What Size Compressor For Plasma Cutter

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

What Size Compressor For Plasma Cutter. Plasma cutting needs a good continuous good dry air supply but if you are on a home power supply you are limited to the amount of juice available The best plasma cutter compressor needs to have a good size air holding tank of at least 20-gallon plasma cutting takes a fair amount of air the bigger your holding tank the better. Even the small cut 50 plasma cutter will take a good air supply to run.

    Most cutters of 40 amps require a minimum of 5CFM, or the metric equivalent. It’s not the air pressure that needs to be changed, which most manufacturers state to be from 90-125 PSI (6.2 - 8.6 bar). It’s the CFM that changes depending on the thickness of cut. 1/8” or 3mm needs 3CFM, at least, and 1/2” 12.5 mm needs at LEAST double that. So my Thermal Dynamics 40 amp model (the new one, not the old one) requires, according to ESAB, from 3.3 -7.5 CFM, depending on the thickness being cut. This is up to 1/2”. 12.5mm for a high quality cut, and is minimally useful to a 1” sever, which is a poor quality cut. The problem with compressor ratings is that they’re not really good for long term use. For more than about 30 seconds, or so, depending on the model, other than for commercial models, derate the CFM by 35%, or so. So a model rated at 10 CFM is really good for maybe 7 CFM. The tank size does matter, but even a 20 gal tank will run down quickly below startup pressure. A 50 amp cutter will require about 20-25% more CFM. About 12 as a decent size, if it’s real. In the States we have 120 volt 20 amp, and can easily get 240 volt 20 amp, which is standard for air conditioners. The welder standard around the world is 50 amp 240. You can manage, if your welder does it, with 120 20, and even, for small welders, or really lowered output 120 volt 15 amps. But I don’t recommend it. So in my shop, for my welders, I have 50 amp 240 volt. My cutter has the same plug, so I move one out, and the other in. This isn’t a professional shop. My entire basement and two car garage are my shops.

    Mel is CFM measured at specific psi ? Some machines quote CFM @ 90psi other just state free air and if they are capable of 145psi then free air will be better at lower psi surely?

  • @melgross

    @melgross

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@panfon5650 cfm must be reported at some pressure number. Free air, such as that from a fan isn’t useful, obviously. As soon as air moves through a tube, pipe or whatever, it’s restricted. So the pressure within that carrier has a higher pressure than the surrounding air. In fact cfm is reported as scfm, which means “standard”, which is at a specific temperature and such. In a plasma cutter, a main function is for the air to push the melted material away from the cut, which is why it sparks so much. If the air isn’t at whatever pressure the manufacturer states is needed, then the molten material just sticks to the cut. It’s the force of the amount of air and the speed of the air caused by the pressure that does that work. High volume, low pressure air would just billow out and do little.

    Hey don’t know if your still stuck on this issue but you could try running the air compressor off a different breaker most breaker panels can handle 100 amps or something like that so as long as you have room for another breaker you should be able to do that pretty easily.

    Since the rest of the world has gone to Metrics a long time ago, I would appreciate if you stay with Metrics so people don't have to google the equivalent. Americans are the only country who chose to stay using the old Imperial and they're the ones who should find the conversion instead.

    Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) is one of those imperial units that is still referred to globaly. People installing and repairing compressors all over tge world still refer to CFM instead of LPM. It's the most important figure to look at when purchasing a compressor and it frustrating that half the time the CFM or LPM is no where to be found on a compressor.
