The best soccer this player pool has ever produced was when Berhalter was not running the team for 6 months. When Hudson and BJ were in charge of player selection and tactics. By the way it took them one game to move Gio to the midfield something that Gregg refused to do for years. Completely unqualified

Gio apparently playing the regista role that Gregg has always wished he could implement with Wil Trapp. And Weston looking completely lost. Why must Gregg overthink everything? I truly believe that in order to have TRUE success with the national team you need a domestic coach. No foreign manager has ever won a World Cup, every team had a domestic coach. Jesse March is my pick but SOMEHOW Canada has him and not the US after firing Berhalter over a scandal that got swept under the rug with empty apologies on all sides.

@@johndamario2546 Jesse Marsch was never better than Berhalter when they were both in the MLS. Berhalter was the obvious pick for the coach in 2018 after Marsch refused to be interviewed, and we got the better candidate anyway.

So what you're saying is that you'll only admit you are wrong if Berhalter is such a good coach he can take a roster of players that barely qualifies on paper as like 20th in the world and win a major tournament. If Berhalter can do that, he's not just a good coach; he'd be the best coach in the world. Pretty high standard you are setting.

What did we do in the 10s except blow the 2014 WC with bad coaching, and then collapse as a program between 2015 and 2018. The last good win for the USMNT was like back in 2009.

@Steve-606 he had go rebuild a program that was lacking. No one wanted to play for the usa. He got dual nationals with teeth to play for the team he encouraged players to go to Europe. Without that we wouldn't have this new generation. You imagine an all mls team these days.

For me it's easy. Get the team to play and generate results up to the talent level. I think I'm realistic about what that means. It means that we routinely have comfortable wins against most CONCACAF teams or examples from other regions like Bolivia. And that we get periodic, but not guaranteed wins and/or strong performances against better teams. As a practical example, since we're currently in Copa, it would be beating Panama with comfort in the next game, followed by at least one positive result in either of the following two games versus Uruguay or Colombia/Brazil. That could be a tie versus Uruguay and a close loss to Colombia/Brazil. Or a close loss to Uruguay and an upset win versus Colombia/Brazil. If we were to have any mix of suffering to beat Panama (or worse, lose or tie that game) plus getting beat with relative ease by Uruguay/Colombia/Brazil, then I'd still be of the opinion that he's not getting the best out of what he has available to him.

What do you think our talent level is? We are objectively overachieving our talent level. On paper based on the players we can call up we are about 20th in the world. Back in the last world cup cycle we were on paper about 28th in the world. Why do people think we have some sort of talent to make us a top 10 team in the world if we'd just put it together? We're a young team filled with players with struggling careers that have underperformed for their clubs and collectively lost market value. We've got no players anyone would rank in the top 100 in the world, at best one player that is in the top 25 in their position, no players who are the star on their team, almost no players who are the captain of a major team, and in terms of minutes earned for big 5 leagues of Europe we run in about 20th in the world. We've got no international class goalies and it's questionable now that Tim Ream has aged out whether we have any international quality center backs. So how in the world do you think the results aren't up to the talent level? For me right now comfortably beating everyone in CONCACAF and any team not in the top 25 would be fine for me. Maybe if the team gets a bit older, more experienced, and more mature (looking at you Weston!) then maybe we can start talking about upsets, but upsets by definition are against better teams.

Except we're not comfortably beating CONCACAF foes. Third in World Cup qualifying and only by goal differential. One road win at Honduras and that was it. Congrats he can win tournaments against CONCACAF on US soil versus inferior opposition. That's expected. When has he ever achieved the unexpected other than bad road losses to Trinidad and Tobago, for instance? Never. Every single usmnt manager since Bora in 1994 has pulled upsets off. Gregg is the only one who has never done it. Stop talking like upsets are impossible. Maybe under his leadership. Steve Sampson who many considered to be the worst national team coach since 1994 beat Argentina AND Brazil in competitions.

Austria’s team other than Sabitzer doesn’t really have some amazing squad, but they have a quality coach who understands how to play the game and shows how coaching quality makes a massive difference

I mean, Sabitzer is like the fifth best player on the team but OK. Laimer? Schlager? Alaba? Even Danso. Look at the teams those guys play for. How many US players do you think would start on that Austrian team? Maybe two? US players earned about 36k minutes in the big 5 leagues last year, and Austrian players earned like 55k. I think that makes a pretty massive difference as well. Also, you are literally talking about the inventor of gegenpressing, and a guy that commands about three times the salary of Berhalter. No way is a guy like that going to step down to coach a minor program like the USMNT. You want to replace Gregg with someone, lets talk about people with comparable salaries who'd actually take the job after the US fires a coach with the best record in its history.

Get the team to play to their potential? We are a better team than we have shown under GGG.

I was like the only guy on Twitter telling everyone that Berhalter was coming back regardless of Reyna Gate. They laughed at me, they mocked me, and they told me I was full of it. Ale Moreno here always tells it like it is and he doesn't sugarcoat anything so maybe him saying it will give more credibility to what I've been trying to get people to understand.

If he starts playing GIO as a 10 and shows he is willing to adapt and try a 4-2-3-1 then I would it is a sign he is willing to learn and I would say there is a small amount of hope for him.

US fans are as delusional as England fans. And I say that as a US fan. We have had one team in the modern history advance further in the World Cup than we did in 2022. ONE. And that was by a grand total of one match. From 1963-81 we didn't qualify for enter the Gold Cup. We've now had our 2nd best ever run of form in the Gold Cup. In the 3 years of the nation's league we've won every time. Of the trophies / championships still being played today, Gregg Berhalter has won 40% (4 out of 10). If we win today he'd be one win away from tying the most wins the United States has ever had at the Copa and be tied for the second. So, let's see, he took over a national team that had lost to T&D and failed to qualify for the world cup. Had the fewest losses and most points in a group since 2010 and tied fewest losses EVER at a World Cup, has dominated Mexico and won 3 straight nations leagues, went Runners Up, Winner, Semi Finals with a B team in the Gold Cup, is on track to equal most wins ever at the Copa, and oh yeah, half of the trophies in the trophy case essentially have his initials on them. Just because you don't like the tactics or the fact that he's a prickly personality - who cares? There are plenty of things I dislike about Gregg, his stubbornness, his refusal to admit his system - but at the end of the day, like it or not, he has achieved more with an incredibly young roster, a roster you could argue has not even collectively or individually really entered its prime - then we ever had in the past. And oh, yeah, the VERY best player on the team, the one player who has more impact than anyone else and who if we got hurt would suck all the donkey a** in the world IMO because its not even close in levels of importance - is 198% behind him. Because here's the other thing to keep in mind. There is NO guarantee, NONE, that the next manager actually does better. Its always easy to say he'd be better or he'd be better or he'd be better. How many teams, in the history of sports have fired a coach or manager, and then that team has fallen apart because no one appreciated what they did or what they had? Milwaukee Brewers lost their manager to the Chicago Cubs, after not wanting to really met his demands so he left and they let him. how's that going. Brewers are in 1st place, Cubs are in last place. Detroit Lions fired Jim Caldwell despite making playoffs on a few occasions and sucked worse than they did with him until very recently. Leeds lets go of Bielsa - um, how's that working out? Bayern - we have issues Nagelsman - well, how'd that go? 3rd place and trophyless? Dallas Cowboys famously ran off Jimmy Johnson. Point is no matter how "talented" a team or squad might be, if you've spent any time at all around competitive sports, you'd know that there is no guarantee that the next manager or coach takes you to next level or even replicates what the previous one achieved. Because its not just the X's and O's that gets changed. Its the entirety of the dynamic . And from the outside looking in its easy to say "oh, well that's a good thing." But there's no way of being able to know that ahead of time. There are very real reasons Gregg probably deserves to not be in charge. And I am aware of that. But at the same time, this idea that he's holding us back or something... its an insane amount of arrogance, lack of understanding who we really are as a national team or even who our players are - are we having anyone being considered as one of the top 15-20 players in the world? Starting at Bayern, Man City, Barca, Madrid, Arsenal? No? Most of them are bench players or players on mid-tier or lower teams. And that's not a knock. But this is not England. We're not Argentina, Brazil. Hell, how many of our players realistically start for Columbia? For Brazil? Urugay? CP doesn't start for Brazil. Not with their wingers. If your best players are not better than our countries best players, its insane to be "fire the coach! fire the coach!" Understandably that is how sports work. Been involved in them long enough to know that. But as the saying goes its not the X's and the O's, its the Jimmy's and Joe's. And while maybe we're better than we have been in a long time in that regard, we're light years behind the elite nations. Love Matt Turner. Love Ream. Big fan of a fit Weston McKennie and Adams. But if we picked a starting 11 from the Copa America - or even a best 22 - how many US national team members are there? Two? Maybe three max?

Key point ; to make the boys play like men. Gregg do it or bring an Argentinian or Uruguayan coach. Or that famous german coach. Klop?

My advice to GGG, coach the players, keep them happy, eager and lose and BE FLEXIBLE .....ready to make tactical changes the game presents.

If it wasn't for Pulisic's support, GGG would have been long gone. Unless that support is withdrawn, I fear that we are stuck with him.

I honestly think some of the Berhater haters will be disappointed if we make the semis or better. At worst we will make the quarterfinals which probably means he's gonna stick around for world cup like it or not

It's Bob Bradley all over again. I've heard this sort of dysfunctional and clueless whining from the "fans" before. They fired Bradley and the team hasn't recovered. It's been like 2009 since we really had something special to cheer for. We're only just now getting back to the level of talent we had under Bradley. And meanwhile the usual suspects would cheer if we brought another German clown in and defend the last one to this day.

They need to go decently far in the current COPA. Then they need to win the Gold Cup or at least come close. Then they need to get out of the group stage in the '26 WC......and possibly one more win. Only then will I change my opinion on Berhalter.

Starting XI. Turner. Robinson, Ream, Richards, Weah. Adams, Cardoso, McKinnie, Reyna. Pulisic, Balogun. This would provide service from the back, with a secure double pivot in Cardoso and Adams. McKinnie and Reyna could provide both support and when free creativity and attack. Pulisic would be freer and Balogun will have service. 0 excuses. Better to try this against Panama than Uruguay, but doubt we'll see such Panache from Berhalter. 👌

If Berhalter handles Uruguay and Colombia handily I would be a believer. This means against Uruguay, win, don't fall for their defensive trap and counter and make tactical adjustments with timely subs in the 2nd half to win. Same for a Colombia game. Versus Brazil draw or win, a repeat of the friendly, with a smooth and continual method to string attacks all throughout the game (copy the defensive performance as in the friendly). Has Berhalter ever shown this? No. The only massive wins or draws he's had has been played against teams that did not adjust to the USMNT standard 4-3-3 so Berhalter had to make little or no adjustments to his default tactic (think Mexico and England) while they themself played sub optimal tactics. If a team is set up to beat us, Berhalter gets trumped every time.

If he wins games they will say it was luck or they will say that it was despite Berhalter rather than because of him. And they'll actually complain. If we were to make a deep run at Copa America, they'd actually complain about it and whine about it and be unhappy. They've literally done this sort thing before.

If you want them to be soccer fans you'll have to win big games against competition not named Mexico. You won't do that with Berhalter. 2026 will be a wasted opportunity due to nepotism. Landon Donovan was the best American player and the 2002 team USA will never be topped until you have a great player like Landon Donovan who believes in USA soccer and doesn't need to play in Europe to believe he can compete. ​@cele. brim1 Never should have been hired in 1st Place, US Soccer lied through their teeth about doing an international search for a Manager. Berhalter wasn't even a middle of the ta le manager in MLS.and was sacked by the Swedish club Hammaby for being tactically inept. Berhalter owes his job to his brother being a executive in US Soccer.
