Inn my D&D group the Celestial Warlocks patron is a Coatl who sees it's end coming in the days to come and seeks out ways to finish it's celestial mission. So far the player only sees endless white coils in their dreams and wakes up with colored feathers in their dwellings. Sometimes it gives nudges or pushes towards a goal in the form of day dreams but the player has yet to speak to it on even terms. Theyre trying their hardest to push the Coatl to communicate with them but so far? nothing.

This is what happens when you build the world around the players and not the players around the world. If a 1st level edgelord want's to pick a fight with a 4th level mercenary fighter let him get put back into his place, that'll learn him. Also, a dungeon master should never give random loot, he should always give out what would make sense and only give out magic items when they would make sense to be in a monster's possession or found in a dungeon. I'm sorry but the fact that magic items just seem to grow on trees in the Forgotten Realms Campaign setting is one reason why I dislike playing in it, also Ed Greenwood, just the fact that Ed Greenwood created it would put me off of it if nothing else did; that guy is a deviant and a half.

Society, business, and our technological existence is our primary evolutionary force right now. Nope, not necessarily. Ahriman and Jazirian created whole world from raw unshaped chaos, which is easier to change/affect than defined/created worlds. Then fought over where to place centre of universe and lost a lot of power. Then people (all inteligent races) started to belive in gods, some where created from concepts, some ascended from mortals. They have a LOT of power INSIDE already established worlds, inside their aspects of influence. In my opinion if we let average god fight Jazirian/Ahriman, god would win, however if he would even be able to finish of one of the serpants is dubious to me. Still some Elder evils have powers that render gods weak or even useless. But great serpants are not gods, so they are unaffectes. That one time Asmodeus (Ahriman) single-handedly beat one of the Elder Evils, which killed many GODS, and then imprisoned him. I wounder what maner of artifact could one create from blood of Ahriman ruinnig in thick rivers inside deep fractures of Ninth layer of 9 Hells, Nessus. Of course if you were not eaten by atheis-eating revengeful great serpant.

@@LordMortanius A deity's power is not only dependent on how many worshipers they have but also how intense their worship is and how broad their portfolio is. A god of death (Nerull for this example) is understandably not going to be very popular with the average person, but all mortals are doomed to die (barring a few exceptions) and that happening on a constant and multi-planar scale every moment of every single day gives him more than enough power to achieve greater deity status. Why would one spend time with the Lizardfolk, who fundamentally do not value the same things, when there are elves, Dragonborn, and Aarakocra they could be exchanging knowledge with?

The coutal could be learning about an ancient ruin in the area and while they are at it are helping the lizard folk against the profane aboration that would be the nearby yaunti cannibles and their constant barrage of dark magic, curses, and bio weapons. yes their time together would be short but the lizard folk would still possibly see the coutal as a potential ally that might help if they call enough to it. It wouldn't sell. D&D lore books have never historically sold well which is why WoC cut back a lot on fluff. D&D is a game system. People want to play the game and not read a ton of lore they will never need or use. Most DMs homebrew or modify any so-called canon. They only need a little bit of lore and then create their own lore. For these videos, it is fine to go ultra nerdy on lore if a DM or player can pick up an idea. The campaign actually ended on a high note, with several characters even finding ways to help save the world they ruined in a way that furthered their goals. I'm actually running a sequel legacy campaign set 200 years after it, and they're eating it up.

You didn't state it's profound strength, and command with the use of polymorph. This is one of the main reason that Couatl's are actually so ridiculously rare to find out there in the world. They are in part so rare, because they spend a incredibly tiny amount of their life existing in it's "natural Couatl Dragon state". A party could in fact have met comparatively large numbers of Couatl! Perhaps even befriending one at some point, though they just knew it as a particularly hepful NPC, that was always super eager to hear all about the parties exploits, loving to listen to every detail about each individual person's life... Though not raising any fearful suspicions, something about them renders you feeling insignificant in their presence... This feeling persists despite the Couatl finding everything you tell them about yourselves with never-ending genuine interest, and each of your personal life anecdote. Stating almost ad-nauseam to you how after hearing of your qualities, hobbies, desires, prowess, and skills you've attained are each sequentially more impressive the previous. ""Change Shape. The couatl magically polymorphs into a humanoid or beast that has a challenge rating equal to or less than its own, or back into its true form. It reverts to its true form if it dies. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying is absorbed or borne by the new form (the couatl's choice). In a new form, the couatl retains its game statistics and ability to speak, but its AC, movement modes, Strength, Dexterity, and other actions are replaced by those of the new form, and it gains any statistics and capabilities (except class features, legendary actions, and lair actions) that the new form has but that it lacks. If the new form has a bite attack, the couatl can use its bite in that form.""

In my campaigns, the poison of Couatls is whatever kind they wish. Literally any kind of poison, including magical effects to merely purely natural acid burns to psionic shock. As for the gods who spawned them, I was a life long fan of all mythologies... including some Central Native American lore. My campaign universe is Loom of Magus. The AD&D universe was spawned by two of the Loom Dragons breaking from their eternal drift of apathy (I did not have an origin for those until those serpent "gods"). The parasites that developed lives on the surface of the Loom Dragons were long since hungering for life outside of being mere parasites (the Crystonians, the first humanoid race of Loom of Magus). Upon seeing what their rogues created, they created Loom of Magus, both finite and infinite, and parked it parallel to the AD&D universe. Physically speaking, Loom of Magus is spherical space 100,000 Light Years in diameter, having a solar system every 4-9 light-years from each other, and each having outer plane pockets each linked to and limited in size to the Loom of Magus god that rules the area. Also, it has an infinite number of parallel prime material planes and is temporally vague. Its origin is trillions (maybe billions) of years ago but it is far newer than the first loom dragons' creation (origin of the Couatls). The original humanoids (the Crystonians) are pretty much eons extinct via their own sh^t.

Medium doesn't even make sense, considering the activities and mechanisms of the critter (large, colourful wings). Now I suppose it's easy enough to just make them large for a campaign/one-shot but I'd prefer historical accuracy (relative) to my inclinations. I'm also very happy you mentioned the ability for it to pop in and out of the Ethereal at whim, something I was indeed familiar with. As it can also polymorph, at CR-4 it could certainly appear as a large intimidating beast/humanoid should the need arise.

Jazirian seems more comparable to a great old one than a god to be honest, but instead of causing madness from forbidden knowledge(lovecraftian beings) or deeply embedded fears(Dendar eg) the madness is from twisting riddles, stunning beauty and tests of willpower. It would explain how they don't need to be worshipped to be powerful after all. Edit: The pact of the great old one actually works with this theme, since a lot of the abilities the warlock gains are similar to coatl abilities.

Alright putting this out there: After fighting a group of Devils or random crystal loot you put an egg shaped (don't call it that too obvious) gem into the haul that somehow produces all the colors of the rainbow. Magical Focus for good aligned characters granting a +1 to spell attacks and saving throws as well as resistance to psychic damage. Obviously it is a baby coatl egg. After enough spells have been cast through it it hatches. From there do what you will but perhaps the left over crystal shell could be used as a focus once fashioned into a rod, staff, etc. and it give them access to spells of the school they cast the most. Since that is the school that the crystal absorbed to nurture the coatl.

Two things I love: Couatls and Lizardfolk. In a Pathfinder Planescape game I wanted to play a Paladin and saw that the Paladin mount list included Triceratops. I had a sudden image of a feather-crested Lizardfolk in mesoamerican-styled plate armor riding a Triceratops, and decided I needed to play a Lawful Good Lizardfolk Paladin who went against the stereotypes of both his race and his alignment: a noble, cultured champion of Good who employed reason and common sense first and violence only when all else failed. To create this unusual being I asked myself, what if a Couatl adopted an enclave of Lizardfolk and led them to the Outlands to create an enclave of technologically simple but culturally sophisticated proponents of peace and good will? Thus I created the Xi-Couatl, the Couatl-Kin Lizardfolk, and Naxtlacotl of the Za'Extli-Ma clan - Paladin of Xymor and Questing Knight of Quet'Zhual, the Lord of Feather and Fang, partner to the Triceratops Chotaka'e, 'Threefold Piercer of Falsehood'. Put together a whole origin myth for them, the Atzo'e-Ma - Spawn of the Seven. I really need to play one again.
