What you need to know to become a language tutor

Answering another question this week: how to get started in language tutoring! I discuss lesson ideas, tips on finding students, and my experiences as a language tutor. Also, sorry for any weird background noises. Not even joking, there are literally noisy bullfrogs outside my window that like to croak when it rains.

Great points. I've been teaching in schools for a decade and online for about 2 years. With respect to managing expectations, I think it is important to discuss who you are as a teacher and how that matches your student's needs and preferences. I tend to have a super conversational class and I think it really important that students learn the writing system of a language. One of the languages I teach is Japanese, so a lot of students may not want to learn how to read and write and some students may want to spend more time with grammar. If you can adjust as a teacher or they can adjust as a student, fine, but if not I think it is better to let them find a teacher that is a better fit.

Being a polyglot myself (7 languages - 6 if i don't include Spanish, which i've been getting a bit rusty at), i am secretly waiting for the day you'll learn Swedish (not saying that learning a language is a sort of enternainment towards other people, absolutely not, this is just a secret wish i have ahah) so we can "share" ressources and content ~ Merci pour tout Lindie :) Des bisous de Lyon !

One thing I wonder is how can you assess accurately the level of somebody trying to learn your native language since you never studied it "as a second language". Do you look at commonly used language textbook to see what is taught at A1/A2/B1/... level?

"The myth of the native speaker" right there. That's why it's important to have a degree to tutor in your native language. The vast majority of people are not able to teach their native language, because they have no clue what vocabulary, verbal tenses, etc a A2.2 student should be learning. The only way to know what a A1 or a B2 in your native language is, is by doing the very first step any language tutor should do: get to know your textbooks, study them and learn them by heart.

I have a Korean friend here in Australia who has a friend (who is also Korean) who wants me to help her improve her English. I have met the lady a couple of times and I think her English is basically functional; she speaks English about as well as I speak Spanish, which is to say she can hold a very concrete conversation as long as it doesn't get too technical or too abstract. I'm a native English speaker and I know enough about language learning to know how much I don't know about learning English. I have learned Spanish to high intermediate level and Korean to low intermediate level, and I'd guess the lady is moving towards advanced level and I'm not sure what is best for her learning at that level since I've not had that experience. My best guess is to maybe just talk with her on topics she wants to talk about and give her feedback on how she can improve her grammar and pronunciation (although I've never successfully been able to help my Korean friends with the pronunciation of "w") and particularly help her understand and practice using idiomatic expressions. I'd welcome ideas and tips from you or anyone reading this.

But I only so far got my A1 Goethe Certificate as a proof of my German language ability, I have no proof of my English besides my birth certificate (Australian born 😅) (I've been researching about a TEFL/TESOL? It does seem to interest me a fair bit, but still don't know really about it and tutoring/teaching in General, also being rather shy (I can easily warm up to people though, so that is a good thing, I can push myself out of that shyness) and not so confident in myself tends to get in a way a little... But I also think beginning something new (as this is for me, a little, I mean I attempted to teach German to my ex-boyfriend (whilst I was self-teaching myself at the time) and now teaching my Husband (he's German 🥰) English, more so the grammar aspect of English.

@@banabana4574 Of course! I'd love to learn more Chinese 🤗, but I can't even say more than "hello" at the moment hahah. Trying to learn the rules about pinyin and the sounds has me very confused. I'd prefer to not even learn the pinyin and just learn the characters and sounds from that but I've only been teaching myself up to this point so I'm learning very slowly 😅

Bonjour Lindie, I have been familiarizing myself with Korean language and starter learning it about 2 months ago. Because of the Covid, I can't go in stores to shop for an activity book that would help me learn more about sentence structure, grammar,... And since shopping online doesn't allow to look inside the book at the activities proposed, I was wondering if you had a learning book, or series that you found more helpful compared others? It can be in english ou en français. Merci beaucoup pour ton temps, et j'adore tes videos.
