Thanks for that Andy, as a sax player of only a few months I found your comments so inspiring. I have my first "performance" at my teachers garden party in 2 weeks time, so hearing your story has really inspired me to go for it and enjoy it.

This is a wonderful video that I hope others embrace. I love this simple busking setup. I have used my iPad/iPhone with blue tooth and battery powered speaker….Ion Block rocker plus 100 amp off of Amazon and am now trying a Cool 120 amp as a student is using the older amp. There are so many to choose from nowadays. I also have the option for a traditional music stand or digital iPad stand and pedal version. I use all the play alongs….so many books and tracks that I have acquired over time: Alfred, Hal Leonard, classical music: digital piano accompaniment or electronic music, backing tracks, jazz music minus one, etc. i carry all in my backpack. I have been doing this since Thanksgiving 2015. I have done as much as three hours. I have done concert recitals, parties, memorials, clinics, general busking, and community events of various sizes and venues. This allows me to engage folks better than if I just performed a saxophone solo. Once I plan out what to do I get into my go bags for the music… divided in a Bb bag, C bag, and Eb bag. I get together the set bag and go. I routinely change saxes or goto clarinet for songs. I will sometimes play things transposed from C because it makes this versatile for what I want to do. I remember a guitarist introduced me to a “battery powered” Roland cube and it opened my eyes to “wireless” mobility with the amplifier. The blue tooth is a bonus option as in the old days you still go wired. I still have a 1/4 with 1/8 in adapter chord ready to go as needed. One more thing, with this set up and my venues( size of speaker) there has been no need for a microphone. Playing like this allows you to learn how to play live and gain real experience. You can be a feature or remain in the background. The music can be adapted to all audiences and levels.

The setup described is how I strarted out too...my evolution has added a Mackie Mix8 through which I plug the Cloud Vocal and backing track (via laptop computer). The main outs go into the S1 Pro. Runnig thru a mixer allows more control on volume, mix, EFX, etc. Currently I am a solo saxophonist featured for Sunday Brunches on the outside deck of a Seafood Restaurant in Baltimore, MD, USA. The setup is absolutely perfect for the venue....peace & blessings...🙏🏾

Great little interview. I've been playing a long time and used to play professionally on ships, in bands and tours. But: I have my first proper solo gig tomorrow. Jamming along to pop tracks. Not really my niche, but I've found it's where there are more gigs. More nervous about this than playing on big stages haha 🤞🤞🎷🎷

This was an amazing interview. I really want to play in front of others, but the fear of making mistakes and sounding bad while doing it keep me from pulling the trigger. It's okay to mess up in front of my phone because I can just delete it and do it over. Can't really do that when playing in front of others. It's a fear I need to get over if I'm ever going to play in front of people. Great interview!!!

When you play with mistake, you might inspire others to do so also, and learn that its okay to make them, as long as you get out there and be yourself. Making mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake. If anything you are courageous for trying, and that's not a bad badge to carry!

Another brilliant video Nigel. Well done. Andis story is inspiring. My question is: what is the going rate for a sax gig. I know it’s difficult, depending on standard etc. but what is a resonabke fee for a 90 minute gig, for example?

I play flute so I need an amp! I use a 12v sealed lead-acid battery (7.2Ah size) to drive my receiver) and I have an Alto Uber 100W, so I'm entirely independent of power. It also isolates you from any noise...

So I been making backing tracks on my polyend tracker midi output to my Roland MV-1 groove box, and opening up one verse for the sax solo part of all the popular cover songs. So far I made Free Fallin, After the gold rush, If I were a zombie, and sad lisa. So I sing all the verses and put a additional verse part for the sax second to the last verse. I bought my student Yamaha YAS23 for $300 off Craigslist and the busted Taxi Crate 30 for $30 and replace all the capacitors and new battery for $70 Then I make the track and record it for my fitness class music for them to workout with. at 126 BPM So you can imagine for me to see another sax player was engaging in a fitness class! What a surprise. I been using the midi wind controller to write the midi track to the polyend tracker. Aerophone AE-10 kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zo2nydGOerjPnpM.html this is one of the video I made where I wrote all the backing track with my wind controller onto the Polyend tracker. Including the chords. I didn't yet play the sax part at that time because my sax was undergoing inspection by a pro. But the next video will have the sax part in it.

@@McGillMusicSaxSchool If anyone is like me, only knows how to play the sax, you are limited to making a backing track, but with a midi wind controller I can sketch out the chords with a single note, and then in polyend tracker I can converts the note to a midi chord function. Great practice to play along a band in keeping your timing. The advantage of using a midi sequencer over a loopstation is being able to change tempo and slow it down to learn it, and then speed it up as you get it memorize. The other bonus is side chaining all your parts intro, verse, chorus, and ending in order of the whole song.
