What would happen if you didn’t sleep? - Claudia Aguirre

View full lesson: ed.ted.com/lessons/what-would-...
In the United States, it’s estimated that 30 percent of adults and 66 percent of adolescents are regularly sleep-deprived. This isn’t just a minor inconvenience: staying awake can cause serious bodily harm. Claudia Aguirre shows what happens to your body and brain when you skip sleep.

I don't pull all-nighters often, but when I do, they're so peaceful. I love waking up early so that I can have a few moments to myself. Things become a little less peaceful when my sister wakes up, but all peace is completely disrupted when my dad wakes up.

I learned how important sleep is when I got into a routine in 7th grade, going to bed at 10 pm sharp (instead of my usual midnight-ish time). I noticed that I could focus on my schoolwork and absorbed information effortlessly. I'm sure results vary, but it definitely was like day and night.

Coding Ant people have different schedules for school. Take me for example, I get out of school at 17:00 and still have to go home so it’ll be around 17:20 by then. Than I have to learn a minimum of 3 hours to be able to finish everything including studying for tests etc. I also have to eat. The earliest I’ll have free time is around 20:45. And I still want to do something because otherwise what are you alive for? By the time that’s done it’s about 22:00 and that is the point where I’m READY to go to bed, not mentioning packing bags for the next day, setting your alarm etc. I’ll go to bed at around 22:30 everyday and wake up at 6:30 everyday because I have no choice if I want to pass the year.

Back in the early 80’s when I was in college I very regularly went 60 hours straight sans any sleep. In particular during my senior year I was awake from early Friday morning until late Sunday night. My routine was to leave right after my last Friday class and make a 3 1/2 drive home. Once there I visited with my girlfriend until I had to report to work at 11 pm Friday night to do the audit, working until 7 am. From there I’d go visit my parents for a bit and then spend the day with my girlfriend. We usually went out to some popular night clubs until I had to be at my hotel auditing job again at 11 pm until 7 am Sunday morning. After work I’d again visit family and my girlfriend until about 6 pm when I had to make the 3 1/2 drive back to college. I was always pretty exhausted by the time I got back to college but I always made it. Based on this video it sounds like it’s nearly impossible to do regular 60 hour periods of being awake. I don’t think I’d want to do that now that I’m in my 60’s but it really wasn’t all that difficult as a 21 - 22 year old.

I'm an adolescent and I get about 2-5 hours of sleep by going to bed at 10, not falling asleep till 2 or 3, and getting up at 5 to 6. Thankfully I can't feel it as my brain apparently ignores melatonin until it reaches Extreme levels. This means I can go 23 hours on one hour of sleep easily.

I am a competitive dancer and every night of the week I have a class starting at 4:30 and by the time im done all my classes the same night its 9:00. Sometimes the teachers run overtime 10 or 15 minutes so by the time i actually get home its usually 9:30 or 9:45. then i have to eat, shower, get changed, and probably finish up some homework i didnt have time for. by the time i go to bed its usually around 11:30 and then i have to wake up at 5:45 the next day. But i do understand what you are saying though.

At night when I finally had time to sleep my boyfriend noticed I frequently talked in my sleep, and once I looked it up, sure enough, sleep deprivation can cause sleeptalking. It was an alarm bell for me, and even though I did fine and thought I could handle little sleep, obciously it was affecting my body.

I've tried to find an answer to my question for s long so I thought id try KZread comments. Why does my whole body tingle when I’m almost asleep? It's not a tingling like some body part is falling asleep due to restricted blood flow, it is more of an insanely pleasant sensation that can happen for hours or minutes while I'm almost asleep. It is honestly one of the best feelings/sensations I've ever felt. It usually happens when I sleep too much, too little or sleep and wake up at weird times.

I'm Korean- and in high school, our classes ended at 10 PM and when I got home after taking the school bus it was like 10:30~11PM. Then I would eat fruits or snacks, maybe print out stuff that I need for the next day, wash up etc. Probably sleep around 1 AM if I'm lucky. I had to get on the bus by 7 AM (it came to my house) because we had to get to school by 7:40 AM. In my third year we even had to go to school on Saturdays from 10AM to 4:30PM i think? I remember that I used to get home on Saturdays and just start sleeping from 6 PM until next morning without even eating because i was just so tired.

Including getting up really early to go to school/college around 6:00-7:00 but teens don't naturally feel sleepy until around 10:30-11:00 and then usually it takes at least an hour to get to sleep (mostly because of worrying about school/college) ergo we don't get 9-10 hours sleep that we need but only 6-7 hours. And they wonder why we find it so hard to get up in the morning.

That moment when 90% of comments are from teenagers saying they can't get enough sleep because of school. There is such a problem with our education system if none of us know each other, have ever met each other, live in vastly different locations and we're all sleep deprived.

Ema Nekaf Not that I'm bragging, but throughout my high school life, I'm glad I am a part of the class that doesn't involve with typical school education that you don't need to learn to go to college, my class manly focus on real life education of getting a job, and manly self evacuation of life in general in the workforce. That's why I love being in part of the classes where it's less stressful and not entirely pointless at all where my classes don't give as much homework unless if classmates needs to caught up of their work, studying for just a test. All pays off better that I pretty much great to not suffer not wanting to sleep.

Ema Nekaf it's because common science (at least in the us) has operated on the assumption that teenagers function the same as adults. only recently have they realized that teenagers naturally get sleepy later at night (11-1), so they need a schedule that allows for a later wakeup time (7-9) to be most healthy. but we're still so stuck on that 9-5 adult work schedule, that no one wants to make those kinds of accommodations for the people who are going to be the future of society. i remember when i was in high school i was frustrated all the time because I couldn't get to sleep at the "right" time and would always end up tired and irritable. wasn't until my senior year (2010) that i started finding articles about the differences in the teenage sleep cycle. was reassuring and enlightening, but also maddening because i realized my sleeping problem was because of a schedule i couldn't control.

I never had a complete for years. It started when I was a child and became worse when I entered adolescence. After I discovered the bad effects of lack of sleep, I made efforts to improve my sleeping habits to get enough sleep. It's extremely difficult, but your brain and body will get used to the healthy pattern. Just be consistent. Now, despite disrupting my sleep pattern from time to time, I'm still wired to the healthy pattern.

No society DID and still IS DOING something to help students. People like Dr.K are explaining mental health problems and late night video game addiction and guiding people to a healthier lifestyle. People are trying to come up with a good educating school system to implement to their own country. I know we have Finland for reference already but coming up with an appropriate working education system for one's country is complicating and takes a long time. Informative videos like these are being spread everywhere which means people's awareness are being raised a lot in the recent time. Therefore is safe to say there are people working out there trying to fix these problems in their communities. So I recommend not saying stuffs like "As a society we do nothing" because not only it's very discouraging for people who actually are fixing these problems but it also discourages some if not a lot of people who haven't started yet, seeing the above phrase can discourage them from even trying.

And they also (most likely) don’t give you time to work on it for class because that’s when you learn and do more class work. You may also have 2 teachers that give you homework as well.

In 2019 my mother and I went on a bus to the big smoke 500 miles away so I could get my skin cancer on my top lip removed. Unfortunately I hardly slept the entire time three days we were there because dear mother snored and kept me wake and when I finally dozed during the night it was only for several minutes at a time plus I was my Autism made me anxious and tense about the whole trip. On the third night we were on the bus going back home I started to hallucinate. I finally made it to bed around midnight when we got home and because I was back in my own bed and in my familiar surroundings I fell asleep almost instantly and didn't wake until around 11:00AM the next morning and felt refreshed again.

Yes thr medicine I’m on definitely can have some effects but I’m the past saying up for close to this amount of time sober it’s pretty much the sam but less paranoia and definitely harder to think of sentences.
