What The Chinese Think Of Taiwan | Street Interview

Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit to Taiwan has increased the ongoing tensions between China and the US over Taiwan, over which China vowed to “take resolute and forceful measures.” But what do ordinary Chinese think about their relationship to Taiwan?
A little while ago, we conducted a street interview in Taiwan to get ordinary Taiwanese citizens’ opinions on China. Be sure to check out the video for some context ► • What Taiwanese Think o...
We acknowledge that this is a very sensitive topic in China but we want to make it very clear, again, that we do not seek or possess any government’s permits for our street interviews in China. It’s actually pretty tough for us to put a video like this together but we can assure you that none of our interviewees get paid to share their thoughts and our team is standing out on the street to approach people for many hours a day. It’s all our Asian Boss community members, fans and freelancers who make these videos possible.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Chinese population.

Unfortunately you are wrong. Issue here is asian boss interview mostly younger people. Or only young people talk to them. Politician reflect on view of the population, most older generation has alot more skin in the game then young people, since they were there, or remember the history of Taiwan. I would love to see they do an interview with the parents and the interview people. Things will get heated pretty fast.

@@Lee-ic8ln I don’t think you understand. The reporter tried her best to talk about censorship without talking about censorship. Anyone grew up in China will be genuinely scared to talk about anything related to this topic facing a foreign media--because even if you expressively embrace the propaganda you may still get in trouble. A lot people would straight up refuse to be interviewed. Also if anyone take any payment from the interviewer or the foreign media is going to face interrogations as if they are spies. There are a lot of grey areas in this interview and everyone is risking their social life.(they can be shamed publicly, which means you will no longer get hired or any social benefits)

Aye. My Taiwanese classmate says most Taiwanese don't welcome Pelosi at all. Is this true? So why does she still insist to visit? For the politically astute, especially with what’s happening in Ukraine, the Taiwanese people should have realized by now that American politicians are there to score political points for themselves, and not at all for the interest of the Taiwanese people. Just as Pelosi is the first to lead the charge to promote Joshua Wong and the Hong Kong protest, she’s also going over to ensure a high profile for the DPP and to kick off the Democrat’s China bashing for this year’s midterm election - a very thin majority that the Democrats are likely to lose badly, especially with Biden’s plummeting poll numbers going down to sub-30%. Pelosi’s desperate to try anything. Taiwanese are smart enough to know that if Biden would not dare challenge Russia in Ukraine that he is lying through his teeth that he would be defending Taiwan should the DPP dare to declare independence and force China to enforce their red-line forewarning of military force. Other than increasing U.S.-China tension, what business is it of Pelosi to be making this trip to Taiwan in the first place? -Fred Chuatiuco Pelosi is a trouble maker of the worst kind. She has lost the fight for HK pro demo group. Now she is looking at Taiwan for her next fight. Diversion is one of the tools of a politician. -Chilly Padi I believe as time wears on, Pelosi will look more and more like a callous fool. It will become plain for all to see how her vanity, recklessness, and vindictiveness have caused pain and suffering in the people across the Taiwan Strait that she so callously left behind. Most likely, she doesn’t give a damn anyway. In the meantime, she also severely compromised US leverage on China regarding Taiwan. We will see the effect of this soon. She will be viewed as The Fool in 5 years. -Chiu Yu Great way to deflect attention from her husband’s DWI court appearance on Wednesday. -Austin Powers Great way to divert attention off of Hunter’s laptop as well. -Susanna Guillory Why is she going to Asia? The homeless scene in her hometown San Francisco is getting worse every year. She says she has “global responsibility” but no responsibility to her own countrymen? -Renee Chen It’s amazing how she’s so worried about other countries, yet if you look at her district in San Francisco, California, and surrounding cities, they’re many areas filled with tents 🏕 and homelessness. -Acapellapoet Tv

I don't think the questions we use in these conversations really get to the bottom of all of this, as the two sides fundamentally don't share the same definition of "independence" and "country". For an average mainlander, it isn't hard to recognize that Taiwan is indeed operating independently, but it is not rid of the tie with mainland due to historical complexities, and therefore it is not a country. For an average Taiwanese, operating independently means they are a country, and they simply need to be recognized as such by more countries in the world. This disparity of definition often lead to the two sides simply talking past each other most of the time.

As a Chinese, I would say if Taiwanese people do not want to be part of China, then leave. Just move to another country. The lands of Taiwan belongs to China (be it PRC or ROC), if you want to create a "new country" called Taiwan, alright do it then, but DON'T you ever steal the lands of China. It is officially part of China. If you want to stay being ROC, alright then, you can keep the island, because you are still claiming to be the "real China". But if you no longer claim yourself being China, then we have no reason to give the island to you for free. It is all okay for me, as long as you buy the land. The island of Taiwan is owned by China. This ownership is recognized by everyone!

Perhaps not in terms of action/their own behaviors but they were enthusiastic for outside perspectives. I hope Nationalism/Trade Warfare doesn't get in the way of natural, human comraderie. Dont get the wrong idea about Chinese people based on their sometimes tourist behavior. Visit them on their home turf and they're amongst the most hospitable/genuine people you'll find.

For instance, when discussing Taiwan as part of China, the host asked, “Was this what you were taught in school?” I didn't hear similar questions during the interview in Taiwan. I'd also like to ask. "Were you taught that Taiwan is independent in school?" It's widely known that the pro-independence education has been ongoing in Taiwan for over two decades, and this so-called neutral stance appears rather questionable. '卷' is a short form of '內卷' (literal translation: involution), an internet buzzword describing the increasing competitiveness in many facets of Chinese society. The term was initially used to describe the ridiculous levels of internal competition among top high schools and universities but gradually expanded to the work environment as well.

A lot of the conflict on the Taiwan issue among civilians stems from the fact that a lot of Mainland civilians cannot separate the mindset that Country, Party, and Ethnicity are three different things. Also the CCP refuse to refer to Taiwan as Republic of China so civilians would think Taiwan as a new break off renegade state instead of a government that existed prior to the CCP, since if the CCP recognize Taiwan as something that existed prior to CCP it will put their right to governance in mainland at risk.

From an Indian The people across the sea are both Han Chinese...it was just a battle of ideological stupidities in the 1940s, artificially imposed, might I say, by the western n eastern block...which made them fight! As the years hv progressed, the differences hv decreased...because, at the end of the day- they are similiar kind of Orientals, han Chinese who think alike! Chinese r not so much repressed as western media shows them to be, n neither r Taiwanese so anti-Chinese. The people continuously visit across d mainland for jobs n meeting relatives! The taiwanese should handle this with care because the US lackey prime minister of Taiwan would lead them to ruins, all in d name of democracy n western values...for once, CCP should not behave like immature novices in matters concerning foreign policy! U hv d economic wherewithal...use it to coerce the Taiwanese government- use it. No missiles, army,AF would be required! US bullying needs to be countered tactfully....n Taiwan needs to understand that the Yankees won't cm 2 d rescue once China starts screwing Taiwan. Taiwan may think today that US really cares for it, in the name of shared ideals, free speech n democracy....but the actual reality couldn't farther from the real facts on ground, which is that US wants to make an Ukraine out of Taiwan by instigating China...n when conflict breaks out, sit back n hv popcorn! N yea, Ship costly weapons to Taiwan benefitting its militant-industrial complex. Raytheon, Boeing, Lockheed would be so happy to see the Taiwanese rat caught in the trap.. My dear Taiwanese friends, please see through this! I m not requesting to give up ur sovereignty, but act smartly in ur own interests for long term peace. Find more common grounds, people!

I’m native Chinese. “China” to us is not a term we’d use to describe a nation or administration, but a civilization. We live on a land that has seen rises and falls of SO many dynasties and CCP is just one of them. It was China when ROC ruled, and it was China when Qing dynasty ruled. When I grew up, my text book said “Taiwan has always been an inseparable part of China” and this China, to my understanding, didn’t mean CCP. I have family members living and dying in Taiwan, because of the civil war, and I really don’t want a war to happen to us again. I also don’t think CCP wants a war. Wars are endless drainage of national wealth and the only country existing that had benefited from wars is the US. I’m pro status quo.

Many people in Mainland China have relatives in Taiwan in my area. I heard a lot of stories of that, such as brothers went to Taiwan with parents left in Mainland, or husband went to Taiwan, left wife and child in Mainland . My grandfather's older brother was a soldier fought for Kuomintang, he went to Taiwan in 1949, because CCP defeated Kuomintang during the National War. At that time, he thought and was told that they will come back to Mainland China soon. So it is the history that Taiwan is part of China. But I really hope this can be settled in a peaceful way.

Yep.

18:00 I don’t think what she said is true about you can’t discuss about the issue. You can find a lot of discussion about Taiwan in Chinese social platform. Especially during the Pelosi’s visit. But the problem is, the point she hold is so different against most people. I won’t be surprised if she get targeted. Not saying it is from the government but from ordinary Chinese people. Just like what “political correctness” means in the West. EDIT: as point out by the comments below and other comments by Chinese speakers, the accent of this interviewee and usage of several words were quite different from mainland Chinese. So highly possible, she is not from or at least not educated in mainland China. That may well explain why her point of view is so different from the others in this interview.

As a Taiwanese who has spent a limited amount of time interacting with local Chinese citizens in Shanghai and has been educated and lived in the US and Japan, here are some of my observations and perspectives based on my personal experiences. Chinese people, be it Taiwan or Mainland China generally do not initiate confrontations, particularly if it would involve conflicts of ideologies. I found it easy to befriend local Chinese to a certain degree during my time in China but there were definitely things that I saw in China that I wouldn't expect to experience in Taiwan. To put it simply, despite the fact that we generally speak Mandarin Chinese and have no trouble understanding each other's language, for the Taiwanese to communicate with the Chinese or vice versa, it would simply feel like a form of cross-cultural communication. It simply feels foreign in many ways. Just like how the British communicate with Americans or Americans with Canadians, etc, etc. I've seen some comments from overseas Chinese bringing up the difficulty of forming friendships with oversea Taiwanese due to judgments made about one's nationalities. I don't think that's entirely true but it certainly would easily lead to conflicts if all the parties in a relationship would have to communicate from completely different ideologies. Imagine a republican trying to befriend a democrat....would lead to nothing but nightmares for both parties, so why run the risk? To leave my comment on a positive note, respect is one key thing we shall all learn to bring to any type of communication. Respect the difference, respect the opinions. Thanks to Asian Boss for taking that first step to listening and understanding.

@@mky99 Its true that China is not a democratic country but no government can rule a people who hates it, those where the words of Machiavelli and he wasn't exactly known for his positive outlook. If a good amount of Chinese people are against a violent takeover of Taiwan, that makes said takeover much harder to achieve and maintain, specially if the whole ethos of your country resolves around preserving the status quo. Main point is, China wont make major moves on Taiwan if that will cause more harm than good for the CCP.

Thank you Asian boss. I think you did a great job. For those people who always criticise Asian boss for hiring actor or actress to play the interview especially on the topics about China, my suggestion is that if you never been to China it’s your time to try to walk out of your shell, go visit China and see in your real eyes, don’t always rely on what you hear on TV and news. Good luck!

That lady with her face mosaiced is definitely not a chinese mainlander, her accent and the way she used some phrases are more like people from taiwan. The way she mentioned "information" as "咨询“ revealed where she comes from, as China mainlanders would use word "信息“ for “information”. She also mentioned "Censorship" and use the word "监察“ whereas mainlanders would normally use word "审查" for“Censorship”. Trust me, I am a native Chinese speaker, I have quite a few friends and classmates who come from taiwan. I can tell the subtle differences in the accents and the ways two sides speak. That lady is more like someone from taiwan or at least heavily influenced by it so she is pro-Taiwan, more of a rare exception than norm. Due to this reason, unfortunately, this has reduced the credibility of the interview as it is supposed to be an interview for ordinary local China mainlanders.

Second this. I immediately picked up the same clue when she used the term "资讯”. Overall, street interviews in Shanghai is not very representative of the overall Chinese.

If she had experience living overseas, the way she spoke is quite natural to me. As I previously worked for a foreign owned company in Shanghai, the phrase & style she spoke reminded me of several of my ex-coworkers who had overseas experience though they all held Chinese passports. I reckon she had a standard Southern Chinese accent, but most likely NOT a Taiwan/Malaysia/Singapore accent. I noticed she correctly used "社交软件“ for social media software rather than "社群“ that is commonly used in Taiwan. As the way she mentioned "information", as a local born and raised Shanghainese, I used the term "资讯” as well cos the Shanghai local News (SMG group) broadcasted "资讯”. Overall, I agree with the view that Shanghai is not a good representation of the overall China. But I incline to believe she is a genuine ordinary local Mainland citizen (most likely to have been exposed to overseas experience) living in Shanghai representing a minority view. Btw, I also noticed the interview was took place in 西岸 WEST BUND, which is quite a decent area in Xuhui, Shanghai. Although I believe interviewees are all ordinary Chinese, there might be a selection bias which tend to interview towards cohort with higher average income or access to better education and/or uncensored information.

@@gjc7969 Yes what you said is definitely a possibility. That’s why I said she might be someone who is "heavily influenced by Taiwan and therefore is pro-Taiwan", but this is a rare exception in Mainland China than a norm. My observation is that those people tend to work for western or Taiwan companies in China and they usually have very limited (if not at all) real-life and work experience abroad. Their perception of western society or Taiwan in general tends to be based on second-hand sometimes even false information from outside (such as western news outlets), or based on their limited experience abroad(less than several years). one interesting phenomenon I have noticed is that the more a china mainlander lives in western countries (say over 5-10 years), the more he/she tends to be disappointed by what has been happening in the past decade or so where the US and the entire western world is not as ideal and confident and prosperous as it is used to be. And the majority of those oversea Chinese would genuinely want to see a more powerful, prosperous and united China, I would call that patriotic (not necessarily Pro-CPC though). I think one of the key reasons for that shift is mainly because what they have seen, felt everyday and lived abroad long enough, and have more access to all kinds of information, and came up with their own judgement based on reasonable logic and common-sense, not based on propaganda from either side.

It's not that Asian Boss has used actors, it's that Asian Boss arranged for a person in Taiwan who is pro-China to be interviewed for one of their videos, in order to show "both sides" of public opinion, which is a misrepresentation.
