From a bad villain, to forgetting Lewis exists. Is there a way to fix Robocop 2's story? I try.

The fact the writers dropped the family part from the first movie like it didn’t even matter just goes to show how much they don’t give a crap about the previous film’s plot, or its fans. They completely rushed the first sequel by also ignoring Robocop 1’s continuity, and just did whatever they wanted with it. Robocop 2 could easily have wrapped up the very few issues that didn’t quite get resolved from last time, but instead, ended up becoming a movie follow-up that may have had SOME decent ideas on paper, resulted as a total waste of time in practice for audiences who loved the first Robocop. And worst of all; we still have Robocop 3 to get through for next week... Yay... 🙄

I picked up a graphic novel that was the original script of Robocop 2: it's kinda worse than the movie. The character that was the scientist lady in the movie is like a self help guru, and SHE ends up in the robot!

I agree what you have said about this trainwreck of a sequel. Yes, OCP wasn't a saint company, but it certainly wasn't a nazi parody like what this movie describes them to be. A few bad apples would be fine. Old Man acted like a completely different person. Johnson too. Just WOW!

Robocop 2 frustrates people because it's not a typical sequel. I'm going to make a video explaining why everything happens the way it does. The only reason the wife scene is even there if for juxtaposition to Cain. Robocop 2 is more interested in being meta than a sequel: A company has a huge hit so they rush a sequel into production without completely understanding what made the original so good in the first place. In other words, Robocop 2 is about...Robocop 2. And it's genius.

It's only genius if the movie works, and it doesn't. rangerreview is asking a fair question: what happened to Murphy? In the pursuit of dunking they dunked on themselves.

I like your idea of how to fix the movie but I have a suggestion for the robocop 2 sub plot: Instead of being a criminal or random thug (why anyone would think someone like this would be the perfect candidate to replace Robocop?) I think the new robocop should be another cop like Murphy, only more impulsive and corrupted. In fact, I think robocop 2 should be Lt. Roger Hedgecock, from the animated series. While the show was weak, pure "saturday morning cartoon" in a bad way, I like the concept of Hedgecock as rival for Robocop, someone who hates the hero because his presence makes cops like him look unecessary in eyes of the public. I can see Hedgecock having the same role in the movie, although he would much more unstable, constantly making reckless decisions and putting lifes in danger just so he can prove he is superior to Murphy. After one of his actions cause some cops to get injuried, Hedgecock could end up getting fired, but would be choosen by the evil corporation to be the new robocop. While the transformation is a sucess, Hedgecock end up becoming even more violent and reckless who kills any criminal in his way, caring nothing for the innocents caught in the crossfire. This would make Hedgecock work as dark mirror reflection of Robocop: While Murphy whole arc is about a man recovering his humanity (which in the movie could be represented by his connection with his family), Hedgecock gave up his own humanity for power. The climax could have both Murphy and Hedgecock trying to capture the ones who kidnap Murphy's family. However, while Robocop is there to save them, Hedgecock is there just to kill Cain and his thugs, putting Murphy's family in danger. With that, the big final showdown would be Robocop vs Robocop 2, with Murphy defeating Hedgecock, proving why he is the best choice to protect Metroid, not because he is advanced or better model, but because of his own humanity, which could cause OCP to finally acknowlege him as human rather than a product.

@@rangerreview1780 Yeah, most Robocop adaptations outside the movies, might not being good as the first movie but they had better ideas than the sequels. Even the robocop alpha commando animated series had a interesting concept of Robocop continuing to exist in a distant future, which could be a very insteresting plot for the final Robocop movie, with Murphy having to deal with the fact that he is immortal and will live while all his friends, including Lewis will die, instead of the The Dark Knight Returns rip off plot from Robocop 3.

I agree with most of your analysis of the film. I'm super sad that we didn't get any development in the relationship between Murphy and Lewis. Also thought it was stupid the way they handled Robocop's family situation. There was a poignant story to explore there, and they just dropped it. However, I think you fundamentally miss the point of the movie - it's a critique of neoliberalism / privatization. OCP are SUPPOSED to be evil, and the CEO is pretty much your standard IRL sociopath CEO. (You don't rise to the top of a corporation by being a good person - capitalism generally rewards nasty cold-hearted back-stabbing narcissistic behaviour, and the moral choice is rarely the most profitable one - which is why there is a statistically ridiculous number of psychopaths running the world atm.) The mayor represents democracy, which is under direct threat from capitalism and privatization. The movie needs these elements. Were they well executed? No. But you can't just get rid of them. They are literally the point of the entire film.

I agree. I had a lot of issues with the story, especially how little we saw of Nancy Allen and the lack of connection to any of the people who got killed. But I still really enjoy this movie. It's pretty hilarious, the action pops, and I thought the villain - Evil Robocop, a brain and spinal cord in a huge killing machine - was actually pretty cool.

Robocop 2 was awesome. Plus I didn't care about if there wasn't more of a emphasis between Alex & Louis. As far as his wife situation goes, bc this is a action movie not a soap opera but they should have brought her back one last time for closure. Other then that. Cane is one of the baddest robots to ever grace the screen. We got to see Robo chopped up. The mayor is hilarious. You guys are outta your minds. Robocop 2 was almost as good as the first one.
