What Was Hygiene Like On Pirate Ships

Ойын-сауық

Pirate ships were dirty - there's no way around it. The life of a pirate was fraught with danger and disease, but the pirates themselves did find ways to clean themselves and their surroundings - at times.
Maintaining hygienic practices on a pirate ship was an uphill battle. Lack of access to clean water, combined with confined living spaces, led to the rapid spread of disease. Harsh elements and inadequate nutrition further contributed to generally poor health. Baths, laundry, and oral hygiene were at a minimum, even with a somewhat surprising amount of medical resources.

Just absolutely incredible for me to watch this video after having seen first-hand such artifacts less than a month ago--truly stellar!

It’s because when they take over another ship, it’s usually in the daytime and when they have to go inside the ship it’s very dark. Not a whole lot of what was mentioned in this video actually applied exclusively to pirates, most of what was mentioned applied to all sailors during this time period. The only real difference between life on a pirate ship and life on a navy ship was that officers lived better and pirates typically elected their captains. But sailors aboard navy ships suffered from many of the same problems that their pirate counterparts did, got paid less, and often faced harsh discipline for any infractions.

Rum was a great antiseptic. And there were some dental precautions taken. Europeans did not have a severe problem with tooth decay until after the sugar trade (honey and refined sugar beet were the preferred sources before that) ...and pirates were soon to learn about dental issues and pain/inflammation. In fact they did use seaweed and alcohol to brush out residue and foul odors from their mouth. They were often drenched with storm rain and often used spices to mask odors....(bay rum for example)...but generally were more well washed than landlubbers.

If we could just for a minute or two smell the stench aboard one of those 17th century sailing ships, I guess there'd be way fewer books and movies romanticizing this particular period and profession. Heck, anyone who's been to the Caribbean or another tropical climate probably can imagine what the smell would be like without air conditioning, deodorant and dental hygiene/medicine *plus* everyone running around in layers of unwashed, old clothes made from wool.

Sailors through the ages found out that water goes bad about two weeks into the journey, so they decided that alcohol is a suitable way to disinfect it, so they started making drinks like grog (water + rum + spices) and drank it constantly, they were crews of alcoholics that were in constant need of a drink. Plus the hard tacks that were made in that time are probably still edible today.

Pardons were actually quite common. Woods Rogers started that back in the 1720's in Nassau.

It wasn’t just pirates either! When John Adams first travelled to France to negotiate for naval support, he literally had to scold the soldiers on the *Boston* into getting everything clean and sanitary.

For the common sailor of the day, living conditions were bad regardless of being on a pirate ship or a “ legitimate” ship. The Captains and Officers on “legitimate” ships were often tyrants. Pirate ships were much more democratic in their leadership. So, for many folks, being a Pirate was a very viable option.

To train yourself not to lose hunger by this. I could eat without problems, I personally only struggle when seeing a public execution in the news while eating >:( EDIT: In german news they showed that black guy getting publicly executed by that police man, that was cruel and literally a fkin public execution
