What we loved (and hated) at Gatorland - Orlando, Florida

For over 70 years, Gatorland has been a uniquely Floridian attraction in Central Florida. Called the "Alligator Capital of the World," this attraction is part theme park and part zoo. We found a lot to love about Gatorland - and one thing we did not enjoy - and we will share it all with you here. This place is home to over 2,000 alligators from tiny babies to full grown 14 foot long adults - many of whom were nuisance alligators which were expected to be euthanized until Gatorland stepped in to rescue them. Plus, there are many other animals on exhibit in addition to gators. Please join us as we tour this popular park!

The stress of the alligators is why they only use 1 per show (and each alligator only does 1 show). It's no different than taking your cat to the groomers - it's stressful and you 'force' your cat to do it, but it doesn't hurt them. The alligators are cared for, they're treated well, there isn't an issue. If the alligators really hated doing the shows - they wouldn't. They know the handlers (in your own words) and they trust the handlers not to hurt them.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. We were unaware that the gators only get used on one show a day so that is good to hear. We tried to be pretty fair about the whole thing in our video. We mentioned (as you state) that the gators know their handlers - and we stated the gators seem to be willingly going along with parts of the show since there is no human who could make a full grown gator hold his mouth open if he didnt want to do so. I do like your comparison of taking cats to the groomer (or vet). You are right - it is very stressful and we do make our cat go. But we only do that because we think there is a benefit to the cat in doing so, even though one assumes the cat can't understand that. If someone was stressing out their cat just for entertainment and not for some good reason, that would likely irritate me. I kind of look at gator wrestling in that way. As we said in the video, the gators don't seem to be getting hurt physically but they are being stressed out for something that doesn't really benefit them. Add to that the fact that alligator wrestlers do occasionally get injured by gators if they decide to stop cooperating and I am just not sure it is worth it. We understand there are plenty of people who disagree though. I do hope the gators are being well treated and cared for (and didn't see anything that made me think otherwise). As we said in the video, while we found this show hard to watch, we loved everything else we experienced at Gatorland and would probably go again sometime... though we might skip the alligator wrestling show. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts with us.

OMG... the baby racoon was so cute... Mr. Gator was literally just waiting for him to find a way in... ha ha... I'm pretty sure the last time we were there (a long time ago), they were just building the train and there was no water play area or zip line area... or maybe they were building the trail for the stomping gator truck thing... none of these were there at the time... the boardwalk areas look awesome... I agree with you fully about the wrestling... not trained... not enjoying participating, just being forced for our pleasure... I don't like it... love the information for sure... I think sometimes people just don't care so much about the less 'cute and fuzzy' critters... great overview guys...thank you!

We enjoyed your tour of Gatorland, Jack and Alice. It's a place we've often thought about visiting over the years, but never have. We also learned something because we've never heard of Leucism before. I had to stop and conduct extensive research (I googled it! 🤣🤣) to find out the difference between leucism and albino. Now I know! (had I not paused I would have found out easier!) I understand your feelings, but since Steve Irwin, even before, I think that's what many folks want to see. It raises money for the rescue cause, Gatorland is involved with. So does the gift shop! The sign at the end was hilarious. Sad, but I think some folks need a reminder! Thanks for bringing us along.

This is so fun!! Gatorland was THE FIRST video I made arriving in Florida from Sedona. I had a neighbor in AZ who owned a capybara, lol! 😂 I agree - I don’t like seeing them sitting on the gators. I understand your feelings - I sometimes think animals have more common sense than humans. I recently saw a lady w her child feeding a shark a chicken and they both fell in the water. Good grief. I do like their gift shop. All the best in 2023!!! 🎉

Please, birds! You can steal my food! Just please stay away from those gators! Loved the giant poo eating rodents! Thr racoon was adorable! Thank goodness for the fence though. I definitely did not expect this place to be as big as it was. Cool that it has a train & zip lines too, but I'd pass that and the monster truck ride. The gator rasslin wouldn't really be my thing wither. I doubt the gator enjoys being wrestled and there definitely is a risk factor for the guy's safety. I'm glad you were able to take the bad with the good and sum it all up to a day well spent. I'm fascinated with alligators, mainly out of fear though. They terrify me, but are amazing creatures and it's always fun to see them up close, safely in a place like this.

The giant poop eating rodents were something to behold. As were the food thieving birds. But overall, with the exception of the gator wrestling, we found a lot to explore and enjoy here. We really were expecting a place about a fourth of this size with just alligators to look at - and we knew about the alligator wrestling show. So we didn't think this was going to be a place we could recommend. But it turned out to be fun and we do recommend it - even if we wish they would find another way to show off their gators rather than wrestling.

Well that show is the final confirmation that I won't be going. Imagine if SeaWorld treated their dolphins in that way. Chasing them around the pool, dragging them up on land by their tails, provoking them to bite, sitting on them, taping their jaws shut, and twisting their heads around. Steve Irwin knew how to do shows with crocodilians without abusing or disrespecting them. Of course the sand is not painful, they're covered in armor, but it's highly stressful for them to be chased around and manhandled in that way. The fact that it happens regularly doesn't make it better, it just means stress is more regular.

That was such a good place to spend 4 hours guys. Sooo many alligators and so close up to you all ! Had to laugh at those thieving birds laying in wait for any kind of animal or human food 🤭 we have seagulls here that do that ! I loved that there were so many other birds like the parrots, flamingos, emus and especially the cute budgies which we grew up with and adore. The large rodents living with the flamingoes surprised me though, I don't like what they eat haha . But then there were goats and snakes and crocodiles too and also a racoon that was trying to get in to this paradise land ! Alice I wondered why you avoided the zip wire over the swamp of crocodiles and alligators 🤔 😃 This was brilliant but i had to agree with you over the wrestling with the alligators, that seemed sad . Loved this :) ~ Anna 👍

Those birds could be a bonus meal for the alligators. Love the Emus. Pretty Flamingo. Those Capybara look like huge guinea pigs. UGH what disgusting habits they have! I would definitely pay $10 for a capybara hands on experience. Love the hands on Petty enclosure. How cute is that Racoon trying to get in. 🦝 I bet it was disappointed. I have eaten Crocodile meat, I suppose there would not be much difference. 11:08 you cannot do this with a Salt Water Crocodile, I have never seen this act done. He would have become a meal ticket. Great day out for all ages. Seemed like there was more to love than hate.
