I love the lighting for this somewhat moody video! When I started to feel overwhelmed, I started to pot like/similar plants together to create less pots to care for. This helped IMMENSELY. I also yeeted a few that had been causing me headache (because sometimes that's just the right anwser).

Figure out what you want to do, sort it out, and then do it well. Sit with the plants that bring you happiness and be honest with what you can manage.

Something i've noticed that you just helped me realize is that I have absolutely no plants on my desk and whenever I try to put one on there I end up moving it because it feels wrong/stresses me out. I really enjoy having a clear desk and i'm realizing that its because it allows me to have a space to enjoy my other hobbies without having to consider the wellbeing of a plant/outside stressors in my view.

These are just suggestions I came a cross in other channels. So some of the things people are doing to downsize are taking them to plant swaps, selling them, giving them away, repotting "like" plants in the same planter... example would be variegated planted together with a non-variegated plant of the same type or species. Another is to select a specific genera/types of plants to specialize in that have similar care requirements rather than keeping all the genera that require different types of care. Examples of this would be keeping orchids only, Hoyas only, aroids only, succulents only, etc. Select plants you enjoy but require less involved or complicated care if time is an issue. The number one thing, of course, to do is stop buying and avoid going to plant sites and "brick and mortar" places which would trigger or tempt you to buy more plants... unless it's to get supplies to care for the plants you already have.

I think it's natural to cycle through different hobbies. Most hobbies you can just store away in a box until you regain time and motivation for it. Needle felting, book binding, photography, you just put the things away and don't look at it for a couple of months. With plants you can't do that, and the result of being sick of plants for a bit looks much more dramatic than neglecting a different hobby for a bit. So, I think where my thought is going, is please don't feel bad when you get plant burnout. You gave some great tips Joy!

That's really insightful and true! With most hobbies, you can take a break without much consequence, but it doesn't feel the same with plants. I guess that's why plant burnout is so prevalent in the community 😅

I feel you in so many different levels. This has been happening to me for these past 6 months, it is absolutely overwhelming. Plants were outgrowing their pots and their spaces and I didn’t want to up-pot them because that would mean more growth in the future and *anxious sigh*. Also I started getting into pottery and that shifted my focus and my priorities, just as you mentioned with your hobbies. Two things have helped me this year: 1) create new plant spaces. Even if it is slightly different, some changes might renew your space and the way you interact with it. Have you thought about shelves? IMO floating shelves work great by unlocking new ways to display my plants without having something physically on the floor taking more horizontal room. And 2) I guess you see this one coming, downsizing. It doesn’t just only free up physical, visual and mental space, but also arranging the plants to give them to friends or sell them made me fall back in love with some plant chores and plants themselves. I hope this can be useful in any way. Keep the verbal processing going, we’re here to listen😊

I feel you on the space issue 😅 as someone who lives in a one bedroom apartment, I feel like I’ve become so limited in where I can put my plants :/ which sucks BUT at the same time I feel overwhelmed by the amount of plants I have. ESPECIALLY ones I’m dealing with that have issues going on (such as pests, anthurium issues, etc) and it all feels soooo… just too much 😩 idk. I’m so glad you brought this up bc this has been weighing on me recently.

When I moved back to Colorado from Texas 18 months ago I had to downsize due to housing costs. That being said, I purchased a very small house with lots of south And north facing windows. (Bedroom and kitchen. ) It also had a 12x16 sunroom with windows on the east and north and a couple of small covered porches for hanging baskets!! So yes I did buy with plants in mind, and a big yard for my two Weimaraners!! After randomly buying plants for 8 or 9 months I began to find the genre I really liked and do well with, and the genre I don't do as well with, therefore dislike! I gave away some, killed some (unintentionally!!) and sold a few. I also installed several coated wire closet shelves across windows in my bedroom and in the sunroom. I can place plants on top of the shelves, hang plants from the wire and the light comes through also. Now I try to only buy what I love, place all my hoyas in my bed room, my syngoniums and Pothos in the kitchen and living room where I also have several philodendrons. My succulents and cacti are on free-standing shelves on a very long table in my sunroom!! I'm still working thru the process but these ideas have helped me!! Good luck!! ❤😅🤞👍

Girl, I totally agree and understand everything you’re saying! Ive gone through cycles of burnout after having my 2nd son. The best tip I’ve learned is to at least water. Thats it, thats the base for a plant to live. I have gone maybe 4 to 6 months with just watering plants in place as i happen to notice them looking in need. I am constantly in a state of removing plants that no longer bring me joy or don’t thrive in my environment to which frees up some space for when i do find a new exciting plant. Ive found myself lately fine tuning my collection to plants i truly enjoy growing and are long lasting in my lifestyle. I trust you will find your way along your own plant journey. Thank you for making such great videos to enjoy! I love watching your videos and doing plant chores alongside! ❤

For me, because I bring plants in for the winter, I feel what you are describing during that time. Survival of the fittest! Spring makes me so happy because I can put a lot outside and make more room inside for those plants to grow! I buy plants….small ones….and of course I am not a perfect plant parent so I struggle with some and kill some…try as I may. I also find hanging plants and using rail holders helps spread the plants around more. Levels…floor, table, shelf, wall, ceiling. Lol!

Yeah I moved from a 5 bedroom to a one Bedroom apartment and I had to size down from 60 ish plants to 23 plants.. I had to get rid of all of the large ones because they weren’t going to fit. I kept my small ones and some cuttings of my favorite ones that I had grown out. I still only have 23 plants and I’m happy with what I have. I kept the ones that were special. I realized I could live without certain plants lol. It’s probably harder for you since you’re a KZreadr and you have to keep certain plants for your channel but it makes you feel really good when you have a place for each plant to make them look good and appreciate them.

This is exactly why I don’t want to over grow my collection. The “excitement” of buying plants out weighs my common sense at times knowing how easily it is to get burn out. Perhaps you need to have a plant sale so you can breathe again and not be overwhelmed so much. Take care!

I like the phrase “hobby oscillation” … but of course that is a good thing! It seems like plants fall in 3 tiers. The basic ones (deliciosa, gloriosum etc), super special (Thai constellation, doc block, bicolor, etc), and then everything else. I’ve been letting the everything else plants meet the great mulch bin in the sky….

whats helps me when i feel overwhelmed is to give temporarely some plants to friends of mine just the time to feel better. Sometimes i don't take them back because they felt in love with that plant and are better care parent plant as i could be in my difficult mood. Why not , They deserve them by the simple fact to have accept them just for not to let them die. Other trick I sometimes use too, i keep the only ones i really love, give to who wants by annonce in a free paper for second hand sells those i don't love anymore... and buy new ones just to have excitement back with plants i'm able to manage : no tricky, no easyrotten roots, no diva.

Well... I have a tiny attic flat with poor daylight and I can't explain to myself that I've had enough and don't have the space and that I need switch grow lights every day. I have more than 100 plants, about 95% of them are tiny and this is the only thing that saves me, which doesn't change the fact that I have to go through a plant detox 😅.

The best motivation to stop buying plants - minimazing risk of bringing pests with new green friend :D. Curently I am close to burn out. Dedicated space for plants like you mentioned in video - yes! I am trying to have as less as possible number of plants on my desk, because I want to have specific place to work. A few plants are located in front of my tv, which is anoying to move them when I want to watch something on tv. Thanks to getting rid of less loved plants I know I am ok with not having ceropegia, but I am hunting for pretty philo plowmanii - I regret selling the one I had :D. Other tips which are usefull in my case 1. One plant in, one plant out 2. Having planty wishlist so I have motivation to save money instead of stending random amounts on cheap cuttings or plants in big shops. 3. Try to buy stuff to make actual Collection happy like grow lights, better fertilizers etc. 4. Rearange space, similar to decicated space.

What a timely video for me. I have to do something about my plants as well. And it is the perfect season to do this. I have like 3 or 4 Syngonium White Butterflys that I will be combing into one pot. I also have a number of other species I will be doing that to as well. Another idea is to plant a vineing plant like a pothos at the base of say a fiddle leaf fig tree. AND....put some outside!! The season for putting my syngonium's outside is almost here and I can't wait! They do so well and love it under my covered porch. And I will probably be ditching some that did not do so well over winter. Time to just clean up the collections and get that mental clarity back. Best of luck to you!!

Oh gosh plant burnout is SO real, and I deal with it on the regular. Sometimes life just gets busy, whether that be with school/work or you're just mentally drained/anxious from life. One thing that helped me work through feeling overwhelmed was not doing ALL of my plant stuff in one day, all at once. Nowadays, I'll tackle one section/room a week (it'll max take at most 30 mins to take care of the section vs 2 hours for all of them). Most established plants can go 2-3 weeks between watering (sometimes even longer), so you don't HAVE to water every week. I liked your point about getting rid of plants that aren't bringing you joy and not serving anything other than stress LOL. Appreciated this style of video!

I recently got new mental health issues and caused me to have plant burn out. I was having joy for them anymore and it was too much to do, was more like a chore. I have away about Two thirds of my collection to a good planty friend, and held onto the plants that really brought me joy or like my statement plants. I also found plants being clutter was getting to me. How that I have simplified I have time for them and the ones I have look nice in there spots. It sucks. But u have to do what u have to do sometimes to survive and let ur plants survive if need be somewhere else
