Sleep Training made easy with the Ferber Method
Sleep training made easy with the Ferber Method!
First and foremost, This method is not for everyone, if it causes parents too much stress or anxiety you do not have to do it. The goal of the method is to teach the child to self sooth with reminders that “mommy and daddy are always here.” It is not meant to just let the child cry it out, or to be cruel. Use your best judgement, no one knows your child better than you.
With that said, Almost all parents of young infants are in need of more sleep.
In this video, we REVIEW a popular sleep training method, the Ferber Method. The Ferber Method teaches babies to self-soothe by allowing the child to cry for a predetermined amount of time before receiving brief comfort from the parents to remind the child they are not alone. Overtime these intervals slowly increase.
We discuss the reasons why sleep training is beneficial for the health of both the infant and the family unit.
Sleep training will ultimately lead to better quality, consistent sleep for your child which is necessary for proper infant growth and development. And adequate sleep in adults is linked to lower levels of anxiety, stress and proper weight management.
We also review why the best age to sleep train a baby is between 4-6 months of age, when infants are capable of self soothing but before they can sit up.
Check out our video on sleep training using the Ferber Method!

Did this with both my kids. My daughter was a hard nut to crack but by 12-15 months she was sleeping 10 hours just fine. Now she's 3 y 8 m and is still a great sleeper. My son is now 8 months and I went from co sleeping and waking every 2-4 hours for feeding to sleeping alone in his crib for 11 hours in just 2 days with this method. The first night was painfully horrible. The second night he seems to understand a little better. The third night it was as if he discovered how wonderfully glorious a good, long peaceful sleep is. I set him in his crib, he makes himself comfortable and goes to sleep. I am so relieved. I wake up the next morning ready to be the best parent I can be. 10000% needed. Naysayers just don't know better 💯
Thank you so much for keeping it simple yet explaining everything so well. Every other video has just left me with more questions but after listening to this I’m feeling confident and ready to help my baby when he’s old enough. Again THANK YOU!!

I just tried the "no cry" method and it made my baby worse. It was to stay in the room with her, but to her it was like 'why are you here but not interacting with me'. so I switched the method I was using mid way during a sleep session and did this and my baby went down after the third check in. And she wasn't crying as hard either. Each baby is different and I can already tell my baby likes this one more.

Omg the no cry method kinda sucks, at least for my baby. I'm going to try this method and hope for the best. But I have a question, what if after the 3rd check in, or even a 4th or 5th, the baby is still crying heavily?...I'm worried that I might give in after a while. Like how how many check ins should do?...😢 I'm running on little to no sleep here..

I’m honestly so so shocked. I already notice a huge difference in my 1 year old son. Let me just say a few things before anyone thinks I’m jumping the fence here lol: My son is FULLY breastfed. All throughout the day and all throughout the night. He wakes up about 4-6 times a night to breastfeed and throughout the day he is always following me around and BEGGING at my knees for a feed about every 1-2 hours. My milk production has kept up with his needs of breast milk. This method however has calmed him down about bedtime. After 2 times of doing the 10 minute intervals he’s quieted down quite a bit and has gone to sleep on his very own for the first time. Im IN LOVE with this method. Thanks so much for this helpful video!!!

Great, did he still get up to feed at night or sleep through the night by himself? My daughter doing same as him, always breastfeeding every 2 hours even at 7 months.
Hiscock led one of the few long-term studies on the topic. It's a randomized controlled trial - the gold standard in medical science - with more than 200 families. Blogs and parenting books often cite the study as "proof" that the cry-it-out method doesn't harm children. But if you look closely, you quickly see that the study doesn't actually test "cry it out." Instead, it tests two other gentler methods, including the camping out method.

All I know is that my husband and I have barely slept in months and the consequences of that is our health going down hill, health which we need to look after children, and also our tempers/irritability levels have went up causing us both to become very snappy and impatient with our 3 year old who is at an age where he struggles to regulate emotions. Right now, psychologically, he is much more likely to be impacted by our sleep deprived personalities over a prolonged time than our 6 month old is by having to do a bit of crying for a few nights. So I think we really will have to try this...although we are in the same room as the baby still so not sure how we'll to make it work.
Helped big time,thanks.
I know this is kind of off topic, but this really sheds light on why long periods of parent leave can improve health outcomes. As a teacher, I get 4 weeks of paid maternity leave. So hard to go back to work when the baby is so little!
Hi there. Thank you for this video. A few quick questions: 1. If the baby is crying because of gripe or gas, do we pick the baby up or not to relieve them? 2. When we go in for the 2 or so minutes to let the baby know we are around, do we stay until the baby has calmed down or do we only stay for a couple of minutes and leave whether the baby has calmed down or not?
So glad where i live we get a whole year with our little baby !
Thank you this is really helpful to prepare sleep training.
Starting Ferber tonight at 8 months, I tried to start a month or so ago but couldn’t take the crying. Fingers crossed. I wished I started earlier because now he’s sitting up
This is going to work for some people, and not for others. Then, for all those it works for they are going to tell everyone "Woohoo, do sleep training" but actually, babies are not robots, and this method just won't work for all. A good teacher presents all/both sides of a subject.
Thank you for the video. I'll have to start sleep training soon... I don't want to but my husband worries that I am not sleeping, and yes, he is getting all kinds of advice from his friends that I don't agree with. Maybe I'll give this method a try.

The only thing I don't agree with is not breastfeeding in the middle of the night. Formula is heavier and doesn't need a middle of the night feed but breastfeeding needs an extra feed. Once they are eating three meals a day and snacks it is less crucial but still encouraged by breastfeeding specialists

@@rcg224 I first started with checking in 2,5,10,15,20 mins. When I noticed that was not working. I stopped checking in so often and timed 15 minutes from initial time of putting in crib. If he was still crying after 15 mins I’d take him out and reset. Start over check diaper, feed/nurse, cuddles, read a book or let him do some tummy time. When I saw signs of him being sleepy again we’d try again. It’s not easy at all and it breaks my heart still hearing him cry but it helps your mental health tremendously!
This is amazing information, thank you both for sharing. We have a 3 month baby, and it’s a struggle to put her to sleep or put her to take a nap.
My husband and I we’re desperate so we started this method 3 weeks ago with our 8 month old baby The first 2 nights were very hard, but the third night she cried just a little bit. Since the fourth night she is been waking up once. She doesn’t sleep the 10-12 hours in a row but at least she is not waking up every 2 hours as she used to do. Every night since we started the training I put her in the crib and she doesn’t cry and in about 10-15 min she finally falls a sleep. My husband and I were skeptical about this method but in our experience it worked out.
Hi! My baby is 5.5 months and for the last 2 nights Ive trying ferber but I chicken out after a couple of checks in as I can't cope with the crying... However I know I need to do it as my baby is waking minimum 5 times every night And I feed him to sleep every time😴😴
Hello, I loved how you explained the method in the video. Will this method work on babies that are nursed to sleep? My baby just turned 5 months.
I think you misspoke at 6:57. From what I have read about Ferber, you do not restart the 3, 5, 10 time sequence throughout the night. It is 3,5,10 and then 10 onward for the rest of the night. Right?? Otherwise this is a great video and I was going to show it to my grandparents to get them on board but I think that error would throw them off.
What about naps during the day? Would you recommend doing the same process or is it ok to let them sleep in your arms/lap during the day?
Finally, great and to the point video! Our baby sleep in our bedroom, what should we do when he cry in the meddle of the night?
This video is really informative - I am hoping to try this method so that we can have a consistent bed time. At the moment the baby only falls asleep when being cuddled.
How do you guys not have way more subscribers?

Because not every wants or needs to sleep train and not everyone agrees with it
I have an 8 month old who sleeps through the night, but our night time routine to get to sleep isn't working anymore. It's taking up to 2 hours to get him to sleep. We have been feeding him to get to sleep and letting him fall asleep in our arms and then transitioning him to the crib. I know we need to move away from feeding to sleep, I'm just nervous about him crying 😭
Is this possible with twins that sleep in the same room? I tend to pick up one and move out of the room so I dont wake up the other. Should i only use the method if they are both crying? Of course, only if I know that they don't need their nappy changing/to be fed/ or not ill etc
must be nice to have a nanny and grandparents helping. wouldn't know anything about that
How long to you continue the process of leaving and coming back before you pick the baby up and try again later? One hour, two hours or until they just finally fall asleep?
Thankyou for this amazing video! A few questions ! We live in a small apartment and his crib is in our room. How would this method work? His bed time is at 8 pm. So for the first few hours we can leave the room as the video says to. But When we are already asleep in our bed, how would this work? ALSO, do we do the same for naps?
Hi! Thank you for the info! Can you please name the studies you are referring to? Or a link? Thanks!
Starting tomorrow with naps! Wish me luck 😢
your video was straightforward! Im in day 3 of this method for my 9 month old baby(she was i month premature) and I actually carry her once at night when 5 min wait is over because she cries uncontrollable(sounds different then her other cries) but I only do this one time, I do not carry her at her naps or at bedtime just that once at 12-2am in the morning, do you think this will ruin my sleep training? she still falls asleep at naps but Going to day 4, I feel like theres still improvement even if I do this
You stated to keep checking in until the baby’s falls asleep.. well what happens if the baby doesn’t fall asleep? Do you let the baby cry all night long and keep checking in until sunrise? At what point do the subsequent check ins should stop and know that the Ferber method is not working? I tried the Ferber method for 3 consecutive nights and my baby cried for 3.5+ hours until I gave in because apparently we’re supposed to “stop the check ins when the baby falls asleep”.
Two questions. Do you replace the pacifier ? Also do you also do this for naps ?
Can you try this method for naps? Or is there a better method for day sleeping ?
Amazing info, I’m starting my 5 month old into the sleep training I’m just not sure how many hours her naps should be? It’s ok if she naps for two hours and the wake time is also around that 1.5 - 2 hours? I’m aiming for a bedtime around 7pm.
Thank you for this video, my granddaughter is 7 1/2 months, I wish we had found this sooner, she seems to go the bed ok in the evening but its the naps that are so hard, do you recommend doing the same method for nap time? or Any recommendation would be greatly helpful. Thank you
Do you do the same thing for naps or is it okay to rock them to get them down for those?
Can you tell as what doth rocking a baby at age of 2 week or so may bring to the child .
Really helpful info. A question I have is should I start this if my baby sleeps though the night? My baby is 4months and has slept though night since about 6 weeks. I do rock/feed her to sleep. I’m wondering if I should wait till becomes an issue sort of if ain’t broke don’t fix kinda thing. Am worried will mess with her good night sleeps. But also worry should maybe try now as may be better to do before starts waking in night and can’t settle
Great video, just wondered if you could clarify something. If the baby wakes up in the middle of the night do you go through immediately and check them and then start with the intervals or do you wait for the first time interval before going through at all?

You wait for 5 minutes and see if they can self soothe back to sleep. If not then go back in and comfort them for no more than 1-2 minutes. Then leave the room.
This was so helpful!! Do I do this with naps as well?
Thanks for this video. Question, My girl is 5months and sleeps on her tummy, should I start the training by placing her on her tummy, or do i switch to placing her on the back? Thanks
I have a question - we plan to start this training tomorrow, so I'm interested in how to behave when it comes to afternoon sleep?
Love the video and am very excited to start once my son turns 4 mo. 2 quick questions that I haven’t seen answers to in the comments yet: 1. Do I absolutely have to stop night feedings or could I still feed once during the night, then put baby down awake and do Ferber again? Or do you recommend never feeding at night? 2. He’s sleeping in a SNOO in our room right now but we want to transition him to his crib in his room (door connections our bedroom) and sleep train at the same time ideally. Cold turkey. Would you recommend? THX so much, you guys are super sweet and reassuring!

I think it’s confusing for babies if sometimes you feed them when they wake up and sometimes you don’t. I would recommend stopping night feeds. And i would do naps in the crib for a few days before you sleep train to get him acquainted with the crib and then do the sleep training
Thank you for the video. May I have a question please? My baby will not stop crying when I try to calm him down like patting, shushing, even picking him. He won't settle and keeps crying till I give him a bottle for comfort. What should I do in that situation?
What do you do when baby tolls on their tummy and cannot roll back ? Do you go in and place them back? My baby does this a lot and I don’t know how it will affect the sleep training. Also - baby doesn’t eat enough during the day ( maybe 14 oz-17 oz)so he needs 2-3 night feeds or he ll wake up every 1 h . What do you recommend?
I give you permission to love your baby. Pick up and hold your baby. It’s instinctual and natural. Love them, sing to them, comfort them, be with them.♥️
I worked in a day care using this method in a very distorted way. Putting babies to sleep for times during the day when they were not tired and not in consistency with the parents methods and leaving the babies crying for hours without checking. I do not like or believe in this method. I understand and do not judge the family who needs and want to use it. But it needs to be done the right way
Thank you for the information! We are looking into sleep training for our second baby. He generally sleeps pretty well at night but often wakes up and needs us to give him his pacifier in order for him to put himself back to sleep. Is that going to hinder the self soothe process? Also, how would we implement sleep training for naps? He only naps on us or in his swing (which I know is unsafe and I hate doing it!) so we really need to get him to nap in his crib! Any tips?

This is literally my life 🙄
My baby is 4 months and i want to start sleep training her, but i have a couple of questions. What hour should i put her to bed, for me i think that 20.00 is the perfect bed time, but i usualy have the last feeding at 22.00, is that a problem? Can i put her to bed at 20, use the ferber method, and at 22 can i feed her in her sleep? Because i think 20 to 5 or 6 am is a long time with no food. The second question? Can i change her at night? For example now at about 2 in the morning, she usualy starts to move in here sleep, i change her and the she is still. The third question, can i use a pacefire or the hole purpuse is for her to sude herself without any outside help. And the final question, my baby is very tempermental and when she starts crying she goes into a frenzy and she starts shaking if we dont pick here up, is it posible that we could harm her if we try this method?
When do you transition the baby into their own room? Does keeping them in your room (in their cot) make it harder for them to sleep and resettle by themselves ?
How do you do the Ferber method if babies crib is in the same room with your or it is in a shared sibling room?
When you go back in do you turn on the light? Also do you check for dirty diaper and change it if needs be?

Always change a dialer if it needs changing. No sleeping through the night worths diaoer rash that could really make a baby uncomfortable an uncooperative further on anyways.
This worked great 36 years ago with my boys , it just didn’t have a name.
Hi doctors, for baby who flips immediately the time we put down, how can we sleep train with Ferber? Let him cry tummy down or flip him back? Thank you
I had to research on how to put my baby to bed after suffering from back pains from rocking my 15 pounds 3 month old by to bed every now and then
Ok so when baby wakes up in middle of night you reset the times so start again with 2, 5, etc, yes?
Would this work for naps? My baby will not nap during the day unless he's attached to me in a carrier. He's only 3 months so I can wait another month or two. Everytime I've tried putting him down for a nap he wakes up either right away or 10 minutes in and then just cries and cries and cries. Hes slept amazing at night pretty much since birth so my issue is mainly with naps
Hi, thank you for the great and simple guide. I have two questions though. Is it okey to put the baby down with pacifier? And my baby is four months and I swaddle him at night. Is it ok?
does it work with room sharing?
Hi there Dr's does this method work for afternoon naps too?
Thank you for sabering this. I have a 3 month old and my husband and I are thinking about sleep training out baby at 4 months in her crib. She takes all her naps on her crib unless we’re on the go. I know doctors don’t recommend babies to get out of parents room until 6 months. Is it safe to sleep train in their own room since 4 months?
Hi! I’m wondering if your advice would change for an older baby I.e 11 months old who stands up in her crib if we leave the room. Does this mean she isn’t tired enough yet? Do I help her see the bed ? Lay her down if standing? She won’t sit on her own and continue crying staring at the door for rescue.
Help!! My 5 month old wakes every 30min to an hour ALL night! I’m trying Ferber but my baby usually falls back asleep on his own after less than 5min of crying each time, but how do I get him to stop waking up every 30min. I only go in twice to feed him and the rest of the night I let him self sooth but it’s still constant wakings! What do I do?!
So AAP recommends baby sleep in the same room until 1 year. Can you do this in the same room as the parents?
And then the same method you apply during the day naps right?
It kills me to imagine not feeding my baby throughout the night. He’s a chunky boy at 4.5 months so he’s not wasting away, but man I’m almost in tears just imagining it! Also not that you answer anyone’s amazing questions, but maybe someone will see my comment who has an idea.. my boy started teething at 3 months, he’s 4 months 3 weeks, & a week ago popped his 2nd tooth. He’s still going through a bit of the pain atm but slowly getting better as it makes its way through. Would I wait to start this method until they’re both fully through. First one is almost finished, maybe another week, and 2nd one would still have 3-4wks maybeee to fully come through. Thanks anyone who sees this 😂❤
