What to pack for my first archaeological dig? Commercial (CRM) Archaeology Toolkit : Rural and Urban

Hi Friends, Packing your tool bag for your first archaeological dig can be a bit tricky. I have split this video into two parts: Part 1 is everything you need for a research or rural job/a project where you can drive to site and back. Part 2 is the bare essentials which is good for Urban archaeology digs, Watching Briefs etc. Really for any situation where you will be travelling/moving sites a lot.
Part 1 00:00
Part 2 05:40

Hi Natasha, Since my last comment two years ago, I have now been on a couple of digs as a volunteer, and enjoyed them greatly. This video was in fact a great help in knowing what to take...

Really love seeing what's in different anthropologists' travel kits. Archaeologists obviously have their tool kits and field dress, but then cultural anthropologists gotta dress for interviewing folks, primatologists dressin' for time in nature, etc.

Indeed. When people see me walking in/out of a construction site, they do expect to meet an archaeologist haha. Glad you enjoyed the video :)

@@BehindtheTrowel yeah same for me. I research women's sports and when I'm at a sporting event with my notebook and pencil out people are surprised to find an ethnographer watching women's sports.

Might be handy to add a tool belt for quick access of most frequently used tools? Also hydration! Especially in hot climates (or summers...they are bound to get worse and worse, aren’t they...)

Surprisingly interesting Natasha, would like to see more of theses on daily lives of an archaeologist. Are there more to come on other tool bags and equipments that they use on biger sites?

Thank you. I will make a note of your suggestion. We could talk about equipment used on site by other contractors to help us with our archaeological works :)

Hello Natasha, I’m really enjoying your videos. I was just wondering what does a commercial field archaeologist do? I’ve never heard of it before and I want to look into all aspects of archaeology 💕

Hi Natasha, Very interesting video, and love seeing what an archaeologist might carry in the field. Something you didn't mention as they are probably provided by the company is a GPS.. I am guessing you use survey grade units rather than the typical consumer grade handheld recreational unit?

Hi Peter, great point. It varies between companies and site specifics. We either have a GIS/Survey team or we have archaeologists trained to GPS and/or Total Station on-site.
