What's Wrong With My Kenwood TS-430S?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was given a broken TS-430S a few years back, and I am trying to get it working again. It puts out rated power of 100W on 160m and 80m, less than 50W on 40m, and then less than 10W on all other bands from 20m through 10m. I have already removed the IF unit and RF unit, and I found some issues, which I corrected, but the main issues persist. Next, I will be removing the LPF board, and testing the relays. I suspect one or more of the LPF relays are stuck or not working. I would welcome any suggestions or feedback, since I would really like to get this TS-430S back on the air.

cold solder joints were most of the problems of many 430s radios...

Kindly advise: I extracted the output filter board of a TS-430S to work on it. Issues: 1. Intermittent low rx (probably "dirty" relays). It appears they are all sealed (except the tx/tx relay). I tried using a "wetting voltage" as described in a Kenwood service bulletin, but there is still intermittent loss of rx, especially on 10m. 2. One of the inductors (L41) is shorted. 3. How do you test a diac (D18)? (It reads short circuit in both directions.) Apparently it is for overload/surge protection. 4. The S meter reads extremely low. I failed to recalibrate S9 (even with the trim at maximum, it doesn't reach 9).

Hi Peter. I was given a TS430. Deceased estate, It was left in a cold damp basment before I got it. It starts OK, lots of noise from the speaker Desplay reads OK, PROBLEM, the Mode selector will NOT work and is stuck in FM mode. Touching the other mode buttons gets a slight change in noise light shows up in that position, BUT jumps back to the FM mode, when button is released. I tried the relay cleaning trick and did a reset, to NO avail . Looks to be putting out full power and meter needle moves to full scale into a dummy load. Any ideas what to look at next please.

May be late to the show, these rigs suffer corrosion on the relay contacts that switch the bands internally. In the ts430 service manual there is a method to apply slight voltage current to the contacts to "burn off" the grime. IF you need i can look through my mabual and find the pages included regarding this method. It entails a few resistors a pl259 and a power supply thats isolated. Lemme know!

Your problem may be the final transistors. They are notorious for having developed cold solder joints on the final output transistors and the fix was to solder a solid wire over the two solder pads on the output x-istors. I've seen the contacts cleaned and helped on the audio issues.

On my TS430 the meter doesn't move. It TX's finee though. Looked for cold solder joints made sure all wires were pressed down so, I'm looking for any other ideas why this is happening. 73 KC9UNV

Have you had any success getting the power back up on the upper bands?

I have a problem with a TS440Sat. In CW on transmit it sends a wabully signal if I put out more than 40 to 50 watts. Seems to work fine under 50 watts. Almost sounds like rf is getting into something. Works fine on SSB at full output. Any ideas??

sorry hit enter... low power is common on these.. had one just like it.. did full alignment and power came right up.. not the relays or diode's otherwise you would not get output . do the mods for receive !!! makes an excellent rig.

I just went through the LPF, and manually cleaned the relays. Once I get it back into the radio, I will run through the alignment.

So I started the TX section alignment, and now I am getting more power out on 20m. I still need to finish the alignment, but I am waiting on a paper service manual to arrive in the mail, so I can stop using the low quality pdf that I found online.

It is good information. I own two of this portable radios. One is in Mint condition. The second one seems to have two bands that do not work. Any information I can find is helpful. I find the radio s to be very compact yet pack a lot of features . I would suspect dirty or faulty relays, or cracked solder pads.

Do that tip of taking a 20 watt resistor and using a PL-259 connector, solder one end of the resistor to the center of the PL-259 where the antenna wire would go. The other end of the resistor would connect to your power supply positive 12 volts using a jumper lead with alligator clips, and use a jumper lead from the power supply ground to the radio ground wing nut. Connect the PL-259 to the antenna connector on rear of the radio. Do not connect the 12 volt lead to the resistor lead of the PL-259 just yet. Turn on the power supply, Turn on the radio, Turn on the 1Mhz step button and get the positive jumper lead wire alligator clip in your hand and get ready to attach it to the resistor lead. Attach the 12 volt alligator clip to the end of the PL-259 resistor then immediately hold down the Band up button and cycle thru all the bands for at least 1 minute, then immediately change to the down step button and cycle thru the bands again for one minute and stop, quickly taking the 12 volt lead off the PL-259 resistor. Take the PL-259 connector with resistor off the radio, careful, it will be hot. You are done, and have just cleaned all the oxidation off the relays contacts and the receive should be very loud on each band. Turn the 1Mhz button off. Now go thru each band and see how it receives now with the antenna now connected to the radio. Hope this clears up your poor receive.
