Long story short, replace the bar soap with a cheap detergent rather than using a bar soap. Then you will have detergent and no problems even castille soap is still soap and should be avoided.

Her explanation is thorough and fair from start to finish. Some people just easily get defensive if anyone says homemade laundry SOAP might not be working. These defensive people think because their homemade laundry soap works it instantly makes them chemistry expert.. 😔

This makes so much sense, but dang people are so hardheaded about “making” their own laundry soap, yes it’s soap, not detergent! I cringe when I see people say they put it into cold water, I love when they strip their clothes to acknowledge the buildup!

I used to add a box of White King WATER CONDITIONER....not fabric softener, water softener..... Or, Calgon, if I could find it. It works beautifully with the addition on the WATER SOFTENER..... It is found in the laundry aisle. Vinegar rinses.

put vinegar in your rinse aid dispenser which removes all the soap and surfactants while leaving a very fresh scent (not vinegary).

You can use a chelator to soften the water like EDTA. Or make your own: 10 gram citric acid with 6 gram NaOH in 1 liter water. Pour a cup for every wash

About time! Somebody was around Grandma! Lol…and paid attention YOU HAVE TO USE VINEGAR ALSO CAN DO THIS ONCE A MONTH RUN WASHER WITH VINEGAR ALONE TO CLEAN WASHER!

The newer tik tok versions are adding in cheap detergents ( foca, Ariel) plus oxiclean, which is a way to get more mileage out of cheaper detergents by adding laundry boosters. They also now ( correctly) say to use 2 tbsp which would naturally extend how long your detergent lasts.

Thank you for approaching this with a scientific mind. So many are stuck in their ways and want "no chemicals" when they don't understand that even water is a chemical. I want to spend less on detergent while also preserving the life of my he washer. Thank you!

I never heard of adding these bar soaps until recently. I thought that's strange bc soap had fats and oils but detergent doesn't. They each serve a different purpose.

Soaps are made from fats and oils. They don’t contain them.

Add a surfactant like food safe polysorbate 80, 20 ml per 5 gallons of washing soap. Store bought detergents work as surfactants with soap more efficiently.

Do you have a recipe that will not be clogging to the washing machine? I want to make a liquid version bec I do find any powder ,home made or store bought, lumps in the dispenser drawer. I end up putting the powder in the machine tub and turn on the machine to get water and swishing to get bubbles, then add my clothes.

I grate 2 bars of kirks castile soap, 1 cup muleteam borax, 1 cup super washing soda, 1/2 cup oxyclean, 30 ml polysorbate 20 or 80, 30 drops of essential oil. Into a 5 gallon bucket and fill with hot water. Let sit for a day or two. @@CC-lv1ox

6 parts sodium carbonate 6 parts sodium bicarbonate 2 parts epsom salts 1 part sea salt. Essential oils just for scent I use 1-2 tbsp per load depending on size/soil

I have hard water and homemade works fine for me. Borax is in mine and it is a Water softener. I have read to increase it by a third to soften water. I think I will make a batch and test the water before and after. I have a phone monitor for my fish tanks.

I don’t put borax in it. Baking soda baked in the oven for an hour, I grade lavender Castile soap in it. Then I put a drop of lemon oil in the washer when I do the laundry.

If you have hard water add episom salts as water softener to help the surfactants work or have a in house softener. if you have a soap based laundry detergent it has saponin and needs friction to work and w ill leave a scum in fabric and in machine tubes and hoses. If you use a detergent (surfactant) Focca or dawn and you will have better cleaning and no scum. Dial is interesting because it is detergent based and has an antibacterial qualities. I had never considered dial.

Plus epsom salt adds magnesium it hardens your water

Because epsom salt is Magnesium Sulfate. Totally different from Sodium Sulfate (general salt) or Sodium Chloride (table salt). If added to the water, epsom salt dilutes the magnesium into the water, makes the water harder.

If you are adding any amount of salt to your recipe; check your PH. It might be lowering the PH too much. A PH of 7-10 is ideal for laundry detergents. The higher PH, the easier on the clothes.

For the first time in my life (and I’m a nurse 🤦🏻‍♀️) I’m going to say I disagree with the “science.” I only got into making my own laundry soap because when I moved to Alaska our water was so hard that it kept turning my light clothes orange and turned our shower brass color. I literally had to clean everything with barkeepers friend and as soon as I started making a powder version of diy soap I FINALLY was able to keep my clothes white after I did a load using “white out” and then the diy soap kept it from turning brass orange. This is interesting but experience, it works great with hard water. Also, we had a white drum in our washing machine, it stayed white verses when we first moved there and it started getting orange.

Not harmful, just not getting it clean because it's missing a few key things that actual detergents use. The ingredients are basically types of soap, not detergents, which can be different. :)

I am perplexed about this as well. LOVE this video because I wanted to know WHY certain products were used and what was the reasoning, not just, "hey I mixed all these things together and now my clothes are great,". I knew that using the bar soap wouldn't work. Why wouldn't using FOCA and washing soda or baking soda work? This is one I saw. FOCA being the main detergent, washing soda helping it work better and quite frankly I'm not sure about the baking soda other than it cleaning well. I am watching your video again and reading your blog post. I SO appreciate the time you took to put this research out there. We have HARD water here.

Homemade laundry detergent is made with a laundry bar soap like Zote which is made up of only a few ingredients and basically a laundry booster powder like Oxy Clean or Borax which all are made for doing laundry.i have hand washed with Zote and Zote home made detergent in the washer and no problems with getting laundry clean even in our hard water. Commercial detergent has tons of chemicals and are way to concentrated plus some like Gain are all smell. Commercially made detergent are all about brands and scent and are basically all made with similar ingredients so no. I'll never go back to using commercial detergent. Huge waste of money.

You obviously didn't read the ingredients of Zote, lol. Borax is just washing soda, but real soap, like zote, doesn't belong in agitation washing machines (any electric washing machine) Zote works if you hand wash, because of Friction... agitation is not the same as Friction by hand and a wash board. But good luck with voiding your warranty on your Washing machine.

@Dolores Leyva Zote bars are not the same as OxyClean. Oxy powders, or the brand-name OxiClean are Sodium Percarbonate in combination of surfactants, and polymers. It is an oxygen or peroxide releasing bleach. Zote is Sodium Tallowate (Beef Fat), Sodium Cocoate, Citronella Oils, Glycerin, and Optical Brighteners. These are all common ingredients any of true bar soaps, save for the brighteners: chemically they are Anionic Diamino Stilbene (DAS) and/or Distyryl Biphenyl (DSBP). The two products actually have NOTHING in common from a chemistry perspective. You have good results and luck with your hand washing in Zote due to friction, and plenty of rinse water in relation to the soap suds you are using. Under the ideal circumstances, you are still leaving behind soap scum residue and mineral deposits.

From what I understand, hard water is water with excess minerals in it. The minerals can be extremely irritating, even toxic. (Our city tap water is a nightmare, but within legal limits! Get your water tested, and know what to look for.) Your cleaning agents can't work properly because they can't move about in the clogged-up water so the fabric literally gets clogged up as well. The weaves and knits are filled with a combination of minerals and soap, or detergent, if your water is as bad as ours. "You can wash out a pair of jeans and they'll stand up on their own," here, I was told after we bought the house. Water softener, filters? Research your water, ask your - healthy - neighbors what they do in your area. Better yet, do your homework on the water before you buy the house. ❤🙏❤🙏❤ Beth

Well this sucks😢. I love that you are helping us in making good decisions for our machines among other things but pretty much everything is canceled out of the diy detergents.🤕 What do we do now? I feel like there is no option but store bought supposedly eco brands.😐 I mean unless u have a diy laundry detergent recipe that won't damage our machine or leave our clothes severely dirty? 🥺 your pretty much our last hope

I use 100% coconut soap with zero fat, with borox and washing soda. I make my own 100% coconut soap because it is a surfactant and doesn't leave soap scum. They are also sell 100% coconut soap online..

companies approach prominent or moderately prominent KZreadrs and pay them off to change the narrative to promote their products.

So maybe homemade plus some vinegar in rinse?

Hard water can be really tricky to wash clothes in. It just doesn't allow soap to work as it does in water without calcium and minerals. I personally have had a really hard time using homemade detergent with hard water and it's why I swapped to store bought. Honestly, if you can swing getting a softener system for your water I think that's the absolute BEST solution.

Everything is a chemical, but wool dryer balls with a couple of drops of essential oils should do the trick.

The first step to take is to keep your body clean and the amount of clothes you have to a minimum to avoid doing so much laundry.

She states that when you strip laundry it's stripping all the dirt and built up detergent but don't you use almost the same ingredients to strip laundry? That just doesn't even add up. Also if I remember correctly some of the ingrediants in homade detergent help break down hard water.

You never made a DIY detergent if you used bar soap as the only surfactant. Your concoction never contained detergents. Soap IS a surfactant (not surfacant). Short for surface active agent. Cleaning effectiveness depends on time, temperature, agitation, and concentration of cleaning agents. Soft water falls under concentration. DIY recipes typically call for a huge excess of water softeners, so it’s unlikely that hard water in the wash cycle is responsible for DIY problems. OTOH, it definitely is problematic in the rinse cycle. Vinegar is therefore a necessary evil. Citric acid is another rinse cycle softener, but it hasn’t yet migrated via mommy blogger word of mouth from DIY dishwasher-land. Your explanation of how hard water minerals interfere with soap molecules (not particles) isn’t quite right. Soaps are typically sodium salts of fatty acids. Hard water contaminants like calcium, iron, magnesium and iron displace sodium and effectively link two fatty acids, rendering them insoluble. Soaps are then acting like a water softener by removing those contaminants from solution. The result is scum and a reduced concentration of soap. Salt does nothing. Epsom salt contains magnesium sulfate and should never be used. It reacts instantly with DIY water softeners, a fact that eludes the DIYers. Vinegar is a weak acid. The rubber seal problem is dubious. Seals don’t absorb aqueous substances. Google ‘EWG is not science’. It’s a natural product lobbyist. DIY ‘detergents’ date from the 1600’s and probably before. Today’s recipes aren’t much of an advancement. Mechanization has changed laundry cleaning (no more scrub boards) but DIYers are still using pioneer-days recipes. What a hoot!

Healthy House on the Block I listened to most again and added a few additional remarks. This is good because it doesn’t assume that because DIY recipes are posted, there aren’t caveats. Your points about water quality, agitation and temperature are probably not even considered by most DIY enthusiasts. Also, though I’m not sure about nuances of the chemistry involved, my armchair speculation suggests that modern-day synthetics may pose challenges for soap-based cleaners. You didn’t the mention it, but commercial detergents use enzymes to selectively treat organic contaminants, and also contain soil suspension agents to reduce redeposition of soils. Contrary to DIY beliefs, commercial-detergent-based products rinse more cleanly than soap-based formulations. The release of contaminants you described by stripping supports that belief.
