What To Do If You Are Laid-Off - How to Cope with Job Loss

The world economy is taking a huge hit from the COVID-19 virus outbreak and creative professionals are being affected in large numbers with job losses and being laid-off as design agencies and corporate marketing departments contract. This video discusses methods you can use to emotionally process and psychologically cope with being laid-off. We have to remember that no matter how devastating this is to our personal and professional lives, we can and will bounce back from this natural disaster - it’s just going to take time and fortitude. #Jobloss

Wow. Same thing here. They let me know 2 weeks ahead of time also. Others who I know were let go the same day it's announced and no 2 weeks for them. I felt my heart is being stabbed. It's like my 9-year plus relationship with someone and that person just called and said she is breaking with me. 😭. Hang in there, bro. We will make it through.

I never really cared about a job loss. I support myself since my 17 years old and I always give 100% on a job, it's not like I don't want to work, and very often I recieved recognitions from my employer. It's just that I never cared about job loss. Sometimes I quited myself also. I worked so much different jobs in my life and I have so much different working skills that I can't even count them all. And also, I was always kinda happy when I quit my job or if the employer let me off 😁 That situation always symbolized to me a fresh begining and new opportunities, and that always made me feel happy 😁

Nice timing, Philip! Great advice! I was laid off last Friday from the photo/design job I'd had for 20 years. Our company is shut down until May, but who knows. Hit the ground running: contacted my freelance clients and lined up new work, launched a new website for my freelance business, started a daily photo blog, and plan to launch a podcast soon (not to make money, just to encourage people). Stuck here on our old farm in Maine with my dear wife. We've chosen to get creative and thrive. Yes, tough times, but a positive attitude is critical. I hope everyone stays healthy and safe until they turn the world back on!

Really great video, Philip! I love the clear steps and the gentle encouraging vibe. I was not laid off but I was stood down. I've got the feeling I might not be brought back though (toxic workplace, but still money). It does help to have someone else saying what many of us deeply know, but struggle to execute. I hope you're not being too affected and stay safe!

J, sorry to hear you have been stood down. But no shame in that these days. I know very few people who have not had their employment status affected. If the place was toxic (and I know we've talked about this before) it may be a blessing and open up your universe for something better to present itself to take it's place. I am a firm believer in that sort of kharma. Open yourself up to it and it will come.~ you stay safe too..

Thanks for the support. I have been working with the restaurant business for a long time as a freelancer. It was always protected from loss of work by the number of different employers at one time. And for printing, design and website development. One restaurant is very easy to close - the entire restaurant industry will never close - people will always eat. Risk sharing - several professions, several customers. But there was one moment, a black swan, who could do this and close all the restaurants in one moment. All I can do is do work on credit. You are right that there is time to tackle the portfolio, find new solutions. I do not want to stop because when all this is over, there may be a huge demand for my work at one moment, and I will be ready for it.

This is such a rough time for so many people. 7,000 dead in Italy. And many other countries over here in Europe on a similar path. Here's hoping everyone stays safe. I agree with Philip that this moment presents an unexpected opportunity for all of us to deeply reassess our lives and to pivot or transition in a major way, if necessary. For instance, if we take three months out to upskill or to get a new project off the ground, no one is going to question a gap in a resume or wonder why we aren't on somebody's corporate payroll somewhere. I've had half a dozen personal projects vaguely lined up for months and know that if I don't pull some triggers now I never will.

I completely agree with Philip's advice. I was released from my dream job a number of years ago. After my emotions settled down a bit the following thought came to me: "Is this an environment in which I can thrive?" The answer was clearly a resounding "NO". So I picked up the pieces and moved on to a much better place. Sometimes the harsh reality of an experience turns out to be the best thing that could have happened to you. Carry on and continue to move forward!

Hey Ave, Sorry to hear it. Take it from me, working out will DEFINITELY help with the negativity - AND - added bonus - it also helps a TON with creative thinking and ideation. So working out will also help you develop new ideas and approaches to what comes next! Best of luck with your next chapter. You never know, it may be the best thing that ever happened to you. I've been laid off 3 times in my career - and every single time my next gig was a vast improvement.

After 31 years in a job I loved I had to resign due to poor management. I am now grieving for my old self, my life etc. Don't want to whine or have a pity party. My confidence has gone to shit. Totally demotivated

Hey Ann, I'm sorry to hear it, but don't give up hope. It will take a while to process the grief (all 5 stages grief.com/the-five-stages-of-grief/) in my experience. But then you will need to embark on a new chapter - taking more direct ownership of your professional life - possibly as an independent. If you are a creative pro, I offer coaching if you are ever interested. You can learn more about it here: philipvandusen.com/oneonone

@@PhilipVanDusen Now, the world can be a nasty crazy place out there, we need a lot of courage and we need a lot of resilience after that, and we will fall down before we stand up… What really matters is the silence of the night in our conscience, when we are alone. We cannot control what happens but we can use what happens. We have so much reserves of love and support inside us, if we can just remember that in our mind and move on.
