What to do when you face big challenges

A year ago, it was becoming clear that I would have a new landlord and my studio space might need to change. I give my honest advice on what I learned over the past year and how to come back stronger.

6:07 - What’s wrong is you’re simply worrying Worrying is something most of us practice so well that we just move seamlessly into it but if you stop and think only two things happen when you worry: You worry and the thing that you’re worrying about happens anyway OR you worry and it doesn’t happen! So, basically, when you worry you worry needlessly. Sit down in the woods, there and write a list starting with your ideal situation then how you would achieve your ideal situation; if you can’t see how you’d achieve it then go on to your second best option and do the same and keep going until you hit upon a situation you can achieve and then forget about EVERYTHING else Until you achieve it. Safe in the knowledge that you won’t blame yourself or concern yourself about “what could’ve been” because you did the best in the situation you were in Many of us fail to do this (including me for TOO many years!) Simply because we can’t believe it could be so simple to approach ‘life’s little hurdles’ like that AND we’re so used to falling back into the worry rut simply because of we’re so used to doing that we think it MUST be the only way to deal with stuff…it AIN’T! My humble advice is, until you gain some sort of magical powers to bend reality around yourself(good luck with THAT KZread Channel!!) &/or manage to be the first human being to ever develop a third outcome to worrying beyond the first two I’ve just mentioned, above, you get on with itemising, compartmentalising, working on what you can do it and ignoring what you can’t I look forward to every video you will continue to put out

I lost my job last year, and had nothing to fall back on. It was very tight for a little bit, and I was completely thrust into the unknown. After about 6 months, I was able to find a new job in a different field that paid much more, and actually had benefits, which i never had before! I'm actually surprised that that even happened, but somehow it did. It turns out that being forced out of my job was probably one of the most positive changes that could have happened.

It's absolutely true. I had my space in an old building with lots of old, naked wood and a regular jam session once a week with up to 8 neighbors (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, violin, drums and on a couple occasions a drop-in accordion), one of which you've heard on recordings and possibly seen live. Also doing sound at an amazing local venue, but it was fleeting and there was not much commitment to really nailing anything down. My relationship ended and I moved a half-hour north to a cabin in the woods. The front room, overlooking a lake, became my control room, the living room became my live room and so on. I started writing and recording like a madman. Although it was added distance and tricky to find and reach I had a few people who couldn't wait to get back to my little cabin to let go and record some of the most hypnotic playing they'd ever done because the environment just made it flow and I had quickly found some sweet spots for sweet sounds. It's all in what you do with it :) You will no doubt flourish because you're extremely talented and confident in your knowledge and wisdom. Cheers to you and the mysterious future.

Can relate: in the last 3.5 years, I was diagnosed with an incurable disorder that's left me with a fraction of the feeling in my right hand and arm. Then COVID displaced me from a job I loved and finally felt like I was hitting my stride in, just a year and a half after taking a leap of faith away from a toxic job I was at for 17 years. Then, after almost two years of couples therapy that I was confident was working amazingly, my partner of 13 years and I split up. I left the home we'd been in for almost a decade, the single place I'd lived in the longest, the only home my youngest daughter had ever known...and the best studio room I'd ever had, that had been my sanctuary for all that time. The thing, though, is this: I've grown more as a human being in that time than I ever have in such a short time. I'm happier than I've been in ages. It doesn't make the rest not hurt, but how I choose to see things makes all the difference. Losses often are opportunities for gains that wouldn't have even occurred to you otherwise. ...and even though I do still miss the old room sometimes, I've kinda fallen in love with the new one and I'm more productive than I was before. I wish you all the best, Ryan, and I know you'll make the best of it. Keep up the good work!

It actually opens up possibilities for video topics. You have a very identifiable style, and I expect more interesting videos. I look at these videos like hanging out with a friend, talking about your favorite subject. So this is like your friend just moved into a new apartment, and it will be a new place to hang out.

I have sold all of my musical equipment. My employment insurance ran out after getting laid off from my job due to the pandemic. I was collecting since the 1980's. I feel completely lost and full of sorrow. The world is completely different now. Good luck on your musical pursuits!

Just want to send you some love. I hope you are able to find peace and keep going. If I could encourage you regarding gear...it can be like a library or pawn system - you sell it at a used price, and it's always available to you at used prices if you want it back. Obviously this doesn't take into account a collectors price that may have gone up. I know it's not the same, but I hope that helps a little.

I don't know you personally but ive watched your videos since the good old Warm Audio (stink lines logo versions!) videos. I would hate to lose a space but I know enough by now to know that you will rise above, Ryan. I think not only have you gotten better as a video maker and engineer, but you seem even a little different as a person. In a good way. I actually dig your home studio more than the space though I know its limited function-wise. I thought your videos from the cobbled covie era were so much better and cooler and defined you as a personality that people can like and trust. Like a friend in real life. So, I actually predict that you will not only rise above the stress and drama, but you will be better than ever. Passion is jogging music, and I know your passion will carry you through.

I have changed rooms atleast 6 times. I was allways excited when i changed spaces because i love acoustics. And making the best of a not ideal space made me feel good. Bedroom to bedroom mostly having to move to a different apartment. The amount of gear you have is another story though. But you will get trough it. Love your videos.

Seen so many artist spaces lost through being priced out of rentals etc. If anyone sets up in a cheap local area (where studios usually are) then try and buy it out wherever possible. Like the new situation though - most of your viewers will be in situations more like that that you find yourself in now. The process of making that work could be a good series of vids.

Each of us has some struggle, some fear, some looming sense of uncertainty about something, often several things, hopefully not many things - so it's good to see that you are digging through yours and elaborating them & tackling them with the same calm, articulate and intelligent spirit that animates your videos and populates this quite unique YT channel. Also, given your skills and the respect you have rightfully earned here, online, by being the opposite of an ego boaster or a disguised gear salesman/promoter, I am 101% certain that wherever your studio will be, whichever the location, building, room and lease, you are going to do fine. Stay strong, enjoy the ride.

I've been following this channel for a long time and it's always been a reference. Thanks for what you do! I'm really sorry about your situation but I'm sure that, as you said, you'll find a way to make things work! Also, it would be really interesting if you show us the process of make things work in a not so ideal space! I don't have a recording space and I do my stuff at home and I try my best, always following the tips I found on this channel, but I'm not a sound engineer as you are, so it would be great to see how you would work in a different situation! Greetings from Italy!
