What Went Wrong with MOTU Revelation - and What Went Right! | The Big Daddy D Reviews

Ойын-сауық

After my last He-Man related video got such an overwhelming response, I felt that a follow-up video was quickly justified in which I'll discuss in more detail what I thought about the new Masters of the Universe Revelation series on Netflix.
In this video, I will break down what went wrong with the new Masters of the Universe Revelation and some possible ways that could have made this better.
But I also talk about what the new series did really well, and why the amount of negative receptions aren't really justified!

I see your points and think for those same reasons the discontent for this show are valid. First, why would you use all the Easter eggs and references if you were going to completely change the narrative. Second, the whole Teela being hurt so she lashes out thing is stupid. These are battle harden vets, not new recruits, for God sake teela is being given the man-at-arms title which is a high ranking position. If you are trying to give a more mature spin to the show, you would assume that she has already dealt with loss in the battle field at this point in her career. Three, the king in the og show was a level headed, battle tested and loyal to servants/ friends. He had fought along side Duncan for years, he would never turn on him for something like that. Not to mention that he always wanted prince Adam to be more of a warrior type and when he finds out he was, he goes ape sh!t. Four, prince Adam acted the fool because he physically resembled he-man so much that he didn't want people to suspect who he really was. There were a couple of episodes where he had to save the day as Adam and had no problems doing so. I could go on and on about this but I'll stop there. I respect your opinion, but I think this show was badly thought out and the second season will not be able to fix what the first broke. Shitting on fans of the og show for pointing this out is a bad idea and that is why the show was not left alone, but I respect your opinion and I humbly disagree.

That's fine, we're not going to agree on everything. This show has certainly becoming a talking point for MOTU fans and not everyone is going to have the same opinions. But thank you for putting your thoughts down in such a level headed way. I thought that the way that Randor reacted to Prince Adam/He-Man dying was handled so much better in the He-Man/Thundercats comic book run. It was much more in character that we'd expect Randor to act. At the end of the day, he was so proud of his son and the hero that he'd become. Of course, this death doesn't last long and He-Man is back a few issues later!

You don't need to have women with huge knockers or lipstick (OG She-Ra). The new She-Ra in 2018 gave us a somewhat masculine Adora/She-Ra & yet, many actually like that show, so quit griping. Besides, this is a brand that has its fair share of redesigns over its multiple iterations.

"What is wrong with that?" you asked in the end of your video here is my answer. I do understand that the story is only halfway told. He man, as prince Adam is very poorly treated by everyone (his father, the other heroes in preternia, especially the new Teela), a show that I thought was originally aimed at boys (she ha for girls) has in my opinion no male role models (the King turns into a jerk, I lost my father at 13 I am no stranger to loss, Dunken is always apologizing for everything, the hero's of Preternia pick on the weak kid, Adam, and other than extras the rest are dying, Orko, or are bad guys). Now for what I don't get: why do people like the new show as a show(yes all the Easter eggs are amazing). The new main character has had a total personality transplant and with only five episodes every minute of screen time they have should be highlighting this new characters personality, and what I saw made me ill. She was self doting, harsh , brash, disrespectful, apathetic, selfish, self-centered, ungrateful, dispassionate and resentful to point out a few traits. Whether she has a girlfriend or a new workout coach and barber I don't care, I don't see any attempt of a story ark that is going to change those personality flaws. If memory serves me right (just got done watching the filmation 130ep series and x-mas special this last month and still found it enjoyable, but aged) Filmation Evilyn seemed more evil than Skeletor and always waiting for a chance to take him down and take over, not in any way how they are portraying her as beneath Skeletor and maybe a romantic interest. I always found the Filmation show to be a good moral compass: respect others, try to see things from their point of view, don't be afraid to ask for help, listen to your parents, dont lie or cheat etc. Some of these lessons were told at the end of The show by Teela herself and now the new Teela totally forgot them. I will say the animation quality is superb the voice acting is pretty good the musical score is amazing but the story in my opinion has none of the spirit of the original which they said this was a spiritual successor, and I personally find it disrespectful to what the original show did, especially when people involved in making the new show make comments about the old show not being progressive, when Teela was the best pilot in eternia, she was also captain of the guard she did missions on her own and she ordered around other Masters of the universe. The sorceress was the most powerful being while inside of Castle Grayskull. When men-at-arms wasn't available and he's depicted as the smartest inventor around the second person to go to is Adam's mom the queen. Evilyn was obviously biding her time to take over. Do you have any thoughts on this video?(made by someone who probably loves the original) kzread.info/dash/bejne/jIauqNKkpavLhLg.html This new show has really messed with me I would really appreciate your point of view on my comment. Indeed. I did a section scripted at one point about comparing MOTU Revelation to Game of Thrones, but I ended up cutting that out because it broke up the flow of the video. Essentially, people judged GOT following it's ending. That was understandable. The story had finished, and some people did not like the way it ended and the fate of some of the characters. People that are judging MOTU Revelation now aren't even waiting for the story to finish; they're already saying that they hate and/or characters. Like I said in the video, wait until the story finishes first!

You started off on the right foot with all the hate not being justified from the aspect of not watching the show. I wouldn't watch it. However, I grew up with the OG series and as soon as it sounded like a bait and switch. It wasn't what I wanted to watch for. If you sell me a Superman show and he is hardly there. I don't buy it. The issue I think with the other series you point out has less to do with the main Character as being female. A good point is Star Trek. I watched Voyager and I enjoyed it. It wasn't about what the sex of the character to me was, but just great stories of her doing her best to get her crew home before they die of old age. Janeway was a strong female and had others, but they also had good characters all around. I love the whole cast. You are as bad as those channels you put down. When you go that route as to demonize fans for not liking a strong female character. Rey from Star Wars was a Mary Sue. She hardly was shown needing training. Even Darth had years of training both in light and dark. Also, they needed to forget the live action movie. As I watched. You also do the normal thing of making excuses for killing off Heman. A flash back isn't Heman exactly. I want to watch a show about Heman. So I will keep my old show. As it still has the best transformation of all time.

You make a very good argument. However the problem I have with this so-called Masters of the Universe show the fact that there are no Masters of the Universe. It is 100% the Tela show. All of The Masters of the Universe are missing. You get em kill Roboto in the third and fourth episode you get and kill Mothman in the first episode you only see the Masters in the first battle no one has a speaking part you see them running into battle that's it. You make Tela the central character where she's always been an important character. She is very unlikable I have described her more colorfully in the past. But I'll refrain from using such language on this Channel. The voice actors are not the greatest choices. We were promised a continuation of the filmation series and we got this. I'm not crazy about the homosexual innuendos or subtle hints. I and other fans absolutely hate the race swapping of characters. I have no problem with characters of different colors or whatever but my heroes my characters I don't need to know who they're diddling in the closet. The original story has always been He-Man and Teela will get together at the end of the fight they will be the rulers of Eternia. The unproduced sequel would have had their son going on to lead his own battles against Skeletor and evil Lyn son. Not feeling going off to have a sexual experimentation some chick that only appeared in the comics and was another white redhead. One angry fan even said and this was a black man to give them an original character and don't give him a hand-me-down race swapped King Grayskull. King Grayskull was always a big strong blonde guy which they decided they didn't want to of in the show. If this wasn't billed as and given the illusion of being Masters of the Universe it was a completely different narrative and they weren't hijacking our favorite characters to tell this story and change their very core I could see myself having like this period but given what they did to my beloved characters I and other fans of this franchise absolutely hate it for what they did to our characters Our Heroes our friends the ones we grew up with as children. I will watch part 2 I'm not optimistic for a better review for better storytelling. But I will watch it if for no other reason than I hate the cliffhanger. But this is not He-Man and the Masters of the Universe this is not even the Masters of the Universe this is an alternate universe Teela and her story because the Masters of the Universe aren't in this show there's been no no sign of the other Masters sure we get men-at-arms the Sorceress in orco but they're not even minor characters they are window dressing for this alternate version of Tila's story

Nice to see something that isn't Outrage for Clicks from people who are Super Big Fans!(tm) ((Just never mentioned the brand they're super big fans of ever before)) that has dominated the discourse. For me, I don't like Teela whenever she goes "I was wroooonged!" but when she isn't like that I think they wrote her well. I liked that Evil-Lyn, Orko etc got bigger and more interesting roles. I liked that Beast Man wasn't a silly idiot. I liked that Scare-Glow was genuinely terrifying. And I liked Adam's wisdom. The two biggest gripes for me in the end was Mark Hamill, as I felt he just did Another Joker, and the "Gotcha! Stabbed!" ending.

I had no problems with the marketing of this. The name of the series (part) gives us a heads up that secrets will be revealed. I knew this was going to focus on Tela, showcasing her learning the truth about her life. It was hinted in the original series that Duncan was the Sorceress's husband. And it was shown that the Sorceress was Tela's mom. My issue with it was Tela's redesign, I couldn't stand her haircut and overly buff look. Mark Hamil giving us a taste of Joker in part 2 killed me! Honestly, people being this bent out of shape over redesigns when there's been multiple iterations of this entire brand over the years is silly. I mean, we've the comics (the beginning mini pack-ins that came with the toys & those made by big time rival competitors Marvel and DC), the '80s Filmation cartoons (both _He-Man_ & his literal sister counterpart _She-Ra_ in their original animated incarnations), the '90s _New Adventures of He-Man_ series (basically He-Man in space & not just on the planets Eternia or Etheria either), the live action movies (both the mid-'90s version of a live action _He-Man_ [which replaces Orko with a Leprechaun-like creature and displaces both the heroes of Eternia & the evil forces of Skeletor on our modern-day Earth, in particular in a big metropolitan city] & the rumblings of a forthcoming live-action _She-Ra_ movie seemingly unrelated to the most recent outing for the "Princess of Power"), the 2003 sort-of prequel _He-Man_ reboot that aired on Cartoon Network, the 2018 Netflix _She-Ra_ reboot (in which She-Ra/Adora is in a canonical lesbian relationship with her genuine cat-girl [species: magicat] rival Catra in season 5 after 4 seasons of abuse towards Adora & Catra from adopted mother figure Shadow Weaver, corrupted A.I. Light Hope, later reformed ex-villain Hordak who ends up dating nerodivergent tech princess Entrapta, ultimate "Big Bad" Horde Prime, and most upsetting of all, by each other [primarily from a severely broken to the point of being suicidal Catra towards a well-intended Adora & in Catra's toxic mind, from Adora towards Catra when Catra felt as if Adora abandoned her, never mind when Catra uses a First One's disk to infect the Sword of Protection & not only corrupt She-Ra into a near-murderous rage until she's separated from the sword, but subsequently, result in a de-powered Adora acting like a clueless drunk]), and of course, this newest _He-Man: Revelations_ cartoon and the recent talk of more _He-Man_ / _She-Ra_ / _Masters of the Universe_ branded projects.

I personally won't be able to fully judge master of the universe revelations until after part 2 comes out, but I can judge how bad of a character Teela is in the series by how she's being portrayed so far. Teela simply isn't a likable protagonist due to her negative reaction to Adam's death and revelation that he is He-man, her unwarranted anger at the royal family when they lost their son while making it all about her, and how she was reluctant to save magic even though the fate of the entire universe is at stake. Not to mention that she doesn't properly set things right between her and Adam when they meet again. Adam/He-man died saving Eternia and the universe, and Teela still makes it seem like she was the one who was wronged. Adam just feels more like a hero in this series than Teela ever was in this series so far. It just makes it that Adam was the better protagonist and should have been the protagonist in this series over Teela. Also, He-man really doesn't appear in the first 5 episodes. He-man and Adam appear in only 3 episodes individually. He-man appeared in the first episode as part of the story, while appearing in episodes 2 and 3 in flashbacks. Episode 4 doesn't really count as He-man appearing because it really isn't He-man, just his image. Plus He-man doesn't even appear in episode 5 at all, only Adam does. Just as Adam only other appearances so far in this series are in episode 1 and the end of episode 4. Sadly, He-man and Adam are only part of the plot in episode 1, only truly returning to the plot at the end of episode 4, in which Adam doesn't even become He-man even at episode 5. I am also not a fan of Skeletor becoming master of the universe and stabbing Adam before he can become He-man, when Adam just got back. I really hope He-man defeats Skeletor in part 2.

There are interviews that follow further explaining this as much as Smith was allowed to say. I get why some people didn’t like like the way Teela was presented but you made the point that yes people deal with grief differently. Yeah I did not like her in the end of episode one and beginning of 2 but she grows and that grows on you. Thank you for the review but after giving all 5 episodes a chance I did not enjoy the show. My opinion, flashback memories do not count as the character being "in" the episode. The changes in character did not bode with me, a tiger doesnt change his stripes because he succeeds or failes at a hunt. Regardless, thank you for an insightful review.

When Kevin Smith said he was bringing the show back I had high expectations that it would be the same as filmation however I twigged it wasn't actually about he-man just before it was released (the clues in the name "Masters of the Universe" it never said He-man so it was obvious that heman wasn't going to be a main part. However after watching it 3 times I must say its not to bad. Its an 9 out of 10 from me (I'm a hard person to please when it comes to revamping my favourite shows from my childhood....😂) as you mentioned Thundercats Roar I must say I've not watched it either

I was very impressed with part 1 though I did freak the f-k out when Heman was killed right away the Telia’s haircut sent my head for a spin too. But I grew to love the animation the most. I thought it was a lead into the new Heman series on Netflix. So, I started to watch the first episode and said WTF???? They were all teenagers and sharing the power of Greyskull??? And to top it off Orko is a robot???? Yea that wasn’t for me. Another thing they did right on Masters of The Universe was to go into Orko’s back story and how his name was actually Oracle. Very well done. Sorry I didn’t mean to go into rant about the other show but it did remind me of Orco’s back story. Thanks for listening and because of your review I have subscribed and look forward to more of your shows

I'm glad to hear someone's positive review, but there are so many points I disagree with here. The bait and switch was one thing, but KS literally said this show was for the fans. The fans wanted a He-man show. Snippets of He-man in the episodes is a joke. He's not really there. He's just a legend or a ghost here. Adam is so meek and looks reluctant, like he's been doing the job so long and thinks it's better off in someone else's hands. That's so sad! They kill him and bring him back only for his power. Just like Superman in Justice League. And yes, much like Superman, you have to challenge his mind and his emotions, not his brawn. Anyone watching He-man is looking for the male power fantasy. The male role model. A compassionate person with the power to do good. You want something heroic and grand. The easter eggs are great, and I learned a few from this video, but again, that's not what makes a show good.

Too bad. The "male power fantasy" is patriarchal, sexist & dead. Deal with it. And I happen to be a man who grew up with the original _He-Man_ and loved the "most powerful man in the universe" idea, but I also have come to grips with the fact that times have changed and that such an ideology doesn't work in this day & age.

Sadly, over the last few years Hollywood and the American entertainment industry more generally have sucked away all my nostalgia. I've none left. No rose-tinted glass to hide the flaws and partisan ideologies in what they produce. I wish i did. My expectations are no longer being subverted by this kind of storytelling. I can guess exactly what's going to happen at nearly every major plot twist. It doesn't make me angry, though, just sad. And when the sadness eventually departs, as it always does i'm just left with cold indifference towards entire franchises: not just the new stuff, but often the older stuff i'd enjoyed in the past too. Western pop culture is increasingly irrelevant to my life.

Sorry but revelations no matter how hard they try to dress it up is terrible there's certain things you do and dont do with certain properties, franchises ,characters, and what not to do ,and they pretty much checked all the boxes on what not to do and have continued to do so in the illustrious disconnected woke Hollywood world ,as far as I'm concerned Hollywood can keep their woke imitation and fans who have breathed the original its life will probably see it as non canon garbage and still eagerly wait for an actual good adaptation not a woke feminist, LGBTQ ,diversity politics, woke Hollywood version.I speak for alot of people growing up as an 80s kid to see things I grew up with be destroyed by a generation of spoiled brats who have no creativity discipline or respect for things that came before them and it shows in the way they executed revelations. These rotten bastards shouldn't be allowed to write a children's book nor any other story for that matter when the show is basically a feminist wet dream to create and be a part of this man hating shitshow.

You keep using the term "woke" as if it's a terrible thing. I don't think you know what it means. Being "woke" is the definition of being aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice). How, exactly, is that not a good thing?

  • @thewasp7324
    @thewasp73242 жыл бұрын

FACT: Most of the Revelation haters are NOT He-Man fans. Sure, I don't doubt they remember He-Man. But calling them fans is a stretch. Many of them are keyboard culture warriors on a crusade against whatever they deem to be "woke" culture. Can I prove they are not fans? Absolutely. Almost every critique of this show is something that already happened in the history of this franchise. A TRUE fan would know that. Examples: The haters hate what they call "race swapping", and were up in arms about King Grayskull and Andra. BUT, this happened in 2002 with Zodak. Nobody cared then. And 2002 Zodak was an awesome character. The haters have their panties in a bunch because He-Man was "sidelined" as the hero. A real fan remembers this happened multiple times in the Filmation series. "Quest For He-Man", "Hunt For He-Man", "Prince Adam No More", and "The Problem With Power" all "sideline" He-Man for part of the story. And some of those are great episodes. Haters don't like Teela getting the spotlight. Again, a TRUE fan would remember some Filmation classics like "Teela's Quest", "Teela's Triumph", "The Witch and the Warrior", and "Teela's Trial". (In the last example, she resigns her post, just like in Revelation, haters! Not so out of character now, is it fools?) Characters dying? DC comics killed off Orko, Moss Man and Roboto long before Kevin Smith did. In summary, the haters CLEARLY are not real He-Man fans, and as I just proved, they are pretty stupid too. I LOVED Revelation! (But unlike the haters, I am a TRUE MOTU fan.)

You give him too much credit. Teela acts more like a villain than a hero. The writers went into stereotypes they claimed they're avoiding. All the male characters are cowdowing to the "female" characters. The women are more like the Tumblr cult definition. Men with the unfortunate sin of female anatomy. It's confirmed that Kevin Smith is a non-fan. He is found guilty. Now just wait for games workshop to sue him for copyright.

But you'll always have the so called purist mad that you didn't follow the exact original script from the beginning. Heck I remember the hate the Star Wars Prequels recieved and it was pretty good.
