What you Need to Know about Lab Grown Diamonds & Internal Graining

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Journey with me as we take a close look at CVD (chemical vapor deposition) grown diamonds and the issue of internal graining. Every one I've inspected has it to some degree. In this clip we look both under the microscope as well as with human vision of what this actually looks like and it's impact on diamond optics.

nice video! - My thoughts - Whether natural CVD or HPHT or Moissanite - As long as you get what you've been promised for a fair price, and you understand what you are getting all is good.

10:32 i get what you are saying, but alternatively as someone who ISNT a diamond expert, if i saw either of these by themselves i would probably think they were equally good. Heck if i saw both of these together and the one on the right was slightly cheaper, they are close enough that slightly less good is still great to me. But yes i can absolutely see what you are describing which is surprising giving how much filtering and compression this poor video has gone through on its journey to the youtube big screen. Normally someone says "LOOK see you can see it!" and youtube makes them look indistinguishable.

Jonathan, beyond impressed on your vetting process in particular under the polarized lighting. As a lay person that wouldn’t have crossed my mind to ever look for that concentration of striae in those conditions. I could visually see the difference in scintillation between the 2 diamonds. In this example, do you discard the one and keep the other? I assume most LGs have internal graining but there is an acceptable type or concentration that is tolerable because it doesn’t affect the optics. Out of curiosity, has there ever been an IF clarity CVD or HPHT produced?

Good afternoon Marie. Thank you so much for your comments and questions. The answer is yes. .. I will discard the one that impacts the optics. When a client puts themselves into our care to help them select the best, this particular feature compromises the optics and we eliminate it from their options. And yes ... most LG's do have it as do many mined diamonds as well. The key is *not* having it impact the optics. Also, yep there are IF out there in CVD and HPHT. Jon

CVD, basically they have a base diamond they start with. They heat it up and pressurize it then bath it in basically gaseous diamond materials which then "freeze" onto the base diamond, the atoms automatically aligning themselves with the atoms of the base diamond because they are "freezing" or being deposited one atom at a time. You can actually do this with almost anything that grows crystals including metal and ice. The processes are different obviously but the idea is the same.

Jon thanks for this educational video. How does one mimic "spot lighting" In a home environment to see if the diamond they have already purchased has internal graining? Can you describe the effect differently than just "breaking up the light". One comment below talked about the difference in scintillation which more describes the difference I could see in the two diamonds. Also it would have been helpful if you had held up the one with graining by itself and moved it like you did with the G colored stone. One stone had great scintillation while the other one just had larger flashes that were not turning off and on. I'm just trying to describe the way I was seeing the difference. Thanks for all your great videos! Where on a GCAL report would one be able to see the level of internal graining? At least with GIA mined diamonds they do refer to internal graining...mostly they say "internal graining not shown".
