What To Wear While Figure Skating!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello Skaters! So many times I have gotten questions from some of you about what to wear while figure skating, that I finally decided to answer your questions with a video! Everyone has their own personal preferences with what they wear while ice skating, but I am going to give you my top tips!
Remember to wear layers, some close to the body, some looser, that will give more warmth. I've got a few links below, where I could find things similar, (Or exactly the same) as what I showed you in the video. Enjoy!

Being a male skater, I’ve found it incredibly hard to obtain tight-fitting men’s leggings, but I did manage to get some (with pockets too!) from Reebok. To cover boot laces, I also wear boot covers. You should make a video of boot covers (different designs and brands) if you haven’t done so already.

I know this video is old but just wanted to say I really appreciate how comprehensive your channel has been! I signed up for LTS Adult 1 this winter having only skated recreationally before, and after about a minute of me being on the ice they said I had to move up to Adult 2. 🙃 Now I feel like I’m playing catch-up, but your videos have been so helpful in getting me up to speed. I definitely didn’t expect to be doing backward wiggles in my very first LTS lesson, but I was glad I’d watched your video on it beforehand so I at least had an idea of where to start. (I have a LONG way to go, LOL 😅) Thanks again!

Would love other colours, but without the bling - although I quite like some sparkles at the ankle edges. Would definitely buy some and leg warmers too. Good luck.

About gloves. As skaters we need them not only to protect our hands on falls, but also to protect from wind! Skating is fast, and some people go to outdoor rinks and the weather can be windy. Your skin will suffer a lot from these factors, getting dry, itchy and weathered. It's also great to start wearing gloves in your everyday life for the same reason whenever it's cold enough outside. Any, even thinnest one, layer of protection will do just right.

I've been living in Washington for 6 years. When I first moved here I was freezing with 3/4 layers. After years of adjusting, I show up skating in a short sleeve and one thin long sleeve, and always get off the ice with just a short sleeve. Take Coach Julia's advice because being cold is so uncomfortable! Unless you know you are truly adjusted to the cold like some of us 😂

I am not a coach, but you haven't had an answer, so I will try to answer you. Most of the better skaters I see on the rinks have some type of padding when they are working on new skills, but many of them don't. No one makes fun of the skaters who are padded. Their choice. A bad injury is a lot of time lost, though, as well as a lot of pain. One older man came back after a hip fracture. He was telling people that he wished figure skaters had more encouragement to wear protective padding, now that he'd had a bad fall and months of recovery. Beginners in the LTS programs are required to wear helmets. Hockey players wear pads & helmets for a reason, though there's a hard puck flying around and everyone is whacking things with sticks. They can still get bad injuries from collisions and high speed falls, so padding and head protection are a must. I'm old, past menopause, so I'm as padded as I can get when I'm on the ice. After breaking a wrist while practicing 3-turns, I do not want another fracture ever again. I always wear wrist braces under my gloves. Currently they are braces designed for rollerblading. Although there are wrist sleeves padded in the lower palm/wrist for figure skaters, the lack of a rigid brace makes me think that those wouldn't prevent a fracture. I like to use glove-mitten hybrids because the mitten part is warmer than a glove, and the fingerless glove part allows me to adjust my laces without taking off the gloves. I've used both gloves and mittens. The hybrid works best for me. I bought skating shorts with Poron XRD pads to wear under my pants, but the pads weren't quite in the right place for protecting my hips. I now have the hip pads & sacral pad in skating shorts that I sewed to fit me. I wear them when skating outdoors in the summer, too. I have hockey pants that I wear in addition to my skating pads when I'm on the ice, but that's because I really don't want a hip fracture. When I'm learning new skills, I look very strange with those on, but I haven't broken anything since I bought them, and I've landed pretty hard a couple of times. My elbow sleeves with D3O padding (the ones designed for soccer players) are comfortable while skating. I don't even notice them and they've saved me from an elbow fracture a time or two. I've got knee pads, though that's a work in progress. Rollerblading knee protectors are great outdoors, but they are like a bowling ball on the ice if you fall on your knees. I don't like the sleeve type knee protectors because all of them seem to bunch up and pinch the backs of my knees. I'm converting some wrestling knee pads to attach with velcro outside my pants. A woman at the rink ordered custom crash pants from a company in Australia that have both hip/sacrum and knee pads. She waited months for them to arrive. They look great, not too bulky. I didn't ask how much she paid. Other skaters have knee sleeves with padding that are sold for figure skaters. Many of the better skaters don't use head protection, but some wear the headbands designed for soccer players. I wear a helmet with a D3O liner. I tried the soccer band that others wear at the rink, but the band loosens up as it warms up while wearing it, so the correct size feels uncomfortably tight at first. It gave me headaches. A snowsport helmet with D3O liner works better for me. HTH

Thanks Coach Julia, just a comment for the guys...If you're uncomfortable with the look of leggings, you may want to have a seamstress or tailor make a couple of skating pants for you out of a suitable 4-way stretch fabric. Alternatively, leggings with shorts on top can work. The key thing for a male is not to be tempted to wear the "stretchy" pants or joggers you get in regular shops, they do not stretch enough and you will be very embarrassed when you split the seams :-) . Also, if you wear leggings with shorts, alot of shorts are not suitable for the movements you will do, and you do not want to feel any restriction from your clothing on what your body wants to do.

I'm just starting skating and so far have just been hitching my skirts (since I don't even own any pants or leggings!) up above my knees so they don't restrict my movement and don't risk getting skates caught in them. But I know I should get around to getting some leggings otherwise I definitely see skinned knees in my future. :-) For my hands though I decided not to wear gloves, hoping the fear of cold/grazing ice will convince my subconscious to break my falls with my forearms instead - and hopefully avoid spraining/breaking a wrist. Not sure whether or not that works, so far every time I've fallen has been too fast to know what's happened until I see the bruises the next day!

I'm sooo confused😭 about what kind of socks should you wear to fit in the skate boots, nylon? thin or thick? socks tight? I usually go with super thick socks with rental skates but now I'm getting a pair of Jackson Mystique (I'm very excited about that) and I don't know what socks should I go with

Hi! I definitely recommend going to your figure skating pro shop or a place like target where they sell clothes, I got my socks from there. As for the type you should wear I recommend light, kind of tight tan skating socks. They sell them at skating pro shops and like I said places like Target just tan light skating socks

Hi and thank you, Julia! Proper dressing is #2 top question when skating (skates being #1). You didn't mention materials and fabrics for the clothes, so what would you recommend/suggest? 100% cotton? Special sport fabrics that soak off the sweat from your skin yet keeps the warmth? Brushed fabric (esp for pants)? Fleece? Or anything will work? What about differences going to indoor/outdoor rinks? What about socks? Would be nice to see part 2 for this video to answer all these.

  • @christinemeleg4535

Do not wear 100% cotton! It absorbs sweat and doesn't dry out. You will get chilled! Look for clothing that is a 'wicking " fabric, it keeps you warm, without getting chilled from sweat. Look in the hiking section of a sporting goods store, either in person or online. This sounds weird, bear me out, try equestrian clothing, it moves freely, wicks moisture and is resilient for riding falls. I no longer skate but still do ride.

Yeah when I am coaching I wear full fleece lined pants, and in the winter I also have fleece tights under the pants. We do get sooooo cold. Because we tend to be out there for hours and hours, and we aren't usually moving around as much as the athletes we are coaching. The cold really creeps in.

@@CoachJulia I second the request for sizes that will fit average and larger adults. The most popular brands stop at sizes that might fit older teens and slender people. Not everyone starts skating with a ballerina body! Women develop wider hips as we age, and the brands I've seen online just don't have the sizes for taller or older people. I am not plus size, but those specialized skating pants aren't available in a size to fit me. The max hip measurement for one brand (just checked) is smaller than the average American woman's hip size. One other request: Post sizes by hip measurements and inseam or inseam + 3" for over the heel. I have no idea what size I am in retail because it might be anything from S to XXL, depending on the brand. If there's a size chart, I can order by my hip size and inseam. As for pants for men, I haven't seen any! What have the men been using for skating gear? Most people don't have a person to sew custom clothing for them.

What I wear while figure skating: anything that fits over volleyball kneepads/elbow pads, wrist pads, tailbone/hip pads and a shock absorber headband. Go ahead and wipe out, you won't feel a thing (and look like Kim K in the process). I see girls take a real beating out there falling without padding, I don't get it! Figure skating is a contact sport, and your opponent is a cold hard surface that doesn't get hurt, so gear up!

I have a question: rn i don't have skates and I've been meaning to go the ice rink to try figure skating stuff but my rinks renting skates are only hockey skates, so is it possible that i could still do a few figure skater moves with hokey skates?

  • @sncnjcsmom6451

    @sncnjcsmom6451

You haven't had an answer, so if you still want to know, here's my learning-to-skate, I-am-not-a-coach answer: You shouldn't try jumps with hockey skates. That's dangerous, but the rest of the basic skating skills are the same for figure skating and hockey skating. Posture is little different, and emphasis on what skills are more important is different, but the basic movements of gliding forward and backward, stopping, turning directions, crossovers, and edge awareness are the same. All of these basic skills are required for both types of skating. So you can learn with hockey skates, absolutely. However, if it's possible to get a used pair of skates that fit you, your feet would probably be much happier than in any rental skates, hockey or figure skates. Rentals are sharpened irregularly, often have broken boot support, and typically are uncomfortable to wear unless you have 2 pairs of socks (just my experience). The big differences between hockey skates and figure skates are the shape of the blade - pick at front & long, flat heel for figure, rounded curve for hockey - and the boot's heel shape - higher for figure, flatter for hockey. People who start with hockey skates often trip on the pick when they switch to figure skates. Also, figure skates have 2 heel factors. The heel of the blade is longer and flat instead of rounded. (It's an ongoing issue for figure skaters to find a good skate tech who won't round off the heel!) The long, flat back of the freestyle figure skate blade stabilizes and supports landings. A dance blade will have a shorter blade at the heel, but the heel is still needed for dance moves than involve landing. Hockey skates have rounded heels, allowing quicker turns, less blade on the ice at any moment to increase speed, and easier stops. The boot of a figure skate has a high heel compared to hockey skates. This provides better balance on the knife edges while the skater is upright. Hockey players tend to bend low with shoulders forward and knees bent, a stance which is easier without a heeled boot, but they also skate with a stick in front of them that they use to manipulate the puck. Figure skaters stand with shoulders and back straight, using their upper extremities to create force during movements and to control balance. No sticks or pucks, but sometimes there's a partner in hand. HTH

At the beginning of each shot I clap my hands together really loud which creates an audio spike - this makes it easy to find the audio markers and synch them together. 😁

All the videos and articles is all about womans wear, but what about mens wear for figure skating? It's not only womans kind of sport :( Nobody tells what and how to wear for mens and this is one of the points why it's not too much mens in fig.skating :( If I'm men, I don't want to go to hockey istead of figure skating, because last one looks so cool! I cant even find adult leggings to training, nor jersey (all the sizes is for children) or even unitard Womans, girls, children... nobody else exists... But using common gym leggings on ice skates isn't too comfortable (short length, no water resistant, no fleece) :( The video is nice, but need more information about mens wear
