The language of lying - Noah Zandan

View full lesson: ed.ted.com/lessons/the-languag...
We hear anywhere from 10 to 200 lies a day. And although we’ve spent much of our history coming up with ways to detect these lies by tracking physiological changes in their tellers, these methods have proved unreliable. Is there a more direct approach? Noah Zandan uses some famous examples of lying to illustrate how we might use communications science to analyze the lies themselves.

Excellent video. When we suspect a lie, I suggest we don't call it out directly, but instead call attention to the person's own role/self in the story, and ask for more details to see if they trip up. Assume good intent, but also trust your gut.

My favorite way to learn a lie is to ask someone else to ask the liar the same question, like for example I had a coworker who lied time to time, and she told me she was in the hospital so couldn't come in, but when someone else asked why she didn't come in, she told a completely different story to them because her comfort level was different with them

The biggest flag I’ve seen when catching a liar, is if you bring something up to the person, and they deny it, and you act like you believe them and let it go, and then they act unnaturally upbeat and kinder than they usually are, that’s a big sign they were lying, and think they got away with the lie, and now they’re being overly nice because a: they’re happy they got away with their lie, and B: they’re still trying to trick you into believing their lie. Example: a cheater is being questioned by their spouse. The cheater isn’t usually over affectionate or romantic, but you accused them of cheating, and they came up with an excuse like “I had to work overtime” or “I was out with my buddies” and the girl is like “you’re right, I’m just over reacting” And then suddenly they’re like “it’s ok babe, I understand, you don’t need to worry, let’s cuddle xoxo” And they’re uncharacteristically being romantic and attentive. It may seem sweet, but in reality, if someone who wasn’t cheating were suddenly accused of it, they’d instinctively get mad or at least irritated. To the younger people here, look out for this ✋🏻

It does make it much easier if you question a potential unknown motive being the reason behind your lies. Example: I am limping because my leg hurts, but what if I have some unconscious desire for attention that is causing me to limp and feel pain. Therefore my leg mustn’t really hurt for I am only limping because of an unconscious motivation.
