What To Do About The 18 Month Sleep Regression

The 18 month sleep regression is very real, and often can result in early morning wakings, shorter naps and night wakings as well! At 18 months old your child is no a full fledged toddler, so without having to cry it out here is my personal checklist of how to navigate the 18 month sleep regression!

I had to come back and say thank you for that last tip! Our baby slept amazing from the beginning until a year and a half in. Not terrible, but it became more of a struggle to get her to sleep and keep her from waking in the early morning. It was selfishly hard letting go if the head on the shoulder sway, but in the week since we have been doing goodnights in the crib, we have had short bedtimes and no night waking.

Watching this as my 18 month old loses his mind in the other room for bed time! Will literally wake up randomly and scream bloody murder! I had NO idea about no big bottle before bed! And so glad you mentioned play before bed because I have been nervous that I shouldn’t allow him to be his goofy funny self RIGHT before bed! Definitely going to try these tomorrow!

I wanted to cry while watching this. I was doing everything wrong and wondering why my son is acting this way. He hates nap, don't want to sleep at night. At night he sleeps for 9 hours max. Wakes up at night and then I have to carry him around to help him sleep. Thanks for this video, this opened my eyes. My boy hates most of his meals, and live on milk alone.

For my 18 month old, we have his routine, give him kisses and lay him down with his lamp on. Usually when we putting him into crib, he leans towards it and says "nite nite gnight" and we turn off the lamp after he's in. Works like a charm!

My daughter has always been generally a good sleeper. By the time she was 6 months, she was sleeping alone in her crib all night long. Then she hit 17 months, and would wake up crying bloody murder. No matter what I did, she wouldn’t want to sleep in her room. These lasted 5 weeks. I was going crazy until I found hit video! I learned that I was treating our nighttime routine as if she was a little baby as opposed to a toddler. I now give her milk 1 hour before bed in a sippy cup, do her bath time routine, and then we read 3-4 books together. These entire time I’m telling her that she will go to sleep in her crib alone and that mami will go to her own room to sleep too. I also added 2 stuff animals to her crib. I turn off the lights & turn on the sound machine and leave the room. The first night she cried for 1.5 hours. I went in twice to comfort her. Then the last 3 nights, she cries for 30 seconds and immediately goes to sleep ALL NIGHT LONG! Thank you!!!!! I feel like a new woman

My previous great sleeper got an ear infection and was getting her molars at the same time around 17 mos. I was going to get her, bringing her to my bed and helping her to calm down before bringing her back to her bed. Obviously at first she was waking up in pain but it kept going on after everything cleared up. Finally I realized it was me amd just decided to put her down and if she cried, set a timer for 5 minutes while I let her cry amd go on only after 5 minutes and lay her back down without saying a lot. It worked. The first 2 nights we probably did the 5 minute timer for 2 or 3 rounds. After that she started sleeping through again. It was really hard to stay strong through that but we did it!

Hi Becca. One question regarding sleeping in the crib: We transitioned our now 16 months old from crib to a floor bed when he was 8 months old. Then we sleep trained him. He had been sleeping great in the floor bed until recently. Should we also consider getting him back to crib even though he’s very used to his bed and not tying to get out on his own when waking up? The issue we face is frequent wake up at night and early rise. He started going to daycare full time recently so we suspect it’s an separation anxiety thing and has been providing comfort by going to his room, saying mellow words whenever he wakes up at night, trying to reassure him. But I’m also concerned it’s ruining the results of sleep training. Will definitely try the cuddle time tip but wondering about the crib part. Thank you!❤

I have a sleep trained toddler and we are doing most if not all of these tips and follow the 17-36 month schedule, but all of a sudden my 17 month old has been waking up after 1.5 hr for her nap and not going back to sleep, this seems to impact her night sleep as well. We put her down at the scheduled time after bedtime routine and she'll be quiet for 20-30 mins then all of a sudden she's humming and singing for 30-40 mins before falling asleep but waking up every few hours. What am I doing wrong or is there a guide I can purchase to help with this?

Hi Becca! Love your tips. But, what do you recommend when you’ve had a great sleeper then boom 20 month toddler hits the regression of waking multiple times at night. We’ve tried different methods (staying in the room at a distance, checking in and even the crying it out). But, she’s become super clingy in general and screams to no end where she eventually starts coughing and throws up. There’s no soothing unless we pick her up and put her in our bed.

My sleep-trained-18mo just started having a major regression at both nap and bedtime (except on weekdays at daycare, thank god). So even if I put her down within an appropriate wake window which is around 7:30-8, she stays up and continues crying for hours and hours (no joke she has been crying for 2+ hours straight and we ended up giving in by laying in a crib until she falls asleep). At some point she won’t be able to sleep independently due to being overtired. As much as I want to be consistent and do not want to reinforce her behaviour with a new habit, this is mentally draining and not healthy for my LO imo. At what point can I compromise and use different strategies?

Hello. I have a sleep trained 20-month old going through a sleep regression as of a few days ago. He has been sleep trained since 7 months old. I have been trying to let him cry it out but he has been taking 2 hours of screaming to fall asleep and then wakes up an hour later and does another 2 hours of screaming before passing out to the point where he has lost his voice this morning. To help him, last night, I walked in and held his hand and he started falling asleep then I left. When he woke up again in the middle of the night I went in after an hour of him screaming and this time I just sat on the recliner and that was enough for him to fall asleep again, just knowing that I am there. My question is, does my going into his room in order to help him through this difficult regression cause long term issues and become a long term habit for him? I just can't see myself letting him cry for a total of 6 hours in 1 night and him waking up with no sleep and no voice. I used to tolerate an hour of screaming but now it is getting out of hand. But I also do not want him to become dependent on me walking into his room in order for him to go back to sleep.

Hey, Ashlea! We recommend dropping the bedtime bottle cold turkey, and any bottles at night! If you choose to do this, we also recommend doing this while implementing our Toddler Sleep Program. This program will give you a 3-week road map and plan for teaching your little one how to sleep 11-12 hours all night (and for naps), independently, without bottles or props! If you need help with your little one's current schedule or have more questions about the training process, please reach out to my team at support@littlezsleep.com and they will happily assist you with any and all questions you may have! 💛

I pick my 18 mos. old granddaughter up from play school 3 days a week at 12 noon. They feed her lunch and she's had a good 3.5 hours of activity so when she gets in my car she falls asleep for the 20 minute ride home. However, she will wake up once I unbuckle her from her car seat. The past week I'll bring her in my house and tell her it's still rest time, but I'm rocking her and hoping she'll doze off and I can put her down for another 40 minutes. It doesn't work, lol. She's ready to play again. Should I still try and get her to continue sleeping for another 40 minutes, or is a 20 minute nap in the car seat enough? Maybe I should let her get some more energy out and then put her down for a solid hour nap around 3 p.m.?

Hey! Great question! If she is falling asleep in the car, she will not want to go back to sleep when you get home. I recommend having 60-90 minutes more of play time before trying for a nap again to rebuild her sleep pressure! If you would like more info or more insight on this, feel free to email in to us at support@littlezsleep.com and we would love to help!! 💛 Becca

That's exactly what I've done and that, plus your nap technique has worked out beautifully getting her a solid 1-1.5 hour nap in around 3 p.m.! Thank you!

Thanks so much Becca! My toddler is sleeping only about 1 hour 15 minutes during the day and waking between 5:30am and 6"00am rarely, 6:15am. We are trying to shift his bedtime back from 6:45pm to 7:30 or 8:00 because he was a consistent 11 hour sleeper. Only thing we do of the things you mentioned in the video that I will change today is the cuddle moment! If I take him outside before nap he gets drowsy in the stroller. HELP! We are so lost!

Hey Chris! A couple things I would check: is the room 100% dark, when he wakes early from nap give him time to fall back to sleep, and have nap right after lunch!

Great advice, but normally at 18 month toddlers also have separation anxiety where they want their mum or dad. Waking up in the middle of the night asking for parents. How do we deal with this?

Great question! If your little one is looking for you to helpful them fall asleep, I would recommend teaching them how to fall asleep independently. Once they are falling asleep independently, you can do leave and checks if there are any night wakings.

Hi Becca, what a great video. We have struggled with our now toddler, sleep, ever since she was born. I got into the habit of nursing to sleep... then tried sleep training during the fourth month sleep regression that almost killed us lol we couldn't stick to it. Now she is almost 16 months, and about six weeks ago i decided NO MORE BOOB to fall asleep. I wanted freedom. It was time for daddy to put our baby to sleep. So... she complaint, cried, screamed, but here we are.... now she falls asleep on her own. The complaints lasted mmm... maybe three days? She learnt so fast. It was hard... I can see in retrospective the mistakes I made, but you know how it is... nobody teaches us how to parent. Anyways, when I made the change, I followed your guidelines. AND IT WORKED! HAHA YES!! oh, also, when we fixed nap time with no boob..... THE NIGHT SLEEP GOT FIXED AS WELL! now she sleeps through the night. WHAT? we can't believe it. It was so hard... and now we are here. Anyways, I love your videos. Also - YOU ARE TOTALLY RIGHT ABOUT LUNCH GAP - I have noticed this as well. Now she goes straight from the high chair to her bed LOL. Mommy can clean up after haha. Best for you

@@littlezsleep Hi there, I wonder - when to change the baby? Before lunch? Because my 15mo twins usually go on the potty straight after lunch and (usually) poop and then I put them in the crib. This takes about 15 mins. However for over a week the naps and nigth time have a been major struggle, screaming, circus, throwing their toy cat out of the crib and crying for it etc. I tried to put them on the potty before lunch but it hardly worked and then they pooped in the crib without falling asleep, and with screaming until I came to change them... I wonder if you could give me some directions or whether you advice twin parents where another baby is another factor when it comes to sleep strategies etc. Thanks a lot, Becca!

Breastfeeding your child is not the same as bottle feeding so you can’t compare the two. And I’m not saying there is anything wrong with bottle feeding or formula feeding etc at all. A child needing to be breastfed to sleep and waking up to feed in the night at that age is completely biologically normal and healthy. So to say that they are not a baby anymore and don’t need that is actually inaccurate and is more about a desire from the parent to get more sleep, which is fair enough but let’s not pretend that it’s because the toddler doesn’t need that anymore. The world health organisation recommends children breastfeed up to 2 years and beyond so just something to be aware of and no mum should feel they need to stop because their child doesn’t need it anymore

Hey Mama! Thanks for sharing your heart with me! The wonderful thing about parenting is the freedom to make decisions for our own families based on your desires!! So great that you have been able to breastfed for so long! Way to go, mama! We are all here cheering each other on! 💛Becca

My girl has been going to sleep on her own for months now and it’s been great but now she’s hit this regression and screams when I put her down. She also wakes up early in the mornings and I feed her before putting her back in to go back to sleep. She used to go right back to sleep but now she has been staying up and crying 😭 I breastfeed so I’m going to try pushing the time I feed her before bed back so it’s not right before bed, and wait till after I put her down to turn off the lights and everything with her. 🥲 wish me luck! I just want her to stop waking up at 4am and now screaming bloody murder everytime she gets put down!

Update for the first day: nothing changed at night, she still woke up, and today I tried feeding her right before laying her down for her nap and she has been awake over an hour in the crib either playing or crying 🙃
