s worth it or not. I am super picky on the manufacturing dates on the box but as you said during shipping the jugs could be exposed to a harmful environment such as sunlight. I was considering using the truck stop def since I get all my diesel fuel from only truck stops I just couldn’t make up my mind. So I went with the platinum. As far as fuel additive I have always used a fuel supplement in all my diesel trucks and on my current truck I have used Hot Shots Secret on my current truck since it was new and I love it.

Bad ass truck. The Antifreeze additive does cause gelling. Work at a TA truck stop in Tennessee and we stopped using that additive because it would gel up the fuel pump filters.

I have heard so many different opinions. Since brand new, my 2020 GMC 3500HD DENALI DUALLY has only seen Schaeffers 15w40 oil every 5k miles and every fill up Schaeffers fuel additive. Unfortunately it still has emissions intact also, and I have yet to have one single problem. And I use regular peak blue def in a jug. Good products gives good results, I am a firm believer in Schaeffers products.

T6 5w-40 for me during the cold weather season(s). Use Howes diesel treat every fill and hot shots extreme every 6k miles. I’ve only gelled up once in 20 years because of crappy blended fuel that I didn’t treat. My current gen 4 Cummins was deleted immediately and will never run emissions again.

Regarding the def, we had issue with our fire apparatus before we started using the box jugs. From what I understand and this could be wrong or incomplete, the def oxidizes which is what causes the crystallization. That said station def is not necessarily more safe than box def. I could be of the station is busy and they r going through a lot of it. That being said ever since we went from 55 gal rims to box def no issues. And that includes ambulance engines which are power strokes and merc diesels.

Careful on the cetane info. Cetane isn't fuel lubricity, it is a measure of how well the fuel burns in the combustion chamber. It is similar to octane in gasoline.

Cetane is the the octane rating of diesel fuel. Higher Cetane = more complete combustion, better mpg, power, smoother idling, and less soot (potentially less regens or shorter regens) . Most additives increase cetane and also have extra lubricity to make up for our ultra low surfer diesel fuel. I think there is an advantage to running a good additive too. I run archoil AR6500.They have AR6300 formula for winter.

Were you running, off-road diesel southern states in my area only carries diesel for tractors it’s a red dye fuel. One thing you do not want is getting caught running off road diesel in your truck. They probably don’t check small pick up trucks but I’ve heard where the DOT will actually take a sample of your fuel to make sure that it’s not off-road usually the truckers hauling cattle, etc. they’re the ones that tend to put that type of fuel in your vehicle. Trying to avoid the fuel tax. Also, I’ve been using Arch Oil in my 3 Power Stroke diesels for a combined 250,000 miles with no issues with a CP4 pump. So it must be pretty good at lubricating the fuel system.

I’ve never heard the box def is not as good, but it kind of makes sense that it may sit longer. I certainly encourage my drivers to use at the pump, but we always carry a jug. I can’t say we’ve had any problems but our sensors don’t work anymore in the tank. It does get built up on things

Gm tells you to run an additive if you are not filling with top tier fuels. I have been running Hot Shots EDT or Winter EDT at every fill-up. I have noticed a difference when I forget to add it. My 2024 on has 4500 miles. The engine is quieter and slightly better mpg but nothing crazy.

I can't comment on the fuel additives, but your concern with the DEF in a jug is largely unfounded. *SPECIALLY* if you get it straight from GM. Their lawyers aren't going to let them bottle up something and sell it to their own diesel truck driving customers that could potentially munge up the works. Companies get sued for doing stupid shit like that, and GM well knows it. Now, whether the fluid sitting outside did or didn't crystalize, that's on a case-by-case basis, of course. But if you roll into a dealer and pick up a jug of DEF, you're fine using it. It's not going to hurt your truck. That said, since you have the convenience of local DEF pumps (not everyone does around the US), use them if you can! That's just awesome.

your def sitting in the trucks tank is no different then sitting in the jugs. The heater is only on when the truck running. unless you leave that jug in the sunlight for months its fine. I just keep it in the house in the winter. The hot shots every day is for every fill up and has the cetane booster in it. the extreme is for every 6000 miles.

That’s what they are trying to accomplish with the Blu Def Platinum. I spend the extra money and buy it but I will say that you have to be careful because of the additional cost it does tend to sit on the shelf longer so you have to keep an eye on the box dates.

Hey JB. Love the content. Number one diesel is used primarily for off road vehicles or non power units, ie reefer trailers, pony motors, construction equip. Number one diesel is also dyed red as number two diesel is green. Thats so when the D O T inspectors wanna check the fuel in commercial trucks, they can tell which is being used. Red dye or number one diesel is tax free and green or number two diesel is taxed. The FMCSR frowns upon using red dye (number one) diesel for on highway power units that are operating for hire. Hope this helps.

@@interpinto The MAIN point of a diesel fuel additive is to lubricate the high pressure fuel pump, not the pistons or anything else. The cetane rating increase allows the fuel to be more completely burned so less soot is produced and sent into the EGR than back into your engine for reburn. It also lessens the load on your DPF because there is less soot produced so you will have less regens and save fuel. It also has cleaners to help keep the fuel injectors clean AND emulsifiers to break down any water molecules that may accumulate in your fuel and cause pump problems. I use Hot Shot Everyday Day Diesel with every single fill up and noticed my regens are way less and my fuel economy is way better. I could say the higher cetane gives me better performance but it’s difficult to argue with the 500 hp and 1200 torque my f350 high output diesel Tremor already produces. Every single Hot Shot product is completely compatible with each other and can be used when needed. If you are running the normal Everyday Diesel product but then the weather gets freezing you can add their antigel and don’t have to worry about putting too much in or wait till your tank needs to be filled then do it. You just add it when you need it. But running a high quality diesel fuel additive is a MUST with the low sulphuric content in today’s diesel fuel, and I mean EVERY FILL UP and not that ghetto garbage he has. Also filing his def tank at a truck stop is the MOST ridiculous thing I have heard to avoid crystallization, the DEF they sell at truck stops is again the cheapest ghetto junk on the market. I use only Peak Blue DEF Platinum because it practically eliminates crystallization and keep the tank clean and the dpf injector clean and the scr operating efficiently. This is a great example of just because you may own a diesel doesn’t mean you understand or know about them or how to properly maintain one. I would even venture to dare say he is either running a conventional oil or better yet he THINKS he thinks he running a full synthetic oil because it may say it on the bottle, but has no idea that only Amsoil is the ONLY 100 percent true synthetic oil. By law an oil only has to be 25 percent synthetic to allow them to put “fully synthetic “ on the label and that is what ALL other manufacturers due, the label will say either synthetic blend or fully synthetic but it’s NOT fully synthetic ! HOPE THIS HELPED.
