My impression has always been one can condition much better to a heavy bag with bag mitts, learn how to be more precise with your angles hooks, uppercuts , crosses and jabs and in the process learn not to compromise your wrist by throwing messy shots! So when sparring or fighting one is sharper and cleaner..

Bag mitts as we called them in Philly, harden up the hands but even more important, they allow the fighter to feel the punch land so they can make corrections/adjustments in technique.

I am a new school boxer from Europe, and I have always agreed on the fact that the 30's to the 70's was a time when every town had its own golden boxer. With that said, a boxing was way more popular than today, so we got the chance to see more skillful althletes than todays boxers. So that brings me to the speed bag gloves, I have always said that they make you a better boxer. I use old fighting styles and training in my amateur career, and I tend to go for a Joe Louis type of fighting style. I recommend these gloves and a smaller heavy bag that can swing easily. Great video, thanks for the info btw

I am a novice & I’ve only punched the heavy bag & speed bag & never another human being but my guess to the answer is...training with those gloves will give you better natural accuracy that will become second nature & that accuracy will transfer once you put on the larger padded gloves for an actual fight. Please respond as I would love to know the answer. Thanks, John

Victor Temnograd * * * * * * FIVE Stars for watching and for the Awesome Compliment ! These Hall of Fame Champs, main focus/study, was punching with precision... It was about precision more than anything. Pin Pointing a knuckle on a pimple, rather than a 16 ounce sparring glove on 100 pound punching bag. The study of precision is so important in Punching. They wanted to know what part of their hand was hitting the target ! I was there in the days when everything about Gloves, and much about Boxing changed ! I have my opinion and may some day make a video? The gloves were much better in those Old School Days. On the hands, not the opponents eyes ! They had 18 once, 20 once & 22 once Boxing Gloves at the Fifth Street Gym on Miami Beach in the 1970's & 80's. I spent much time in the gym at 5th street when Ali was training there. The only time you would see these Big Gloves was when the PAID SPARRING PARTNERS had to spar Ali, and they were given big gloves, while Muhammad utilizes 16 ounce gloves* Gloves are to protect the face of the guy you hit in the FACE ! Wraps protect the hands ! Precision Punching protects the hands* Lets go down the road of BIGGER is BETTER ! = 30 once gloves should be better than 20, and 40 once, should be even better? Then you have the guy who brakes all kinds of incredible STUFF with BARE HANDS, Knuckles ! Bet they would never try to brake anything with a 20 once boxing gloves on their hand * In the Old School NOBODY hit the punching bags with sparring gloves. The trainers would stop you rite away. Sincerely Appreciate You * * * * * Thanks for Watching and for nice comment ! Paul D'Antuono The Punch Professor

I think there was a similar question raised about thin bag gloves on anther of your videos. The reason or at least a primary reason for thin gloves is for the conditioning of the hands and wrists. Precision also factors in, but if your hands are conditioned to absorb impact, confidence will be elevated in heavier padded gloves, the knowledge and understanding injury is less likely through conditioning is a big plus.

  • @PatrickAllen

I alternate b/w 16oz, 12oz, and 4oz mma gloves (just when and how I feel like). I notice how the smaller gloves increase my wrist strength, and with increased wrist strength and squareness (proper bone alignment) come harder punches when your wrists can take the shock. In 'Drunken Master' w/ Jackie chan, he does pushups on his wrists. He would lay his palm face down, push up and jump a little bit and flip and land on the back side of his hand. then do the same and flip his hand again. It helps. Using the bigger gloves sort of handicap the punchers wrist because they are so protected.

NoWayAsWay * * * * * Thank You for Watching and for posting the very interesting comment ! If I had to say which RENOWNED Boxing Trainer/Cornerman shares simular Boxing Knowledge as MYSELF, I would say only Joe Goosen (Owns Tengoose)... If I was fighting today, Joe Goosen would be in my Corner ! For me it is amazing how many beliefs we share... There are Cubans in Miami that also share much of my knowledge, but the Cubans I know are not well known outside of South Florida... I was trained by Old School Trainers from Cuba ! As for why the Old School Champs utilized smaller bag gloves = Your answers are good yet the main reason was PRECISION/ACCURACY... In brief they wanted to land a Knuckle on a Pimple rather than a 16 ounce sparring glove on a hundred pound heavy bag ... They wanted to know what part of their hand was hitting the target... Back in the day, all trainers would stop you rite now, if you started to hit the bag with a sparring glove, or a fight glove... Thank You for Watching, and for posting the very interesting comment ! I think Kaiser 74 said it best. When I work out on the bag, I always just used wrist wrap and thin speed gloves on the heavy bag. The hit was more precise, powerful, loud, intimidating. It kept me throwing more power shots without the slop, cause the slop you would feel in your wrist immediately. Once I learned to throw proper punches my and my wrists toughened up, the bag became really fun. Now I use the speed glove or mma gloves only. I’ve tried the thick gloves and I feel awkward and clumsy 😎👍🏼

Hall of Fame Boxers were an every day thing at 5th street, which was owned by Chris Dundee ~ Angelo's older brother ... GGG won both fights without a doubt. Beat Canelo both ways, coming to him, and going away ... In the 2nd. fight Alvarez was pressing, but not very effective. As opposed to when GGG pressed in the first fight, and had Alvarez on the ropes many times, Canelo in pressing never got GGG to go to the ropes.... Thank You Paul D'

What gym was that? I get a lot of my training done at Tigers MMA in Winter Haven. If i had to guess, the reason a a bag glove is better is for punching technique (body mechanics and muscle conditioning). With less padding I have to hit the heavy bag with better technique and accuracy to achieve the same speed and power as painlessly as i do with big padded 16oz sparring gloves. Which may translate to more powerful, more technical transfer of energy on average during the fight with the bigger gloves. I hope you do a follow up with your idea of the answer.

Afonso Mendes * * * * * Thanks for watching, I hope you liked the video ! Below are links for two of my favorite Bag Gloves. These gloves are similar to the Gloves Muhammad Ali utilized when he trained! Both items are online. Rival Boxing and Title Boxing sell these items. Sizes are not always available. I like them big so to leave room for a good wrap! I hope this helps, the smaller gloves are best* Sincerely Paul D' The Punch Professor rivalboxing.us/collections/bag-gloves/products/rival-rb5-bag-mitts-p4p-edition www.titleboxing.com/punching-bags/title-boxing-pro-leather-speed-bag-gloves-2-0?Criteo&

Id gues its because you have weight to act as a boxing glove, but not enough padding to cushiion the wrist too much, therefor strength and conditioning it. so you can condition to Wallup somone and not have your wrist buckle. aswell as get use to a bit of glove weight on there

Master Caster * * * * * 5 Stars for Watching and for the good answer to the Question * The prime reason the Old School Champs wore a Thin Bag Glove was PRECISION ! They were so concerned with accuracy/precision that they looked to place a Knuckle on a Pimple, rather than a 16 ounce sparring glove on a Hundred Pound Heavy Bag * These Hall of Fame Champions wanted to feel what part of their hand was hitting the Target****** I appreciate that you took the time to post the Educated & Good Answer ! Aaron Shaw * * * * * 5 Stars for Watching and for posting the good question * Almost always the Old School Champions wore wraps. The wraps are for the protection of the YOUR hand. The Gloves are for the protection of the OPPONENTS face... That is why the wraps and gloves were made. The Old Hall of Fame Champions wanted to land a KNUCKEL on a PIMPLE rather than as today, they land a 16 ounce sparring glove on a hundred pound heavy bag. Old School was all about precision/accuracy ! True Paul D'Antuono The Punch Professor

I'm sure all those guys hit HARD! In my old age, I'm going the opposite direction with my screwed up wrists and more delicate hands. I wear at least 10 oz gloves and don't hit hard. Just do it purely for the exercise, speed and reaction time training. Dang, what you said about Liston, that guy was a destroyer. Sure hope the mob didn't get to him but they aren't known for having pity.
