Black wins by playing Qe4 instead. White has no freeze spell and king can't escape e-file. On black's next turn green spell to e3 and queen captures the white king.

I love this variant so much. It allows for some crazy wacky tactics and its just awesome. Like how Eric Rosen quickly discovered that the Scandinavian Defense is just about the worst opening you could play as Black because it immediately transposes into a Botez Gambit xD

@@LostPleir d5 is too late. There’s only 6 moves that don’t hang mate after e4 (or e3) and those are: a6, c6, Nc6, g6, e6 and e5. Nc6 is bad, g6 loses a piece I think, and a6 is also pretty bad (although it is rather tricky if white tries to punish it and I’ve won a few games with the move, and beat a 2000 with it). Caro, french and e5 are all fine, just watch out for the light-squared bishop.

Feel like reactive spell counterplay is the way to win in this mode. In the position at 31:30, white can play queen a4 while freezing the black queen. This threatens to take the king (with a jump spell) and the black queen on h4. Black has to address the threat to his king by either moving or blocking, either of which would end up loosing a queen.

They would play pawn to b5 and you can take their queen but then they would take back with rook, you take their rook and only end up with 1 extra rook

After black plays queen to h4, white can play queen to a4, counter-threatening to take the king with a jump spell, and the black queen. Black has to either move the king or block, and lose their queen.

31:55 instead of moving the knight, you can freeze the queen, then pawn to b4 since you can jump potion the rook to take the queen and you win a bishop

In the heavily analyzed position at the end of the video you could easily avoid the attack by freezing the queen then playing b4 to neutralize the Bishop tricks while simultaneously guaranteeing that you win the queen with the Rook after you jump your pawn on h2 on the next move

Agreed. Having some means of "earning" additional spell uses via earlier restraint from using them would present interesting strategies.

At the last position you were looking, if the queen moves there you could do the same they did to you before, spell the pawn in front of the rook and take the queen

At 32:36 you can put a jump spell on your king and take the queen with the bishop on f1, still a very bad position if they don't move the queen to c4

I saw this video yesterday and didn’t watch the video because I was so excited to play. Now that I’m watching the video, I see this is very valuable information. Levy is literally going through just about the exact same mental process I did to build opening preparation, yet much faster and with less losses.

after queen h4 freeze, you can freeze the queen and play b4. Opponent can use the bounce spell and jump in and hit your rook, but having the queen stuck in the backline with no jump spells for 3 turns definitely gives you some room for counterpley. Something like qxh1, and then qh5 counterattacking the king and hitting the pawn looks pretty crushing to me

Great insights and analysis as always, Levy! Your videos really made chess a lot more famous, accessible and so much more enjoyable. Keep up the fantastic work!

There were updates in the 1800s including instant promotion and some rules on stalemate. Before that, there was the castling rule, before that it was changes to how the pieces moved. Warhammer chess allows combat along with traditional moves.

There's also Ouroboros King, another roguelike which is mechanically a lot closer to regular chess.

I hope we can get a chess variant where you can setup the position of your pieces except for the King, Queen and Pawns before starting the game.

7:00 this is actually one of the main ways to cheese and even a decent opening, although I'd play 1.e4. Black actually only has a few responses, since Qh5 is a huge threat: - Bb4 is the main move, resulting in a symmetrical position after c3 c6 cxb4 cxb5 - g6, preventing Qh5, playable, but maybe a bit passive - Bd6, with the idea to play Kf8 after Qh5, looks awkward, but might be playable - Be7 with the same idea as Bd6, but I think Bd6 is better - Ke7 looks very questionable, but might not lose with precise play, the advatage is that black saves a freeze All other moves lose after Qh5.

This was very entertaining to watch I definitely hope Levy keeps playing this.

I imagine providing a rage spell would be game breaking: allowing one of your pieces to make two moves in a single turn...so perhaps that's why they didn't dare to add it. It's still quite amazing though how freezing and jumping doesn't break the game.

I think that using a mana system and special spells for each cards would be complex, but very fun

The jump spell seems to be emulating a certain troop from Chinese chess, or Xiangqi. It is the cannon troop, which is able to hit any piece on the same row/column (same movement as a rook), but can only kill a piece directly behind another by shooting over its head. I would love to see you try it out!

but there's also the risk of creating unbeatable openings. for example if white starts e4 and opponent plays e6 then Qh5 with a freeze surrounding g7 is an extremely powerful move. i haven't gone through all of the lines, but so far it seems like its just straight up lost for black

it can, im not 100% convinced. i've ran a few games doing that opening gambit and i think there are some viable, if not outright wining responses. its possible its less that that offense is actually stronger, its just much more complicated and easier to make a mistake in defense. so like..with perfect play it may not actually make a difference, but obviously most players aren't perfect. and its REALLY easy to mess up vs certain openings @@pierrecurie

The answer to Qh4 (and freezing g2) is probably just to freeze h4 and play b4. You don't need to retreat the knight to f3 to threaten the queen because the rook is already threatening the queen with a jump spell. This guarantees the queen is lost and is likely the reason your opponent didn't play it.

In 32:37, your Bishop on f1 could get the black queen with green spell on your white king. He had no blue freeze spell (if this was not mentioned before)

18:01 there's a cool continuation here where black checks ND3, and if white takes with bishop, it's jump mate with queen. White just got baited out of the freeze, so this is almost mate... but you can king jump to G1 as the only escape. What a game.
