    3:24 the reason "American" bathroom stall divider walls and doors don't go "all the way down" to floor level is for 2 reasons: It's is easier to keep the floor clean without damaging the stall walls/doors if the these are cut short above the floor. And short cut walls/doors enhance room ventilation and air circulation. hope this helps 🙂

    On ships, the toilet is referred to as the "head" because in the sailing days, the toilet was at the head of the ship; a latticed platform I believe under the bowsprit. And those lever flush devices I believe were invented for ships, as a tank could easily splash as the ship rolled. Basically they are hydraulic timers - two chambers separated by a diaphragm. Flushing empties one of the chambers which causes the diaphragm to move opening the flish valve. There is a small hole that lets the emptied chamber fill up again to shut off the flush. Some one of my books on ocean liners (reproductions of magazine articles about the liners) explained how they work. Maybe Mauretania or Lusitania.

    Actually, wooden, "tall" ships DID have a place to relieve one's self. The captain, and officers had a hole over the water. Located at the bow, there were a couple of places with holes in boards for the crew, and passengers. It's why that place got the name "head". These heads existed as far back as ships like Golden Hind, and other ships of that era. Victory had them, too, as well as Constitution, I think. But no, they were definitely not as sanitary as ships built around, and after 1910. Thanks for sharing this.

    The Cameron movie gave the impression that everyone in first class was a millionaire in opulent suites, which was completely inaccurate. As you said, most of the first class cabins didn't even have private bathrooms and were actually quite modest. The first class tickets started at around 30 pounds (about $3300 in our money), so while you'd have to be of some means, you certainly wouldn't have to be a millionaire to afford that.

  • @Aleksandr017

    @Aleksandr017

    I think Cameron just focused on the richest of the rich, instead of trying to give the accurate view of the class overall. I guess the juxtaposition of the guy from the poorest section and the girl from the richest was needed for the dramatic arc. He also showed the third class passengers being lock away in their section during the sinking, but a little research would show that it wasn’t the case. But again, Cameron did not make a documentary, hence, like any movie, it should not be viewed as fully accurate.

  • @stuffchat

    @stuffchat

    Жыл бұрын

    I also picked up that unfortunately Cameron was trying to push class wars with his narrative. Notice how when Rose tells Jack who everyone is in first class, she does so with snide remarks to picture them all as evil and scandalous. Yet when Rose goes to party in Jack's part of the ship, they cut to Rose partying like a drunkard and skip any introductions completely. What kind of characters may have lurked in third class? Cameron will have us assume there were only perfect underdogs who commit no sin but somehow suffer all the time - note how the staff of the ship are depicted to talk to 1st class versus 3rd class passengers, not to mention 3rd class get locked up to drown. According to Cameron's propaganda anyway. Nice movie but I found it sad he couldn't keep his childish extremist emotional politics out of it.

    @@ironjohn5914 Actually no. Usually people with wealth can't "buy whatever they want" - ironically that's what poor people live by, which is why they are poor in the first place. To build up a fortune, one has to manage one's money carefully and wisely and set up a regular budget to plan where your money goes. Only a preplanned portion of your income will go towards leisure and luxuries, while the rest goes towards savings, investments, charity and necessities. That is how rich people become rich - sound financial management. If they, as you suggest, just "buy whatever they want" they'll just end up poor because anything that's a number works on the principles of math - either it's being added to or subtracted from and it goes without saying it can not only reach zero but go into the negative (debt). It's not about how much money you make or have, but about whether your money overall makes you more money, or ends up spent faster than it's coming in until finished.

    High end restaurants and hotels in the US have similar stalls. The reason why most public restrooms in the US have "walls" and doors that don't go all the way down to the floor seems very obvious. First, it's cheaper to buy and install a standard size stall rather than having to custom build to the room's size. Second, it's easier to clean/mop with the walls and doors not going down to the floor. Third, you can see if the stall is occupied, rather than having to knock and/or try the door to see which stall is available.

  • @johnjarvis3455

    Re narrator comment about public toilet stall doors in the U.S. not extending to the floor, the reason for this AND most public toilet stall WALLS also not extending to the floor is quite simple. It facilitates cleaning the stall floors more quickly and easily using spray hoses or longer-handled mops that can reach under the truncated stall doors and walls. In addition, stall doors or walls that do extend to the floor create additional joints and crevasses where the door/walls meet the floor...hard-to-clean places for mold and mildew to grow.

    Staying aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach gives visitors an idea what this would be like. The toilets in the original first class cabins are _Shanks_ with the lever flush valves as shown in this video. The surviving _public_ toilet stalls have the wood stall doors right to the floor. The toilets were piped to sewage tanks port and starboard in the turbo generator rooms which pumped to the ocean when full, when the ship was in service. Today, a similar sewage tank system is used, but pump out through hoses to the wharf to connect to the municipal sewage system. The 87 year old plumbing fixtures on the QM are so impressive, I have made videos of the incredible rate the *huge* bathtubs fill and drain, and also the flushing power of the _Shanks_ toilets.

    You've obviously never been the military or worked in some other capacity as a janitor. The reason why toilet stalls do not go to the floor is because otherwise, the stalls would be 20 times harder to mop and keep clean. If the stalls went down to the floor, you'd not only have to mop every individual stall, but you'd have have long cracks and tight corners what would be a janitor's real bitch to fully keep clean. What's true in some restrooms. People take janitors so much for granted, you don't know how hard they work or how important they are to today's world. They should get $36 an hour.

    Yes Sabrina, I read this somewhere as well, just as you said, that on Titanic third class passengers had automatic flushing toilets because they assumed those people had never used a high tech thing like a flushing toilet before, and so there was no need to teach the person how to push/pull a lever. I can only imagine that this was just on a round the clock repeating flush at 3 minute intervals mechanism whereby a tank slowly fills with water and when it reaches a certain level a float arm equipped valve triggers the flush and drains the tank and resets the flapper valve, or perhaps it was just even simpler than that, whereby water continuously flowed through the waste area at all times.

    I can quite believe that. Ordinary people in that era had outside toilets, which probably did not have piped water or any flushing mechanism. Many of those remained in use up to the 1950's and 60's. As a mainteance guy, I can tell you why the doors on modern WC's don't go all the way down. It's so if some joker jimmies the door or vandalizes the place, we poor cleaners can still get at the mess. A popular trick is to lock the door and then shimmy through the gap so it stays locked as a prank. Easily overcome with a long stick to hit the latch.

    Ever head of the term "died on the shiter"? The valsalva maneuver occurs during constipation and is the reason why so many people die of heart attacks while pooping. When you finally poop, your blood pressure drops so low your heart stops. For this reason, stalls in the USA do not go from celling to floor, cause how we gonna know if someone is dead or in distress, and as a nurse, I cant tell you how many times I or an paramedic has had to crawl under a door to do CPR or the amount of times I have gotten an EMS cause someone was on the toiliet and had a heart attack.

    One of the reasons public bathroom doors aren't ceiling to floor is economic in nature. When installing multiple doors even a small savings per door adds up.

  • @clockbuilderhg

    @clockbuilderhg

    Жыл бұрын

    The biggest reason they stop short of the floor is because it's easier to mop the stalls. When the stalls go to the floor, the corners collect dirt and in a building with many many toilet stalls that adds a lot of cleaning labor. With the stalls clear of the floor, it's easy to mop clear under them and keep the floor clean. Many commercial bathrooms have wall mounted toilets for the same reason.

    Just taking this opportunity to ask people to stop using the word “bathroom” for rooms with a toilet but no bath. Yes, I know a lot of houses have a toilet in their bathroom and people say “going to the bathroom” when going to use the toilet in there but if there is no bath in a room, or at least bathing facilities, then it’s not a bathroom.

    Hey, if I were a cleaner, I’d be glad to show anyone how to use the facilities! Better than cleaning pee or worse from the corners! Should have hired two attendants, one male, one female, for the third class passengers since some them lived without indoor plumbing and had no knowledge of how to use the toilets. You could also improve the personal hygiene of some who probably didn’t know or bother to wash their hands! That’s still important today! It really does cut down on spread of disease, especially the dreaded norovirus! There’s no quicker way to ruin your cruise! Few die of it, but most will wish they were dead at its worst!

    Everyone always wonders why American public toilets' doors don't go to the ground. It's simple. For emergencies. That is, in case someone has some kind of medical emergency while in the toilet stall. Say they have a heart attack or stroke. Or, okay, an overdose. How would one help them otherwise if they could not access the area? The doors and overhead areas are specifically put there so emergency personnel can crawl underneath, get inside and unlock the door. And, of course, this narrator is also forgetting the inimitable chamber pot. A chamber pot was, literally, a pot into which one could relieve themselves during the night and which was cleaned out each morning. Because it was routine to have one in every bed chamber at the time, even in poorer homes and country homes, I'm sure they were standard in all cabins. So forget the idea of public urination -- which, Hello!, why wouldn't men at least go up on deck and do their business overboard? -- and lose the image of having to run to an outhouse in the middle of a winter's night, too. Here's a thought. And I am serious, not being nasty. Do some research and a video on chamber pots. I believe they were used as far back as the Egyptian times. It's one of those things that were seldom recorded yet very common. (I even saw a video sometime back in which it was claimed people visiting Versailles in the 15th century relieved themselves in the halls and stair wells... like pigs. I think not.) It's like salt. People wonder why salt was so valuable in the old days-- and jump to the conclusion that it was because salt seasoned food. NO. I mean, it did season and preserve food, yes. It still does. But Salt, FYI, is also a very effective disinfectant and was widely used for all sorts of cleaning and sanitation purposes. (BTW, that's one for the survivalists out there. Salt is a key element in surviving. During the pandemic, when we were hoarding TP, we should have been hoarding salt.) So much is forgotten. So many critical details. It leads to many totally erroneous conclusions and it makes me sad.
