What to look for in a Continuous Light for Food Photography

This is video number 2 of 3 in exploring continuous lighting for food photography. In this video, I discuss two essential things to look for when looking for a continuous light for food photography. There are definitely many more factors to consider, but I think across the board these two should be considered the most.

    How you only have 8k subscribers is beyond me. Literally in each and every one of your videos I learn something new. Thank you so much for demystifying lighting (and everything else) for the rest of us. Your videos should be in some sort of "Library of Alexandria" for photographers and cinematographers. Thank you Brandon, you are truly a hidden gem of YT...and hopefully not for long.

Thank you! I think you're right, with the amount of time I spend taking b-roll shots of the flashes, it makes sense to explain why I have them given how expensive they are. I originally bought them for reliability and consistency's sake in high-pressure conditions as I used to shoot weddings full time. When switching to food photography, I just decided to keep them.

    Another thing about the inverse square law is that the distance from the camera and the subject also apply. This is why if you're shooting in broad daylight, something way in the background can be noisy even at 100 ISO. It's because the amount of light reaching the camera from that object is many times less, and low enough that the minimum amount of photons needed to saturate a photo site beyond the read noise level, is not reached. Nothing that can really be done about it other than shooting bracketed, but it's one of those little facts that can explain why despite best efforts, noise can still be present even in the best of camera's.

    how about the lux comparison between panel leds and single source led like the Godox VL150 versus the GVM672S... I am having doubts about the lux stated in the GVM672S specs. I have that light and am thinking if I should get the Godox VL150 cause the GVM isn't bright enough for me at some situations...

  • @figandlight

    @figandlight

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey David, I'm not familiar with the GVM672S, but it looks like it has a lux output of 22000 at around 20 inches. that may sound good, but I'm thinking for farther distances it doesn't throw as much light well enough which might be why you feel skeptical about the light. I actually have the VL 200 and it's a great light, very bright! If you can pick up the VL 150, I'd say go for it, but in terms of how it compares to the GVM, I don't think I can say if it'll be better or not.

    I loved your video!! You made it so easy to understand, even using math!! Lol.... I'm a food blogger, who's not making any income yet. I've just started into this world of blogging and photography. So I'm planning on buying a cheap light for now, until I can make some money and upgrade. I found 2 light kits at Amazon that I'm really interested in buying... Could you help me with a question?? The two of them are 5600K, cri 96+, and use led lights, but one is lux: 3360/m and the other is 3960/m. I was about to buy the one with higher lux, but then I realized that it comes with a white diffuser, that is attached really close to the light, while the other one with lower lux is about $30 more expensive, but comes with a small soft box. The soft box is not one of those big ones, that are open wide, but maybe it's better than none at all?? I did find another one for the same price($150) that has those big difusers, but the cri is between 85-90. So I don't know which one would be better for me... All of them come with two lights and stand. For now I'll go with continuous light, because I'm planning on also making videos. Could you help me with this decision?? Thank you so much!!!! I'll put the link below, in case you want to check them out... And thank you so much again for the video!! I'll share it in the food blog comunity that I'm in! (We are more than 6.000 bloggers) I'm sure they'll like it too!! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QXRQ83V/ref=crt_ewc_title_dp_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A246LHV6G8MKKO www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077PZM382/ref=crt_ewc_title_dp_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3VCR7ULIQW54W www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KC5X5H4/ref=crt_ewc_title_dp_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2L2IBCOJNQSLR

    Hey Lilian! I would still go with the one with higher lux value. A diffuser close to the light doesn't necessarily mean it will give you softer light (if this is what you're going for), the most it will do is cut down the brightness even more. The advantage of higher lux values is it allows you to compensate for any factors that contribute to light loss like adding diffusers or gels or distance or if you need to bounce the light, which can cut brightness significantly, having a really bring light can help compensate for that loss. I'm not exactly sure what you're going for in looking for a light, but to cover all potential grounds, I would say to pick the light with the highest possible lux value and a high CRI. I wouldn't worry about which modifiers it comes with because it'll rarely give you the kind of light you're thinking about. The principle is that It's the size of the light source that creates soft light, which can easily be DIY'd or bought separately in terms of a scrim/diffuser. And as for the 85-90 CRI light, I wouldn't bother with it. Accurate colors in food photography I think is non-negotiable haha. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions! and thanks for giving me a shout out in the group! I really appreciate it.

  • @figandlight

    @figandlight

    3 жыл бұрын

    I've only heard about this light from other youtubers, but it seems like a great light! on BH it says it's around 4000 lux at 3m. The godox VL 300 says it's 77,000 lux at 1m which is equivalent to around 8500 lux at 3m, so if my math is right, the godox is more than twice the brightness and $250 cheaper than the Nanlite. It does seem the nanlite does win in the CRI category with a rating of 98 as opposed to 96 in the godox. But that difference is probably negligible. These are just estimates based on stats though! I've never tested this light so it may be much better than how I'm making it sound to be.
